The Firebirds were paced offensively by Chris Stanislovaitis with 17 kills and 8 blocks. Dylan Kembre added with 16 more kills, while Brennan Wilder led the defense with 6 digs. Games three and four were very evenly matched, with each team playing solid defense and smart offense. The teams traded off game points starting at 24 in game four, and each had multiple chances before West ended it off a great hit by Dave Lendl. The Firebirds will face Kettering Fairmont today for a state quarterfinal berth. The Fairmont Firebirds advanced with a straight set 25-18, 29-27, 27-25 win over scrappy Northmont. Taking full advantage of some Fairmont service errors, the Thunderbolts served for game point in games two and three, but Fairmont’s serve receive was solid and kept them alive both times. The Firebirds were led by Mike Tabisz with17 kills, junior libero Mark Cridge with 17 digs and setter Dan Wagner who put up 36 assists. Tabisz earlier established a new single match record of 29 kills and needs only 11 more for the season record. Cridge is now Fairmont’s record holder for digs in a match record, 24, and season with 243. 5/20/09 - State tourney preview: St. Xavier and Roger Bacon favored in close calls 5/19/09 - St. Edward libero Rhett Cash named to Volleyball 2009 Boys Fab 50 team (Volleyball Magazine) 5/18/09 - Mt. Vernon eases past St. Charles in state tourney tune-up 5/16/09 - Moeller wrapped up the regular season with an 18-25, 25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 17-15 home win over Elder last night. 5/14/09 - LaSalle snuffed out Elder’s hopes for a three-way first place tie in the GCL South with a heart thumping 25-23, 25-23, 17-25, 20-25, 15-13 decision over the Panthers. This came just three days after Elder nipped the Lancers 25-23, 26-24 for third place in the Buckeye Classic. Coach Brian Meyer attributed the Lancer victory to “playing as a team”, noting his squad minimized errors and, except for game three, prevented long runs by Elder. Game five was back and forth intense until LaSalle surged to 14-11 on a three point run. On the ensuing volley, a big Lancer block went straight down but landed just out of bounds. Elder aced to close to 14-13, but their next serve went out. Meyer said “Both teams played an amazing hard fought game”, and added “I would expect the same for both matches on Friday”, when LaSalle meets St. Xavier and Elder tangles with Moeller. St. Xavier, meanwhile, avenged title match losses to Moeller in the Centerville Elite and Buckeye Classic with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-22 home win over the Crusaders to clinch at least a first place in the GCL South. 5/13/09 - Mt. Vernon started strong in game one, rallied in game three and stayed in control of game four to defeat Worthington Kilbourne 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 25-21 in the OCC Challenge feature match at Hilliard Darby High School last night. The annual Challenge pits teams from the three OCC divisions against each other based on their standings. Mt. Vernon and Kilbourne were champions of the Capital and Ohio divisions, respectively. This was Mt. Vernon’s second win over the Wolves in three days – the Yellow Jackets bested them last Saturday for the Silver title in the Buckeye Classic. Junior setter/opposite Carter Cassell paced Mt. Vernon with 28 assists, 18 kills and six blocks. Chris Ingersol, also a junior setter/opposite, dished out 23 more assists, while Chris Hinger, Ben Bennett and Chris Omahan combined for 27 more kills. Prior to the match the OCC awards were handed out, and Mt. Vernon junior setter/opposite Carter Cassell repeated as OCC Player of the Year. Mt. Vernon Coach Alan Cassell was named OCC Coach of the Year. Next up for the Yellow Jackets is a just added home match against Division II power St. Charles on Thursday at 6:00 (admission is free). In other Challenge matches, Capital co-champ and host Darby downed Cardinal co-champ Olentangy Liberty, while Pickerington North defeated Westerville North, the other Cardinal co-champ. 5/13/09 - Recap of past two weeks 5/10/09 - St. Xavier volleyball has unfinished business (Community Press, by Mark Chalifoux) 5/10/09 - Spartans find success on volleyball court (Community Press, by Mark Chalifoux) 5/5/09 - Archbishop Moeller topples St. Xavier in final to win "strongest ever" Centerville Elite 5/4/09 - Moeller volleyball impresses on, off the court (Community Press, by Mark Chalifoux) 4/24/09 - McNicholas volleyball reloads (Community Press, by Mark Chalifoux) Team play fuels Aves volleyball (Community Press, by Mark Chalifoux) 4/24/09 - St. Ignatius gained a straight set, albeit highly contested, 25-20, 28-26, 27-25 win over Archbishop Hoban on Tuesday as Greg Herceg smashed 19 more kills to break the school record 18 he just set last Saturday. Ben Woods fueled the offense with 39 assists, Mike Messina led the defense with 15 digs, and Matthias Doherty and Tim Hark also contributed to the scoring with five blocks and four aces, respectively. 4/22/09 - The Centerville Elite tournament will be held this Saturday at Centerville High School. Starting time is 10:00 A.M. This year's edition promises to be a great one - Ohio's top eight Division I teams will be there. 4/20/09 - Cleveland St. Ignatius captured its first ever Wolf Invitational tournament crown on Saturday with a 25-19, 25-23, 25-21 decision over Cincinnati LaSalle. Though it is hosted by Worthington Kilbourne, this is the first time since at least 2003 that a non-Cincinnati school has won. St. Xavier topped St. Edward for the crown last season, and LaSalle titled in 2007 with a win over Hilliard Darby. Senior 6’4" opposite hitter Greg Herceg paced St. Ignatius with a school record 18 kills, and 6’5” middle Pat Adler added 11 more. Setter Ben Woods put up 38 assists while Tim Hark led the defense with seven digs. Walsh Jesuit won the Silver Bracket to give northeast Ohio a sweep. Pickerington North and Kettering Fairmont both won quads last weekend. Division I turned into a jumble as a result of action late last week. It began when Elder knocked Centerville from the ranks of the unbeaten (see news from 4/17/09). The Elks, however, rebounded on Friday with a 25-23, 27-25, 30-32, 26-24 conquest of undefeated St. Xavier. The Bombers rallied from 22-24 to tie up game two on a Chad Jennings kill and a Centerville serve receive miscue. Following an exchange of errors, Centerville won out on a spike by junior middle Kevin Timperman and a back row kill from by 6’4” outside Eric Wohlford. St. Xavier held a 24-21 lead in game three, but Centerville whittled that away to force overtime, which went back and forth as the teams traded great points coupled with errors. Centerville lost two match point opportunities and the Bombers misfired on five game points. Chad Jennings blocked Timperman to put the Bombers up 30-29, and after Sean Hayes retied with a cross court blast, St. Xavier finally prevailed when their kill was followed by a Centerville serve receive error. The Bombers jumped to a 5-2 set four lead, which proved to be the biggest margin for either team. Centerville rallied to tie 14-14 and briefly took a one-point lead for a few back and forth plays. But St. X blocked for a 21-19 lead, and although Timperman tempered with a kill, that was negated by a service error. But Elk’s middle John Griggs scored a kill and a Bomber attack error left things deadlocked at 22. Centerville then obliged with two errors of their own to put St. Xavier on the verge of forcing a fifth game, but Wohlford and outside hitter Sean Hayes knotted things back up with kills. Griggs spiked the Elks to their third match point try, and when St. Xavier was called for a third contact double hit after a block by Hayes, the match was over. Wohlford led the Elks offense with 19 kills, while Bryan Gorsuch paced the defense with 24 digs. Griggs and Timperman combined for 12 blocks and setter Andrew Ervin had 34 assists. Division II also became more muddled with youthful Archbishop Hoban’s 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 15-13 win last Thursday at St. Charles. The Cardinals had been on a roll, their only loss to date to St. Xavier in a tiebreaker championship finale in their own St. Charles Classic. Hoban finished fourth in that event, and the Knights were visibly upset in their team huddle at the conclusion of that tournament. Thursday’s match up was an intensely fought battle pitting Hoban’s middles against the Cardinals’ outsides. Hoban junior Adam Weaver and sophomore Mikey Sokol spiked 18 and 10 kills, respectively, with only six errors between them. The two teamed up with junior setter Willy Veverka for 34 blocks in play. Veverka also put up 34 assists in what a St. Charles fan described as a “setting clinic”. Many of the Knights' blocks did not score thanks to the acrobatics of Cardinal libero Zach Hartmann, of whom Hoban Coach Matt Mihelic said afterward “I hope someone kept his stats because he did a phenomenal job picking up our blocks.” Unfortunately, stats on Hartmann were not available, but he is thought to have had "a few dozen digs". Outside hitters Ned Gruber, Damon DiSabato and Matt VanVolkenburg paced the Cardinals' offense. Elsewhere, Cincinnati Sycamore moved into a virtual tie for second in the GMC with a 25-18, 25-15, 24-26, 25-14 win over Lakota East, which also gave Lakota West sole position of first place. Sycamore will be rooting for East to knock off West this Thursday and force a three-way tie. West nipped Sycamore 22-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 15-13 earlier in the season. 4/17/09 - Defending Division II state champion Archbishop Hoban outlasted St. Charles in a 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-16, 15-13 thriller last night. St. Charles’ only other loss to date came in the title match of the St. Charles Classic at the hands of undefeated and top ranked Division I power St. Xavier 25-15, 23-25, 25-17. Hoban finished fourth in that tournament. Elsewhere, Elder handed Centerville its first loss in a 25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-20 decision. The Panthers were led by outside Clancy Gay with 14 kills and 15 digs, who along with 6’5” middle Jake Neiheisel and Matt Harpenau combined for 15 blocks. Outside hitter C. J. Zureick added 11 kills. Top ranked and undefeated St. Xavier will host Centerville tonight. The Bombers have already dispatched Elder, Archbishop Moeller and LaSalle once each to claim sole possession of first place in the GLC South. In OCC action, Hilliard Darby downed arch rival Davidson 25-16, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19 on the road to take sole possession of first place in their OCC division. The Panthers nipped Worthington Kilbourne 25-15, 27-29, 25-18, 21-25, 17-15 at home last week. Mt. Vernon, which beat Darby in four on Tuesday, leads their division after downing Pickerington North 25-18, 16-25, 25-15, 25-22. Mount Vernon's junior setting/opposite tandem of Carter Cassell and Chris Ingersol combined for 18 kills, 44 assists and 10 blocks against Pickerington North. Ben Bennett and Trey Williams contributed 11 more blocks. Cassell paced the Yellow Jackets with 14 kills against Darby, followed by Chris Hinger with 11. Williams and Bennett together tallied 15 blocks. Despite the presence of but one senior, Lakota East is off to a 6-1 start. The Thunderhawks, whose only loss came to Bishop Watterson in the Silver Bracket final at the St. Charles Classic, are led by junior 2008 Honorable Mention All-West setter Austin Weinheimer. Against Fairfield last week, sophomore outside Wes Meyer pounded out 20 kills and had 13 blocks. East will face 7-1 rival Lakota West next Thursday in what could decide the GMC title. In a score of note, Elder pulled out all the stops in game three to defeat Roger Bacon 25-16, 25-17, 34-32 on Tuesday. Roger Bacon leads the GLC Central, having upended Archbishop McNicholas last week in four. St. Edward went 4-0 at the St. Ignatius Invitational on April 3-4, beating the host Wildcats and Worthington Kilbourne in the process. The Eagles were led by Ohio State bound libero Rhett Cash and freshman middle blocker Owen McAndrews. They also beat Archbishop Hoban three nights and are now 8-1, their only blemish an opening weekend loss to Mt. Vernon in a tri-match with Hilliard Davidson where everyone finished 1-1. St. Ignatius also defeated Kilbourne at their Invitational. The Wildcats were led by Greg Herceg and Pat Adler with 17 and 16 kills, respectively. Setter Ben Woods put up 37 assists, libero Mike Messina had 25 digs and Adler also contributed eight blocks. The Colts advanced to their first regional final in school history over a program team with 21 regional and five state appearances, including last year. Cloverleaf will face Brecksville-Broadview Hts, which beat Stow and is seeking its fourth trip to state, but first since 1987. Olmsted Falls narrowly averted an upset at the hands of the freshmen-laden Toledo St. Ursula Arrows with an 18-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-20, 15-11 comeback. Early in the season the Bulldogs won the Best of Ohio tournament, where they upended the host Arrows 25-20, 19-25, 25-21 in the semifinal. Olmsted Falls will now play Magnificat, which ousted Findlay in three. Magnificat is gunning for its second straight trip to the Nutter. There were no surprises in Vandalia, as Mt. Notre Dame and Mother of Mercy won easily over Lakota West and McAuley, respectively. They will now face off in a rubber match for the state berth. The two Cincinnati powers traded five game wins over each other this season and tied for second in the GGCL. GGCL champ Cincinnati Ursuline, meanwhile, rolled over Marysville, and will take on Olentangy, which ran away with the tiebreaker in a 25-22, 21-25, 25-17, 15-25, 15-4 decision over Dublin Coffman. In Division III, Bishop Fenwick powered past Anna 25-15, 25-18, 25-23, led by Ally Beck, Abby Steinacker and Caitlin Thompson who combined for 40 kills. Lindsay Garriga had 41 assists and Jessica Levy led the defense with 15 digs. The Falcons will go for their first trip to state since 1980 against Versailles, which advanced over Bishop Ready 25-20, 20-25, 11-25, 25-18, 15-12. The Tigers were led by Jill Hemmelgarn with 19 service points, 18 assists and three aces. Megan Campbell contributed 12 kills and 7 blocks, Shelby Shimp had 21 digs, and Shelby Bey added 15 assists and seven kills. The stage is set at Ohio University for a rematch between Albany Alexander and Frankfort Adena. Last year Alexander won in three, and eventually finished runner-up to Lima Central Catholic. The Spartans advanced easily last night over Westfall in straight sets, while Adena fought off a determined Tuscarawas Valley 25-11, 18-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-10. Up in Barberton, Kara Koch recorded 24 more kills last night to lead West Salem Northwestern over Villa Angela-St. Joseph. Her state record career kills total now stands at 2166. Teammate Kristen Warner contributed 13 kills to up her career total to 1304. But Northwestern will now have to get past Gilmour Academy, which defeated New Middletown Springfield, in the regional semifinal. Last year Gilmour tripped up Northwestern in five in the regional semifinal, despite 37 kills by Koch, and most of those players are back this season. In the northwest, St. Henry continued its amazing turnaround and avenged their regional ousting last year with a 26-28, 25-15, 25-17, 25-16 win over Huron. The Redskins began this season at 2-10, albeit many of those losses came to big school powers – one was to Mt. Notre Dame 25-27, 22-25 – and they are now 16-10. St. Henry was led by 6’2” University of Louisville middle hitting recruit Brooke Mattingly and libero Jannelle Gerlach. Jesse Miedema paced Huron from the outside. St. Henry’s next opponent will be top ranked defending state champion Lima Central Catholic, which fended off scrappy Heath 23-25, 25-16, 25-11, 25-21. The Thunderbirds’ offense was fueled by setter Alexis Diglio, and Jo Jo Krieg was especially effective on the left corner at mixing line drives with off speed tips. Heath was led by second effort digging from feisty 4’11” libero Brittany Waddell. 10/30/08 - Archbishop Alter knocked off unbeaten and Division II top ranked Tipp City Tippecanoe 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-22 last night. The Knights thereby avenged losses to Tippecanoe in their last two meetings. The Red Devils ousted Alter from last year's regional, and beat them again in five in the season opener for both. Senior outside hitter Annalyse Schmitt paced the Knights with 20 kills. Alter will face Logan Elm in the regional final. In the northeast, Lake Catholic and Parma Padua Franciscan defeated Salem and Walsh Jesuit respectively. The two split road wins against each other and will settle that, who goes to state, on Saturday. Central District powers Big Walnut and Bishop Hartley advanced over River View and Claymont, respectively. In four game northwest semifinals, Mansfield Madison downed Wooster Triway and Celina upended defending state champion Toledo Central Catholic. In Division IV, Buckeye Central ousted Cornerstone Christian, which had advanced to the regional for the first time ever. The Buckettes will be trying for their ninth trip to state, and first since 2001, when they face Kidron Central Christian in the final. Central defeated Mineral Ridge. Fort Loramie knocked off Sidney Lehman Catholic 25-21, 25-11, 25-22 to earn a third shot at Jackson Center, which downed Fisher Catholic, on Saturday. Lehman had nipped Fort Loramie in a 16-14 tiebreaker three weeks ago. Jackson Center won both league contests with Fort Loramie in straight sets, but their second meeting was a 25-23, 25-23, 27-25 nail biter. Elsewhere, Newark Catholic ousted Tuscarawas Central Catholic. They will face South Webster which took Beaver Eastern. In the northwest, Marion Local ended Tiffin Calvert's three match win streak over ranked teams, while Leipsic defeated Pettisville. 10/29/08 - Marysville rallied from an 0-2 deficit to stun seventh ranked Bishop Watterson 20-25, 15-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-12 in a Central Division District final last Saturday, thereby ending Watterson's six year run as district champions. It was the Monarchs' first district title ever. Leading Marysville were Hannah McShea with 35 digs and 23 kills, and Meghan Gugel with 51 assists. Ironically, Marysville averted a similar comeback by Westerville Central in the semifinal 25-16, 25-21, 13-25, 18-25, 15-13. Elsewhere in Central, Olentangy dropped Pickerington North from the ranks of the unbeaten with a four set win and advanced to a regional matchup with Dublin Coffman. Cincinnati McAuley continued its amazing post-season run by beating Centerville for a district crown. The 9-16 Mohawks, who upended Cincinnati St. Ursula in five the week before, will now face Mother of Mercy which ousted Lebanon. Another team that's been coming on strong is 15-11 Lakota West. The Firebirds stopped Seton in four and advanced to a date with Mt. Notre Dame. Toledo St. Ursula avenged two losses to Notre Dame Academy with a four game win. The youthful Arrows will travel to the Norwalk regional to face undefeated Olmsted Falls in a rematch of their Best of Ohio semifinal. In the northeast, Cloverleaf downed Wooster to win its first district title and will now meet perennial power Mentor. Meanwhile, a resurgent Stow-Monroe Falls will take on newcomer Brecksville-Broadview Hts in the lower bracket. In Division II, 26-0 Tipp City Tippecanoe and 17-8 Archbishop Alter are headed for a showdown tonight at Wilmington. Tippecanoe nipped Alter 25-19, 23-25, 25-22, 24-26, 15-10 in the first match of the season, and their records are misleading. Alter was also nipped in five by Mother of Mercy and Chaminade-Julienne (twice), and also lost to Ursuline, McNicholas and some Indiana powers. Notably, Tippecanoe defeated McNicholas in four in their district final. Elsewhere, Walsh Jesuit ousted second ranked Kenston 25-12, 25-19, 19-25, 22-25, 15-12. 10/25/08 - West Salem Northwestern advances to regional with strong finish against Orrville 10/23/08 - West Salem Northwestern, Orrville head for District final rematch Gilmour Academy advanced to the regionals with a hard fought 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 win over a determined Berkshire. It was the third win this year over Berkshire for the Lancers, who beat Chagrin Falls in four in the district semifinal on Monday. Elsewhere, it's been a tournament of reversals for some teams. Unranked Cincinnati McAuley avenged two losses to twelfth rated Cincinnati St. Ursula with a 29-27, 20-25, 16-25, 25-17 15-12 sectional win last Saturday. The Mohawks will play unranked Centerville, which advanced in straight sets over tenth ranked Chaminade-Julienne, in the district final. Cincinnati Seton, which finished 0-10 in the GGCL, toppled 17th rated Lakota East, and advanced to a district final with Lakota West. In Division IV, unranked Tiffin Calvert upended 20-2 and eleventh ranked New Riegel in the sectional opener, and then beat fifteenth ranked Mohawk in the final. On Tuesday the Senecas knocked off sixth ranked Hopewell-Loudon 25-17, 16-25, 16-25, 26-24, 15-22 in a district semifinal. Calvert finished fourth in the Midland Athletic League, behind the three teams they beat. Hopewell-Loudon won the league with a 10-0 mark. 10/21/08 - Midwest Athletic Conference volleyball madness on display at New Bremen Sectional 10/16/08 - Norwalk St. Paul tunes up for post season with straight set win over Celina 10/11/08 - Balanced Gilmour Academy squad stops Independence in straight sets Parma Heights Holy Name, which entered the Coaches’ Poll at 20th this week, nipped number four Parma Padua at Padua Thursday night 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 17-25, 17-15. Players, coaches, and fans from Holy Name broke down in tears after the victory, which left the teams tied for first at 11-2 in the North Coast League. Lebanon broke open a tight match in game four and downed Centerville 25-21, 30-32, 25-22, 25-15 in the Great Western Ohio Conference Tournament championship. Toledo Notre Dame Academy defeated Toledo Central Catholic for their second straight City League crown (see Toledo Blade under Newspaper Links). 10/08/08 - Harrison defeated Anderson for the second time this year to go undefeated in the Buckeye Division of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference. 10/08/08 - Ursuline Academy fended off a furious comeback by Mt. Notre Dame to finish a perfect 10-0 in the GGCL Scarlet Division. The host Lions prevailed 25-16, 25-19, 17-25, 18-25, 18-16, and are now 21-0 overall. Two weeks ago Ursuline themselves had to rally on the road from an 0-2 to defeat Cincinnati St. Ursula. The loss dropped Mt. Notre Dame into a tie for second with Mother of Mercy, which beat Seton. Mansfield Madison clinched at least a tie for the Ohio Cardinal Conference title with a three set win over visiting Wooster. The Rams can clinch outright with a victory over last place Clear Fork on Thursday. Wooster set the stage for a possible three-way tie by upending Orrville last week, but the Generals are now third a game behind the Red Riders. New Bremen moved into sole possession of first in the Midwest Athletic Conference with a 25-23, 23-25, 13-25, 25-22, 15-7 win over visiting and then co-leader Marion Local. Tiffin Columbian nipped Norwalk on the road 25-20, 17-25, 25-20, 20-25, 15-13 to clinch the Northern Ohio League championship. The Ladies in Blue would have tied for the lead with a win. Kenston finished unbeaten in their division of the Chagrin Valley Conference for the fourth straight year with a 26-28, 25-17, 25-16, 25-17 win over second place Chagrin Falls. Grafton Midview nipped Bay 22-25, 25-22, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9 to take sole possession of first place in the West Shore Conference. Bay fell into a second place tie with Rocky River. Midview, by the way, provides living proof that it's hard to beat a team three times - even when you do it. On September 27, they won their third match over Rocky River 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 in the championship of their own Cannon Classic tournament, and that was the easiest of their three victories over the Pirates. The Middies had rallied to win the teams' first league encounter 19-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13, 18-16. But their second meeting took the cake. The Middies rallied there too 23-25, 23-25, 25-17, 32-30, 16-14 in a match that featured 58 ties. Midview appeared to have won game four 28-26, but the wrong player served that volley and Rocky River was awarded the point. After three more ties, Midview finally won to force the tiebreaker fifth game. Alas, the two schools are in different divisions and cannot meet in the state tournament. 10/04/08 - No. 5 Northwestern downs No. 2 Smithville to grab share of first place in WCAL 10/04/08 - "Team effort" lifts lineup-shuffling Walsh Jesuit over Cloverleaf 10/01/08 - Cincinnati Ursuline dominates strong Northeast Ohio Power Volleyball tourney field 09/28/09 - Northeast Ohio Invitational Tournament results 09/27/08 - Walsh Jesuit defeated Bowling Green, Mentor and Toledo Notre Dame Academy to advance to tomorrow's championship match of the Northeast Ohio Invitational Tournament. Hurricane Ike didn't help, as we were without power for almost five days last week. Other hurricanes have been more damaging where they first landed, although Ike was bad enough in Texas. But I have never witnessed or heard of a hurricane that came so far inland with so much residual wind force. All 88 counties in Ohio were affected, with at least one million out of power for at least a time. The power loss in Ohio was even mentioned in The Economist magazine. At any rate here is a brief summary of highlights of the past three weeks 09/25/08 - Mentor will host the Northeast Ohio Invitational Tournament this weekend.
