Three OCC teams advanced, Mt. Vernon in the North and Worthington Kilbourne and Dublin Coffman in the East. Lakewood St. Edward beat Stow. State Tournament Pairings and Results (updated 5/24/04) 05/21/04 - Worthington Kilbourne won a cliffhanger over Hilliard Darby 28-26, 25-16, 26-28, 24-26, 15-13. Pickerington Central, Dublin Coffman and Gahanna also advanced in the East. Winners around the state were LaSalle, St. Xavier, Kettering Fairmont, Fairborn, Lakewood St. Edward, and Walsh Jesuit 5/21/04 - Fairmont Beats C-J (Dayton Daily News, by Debbie Juniewicz) 5/20/04 - Centerville sweeps past Middletown (Dayton Daily News, by Debbie Juniewicz) 5/20/04 - Mt. Vernon outlasted Akron Hoban 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-6 in a North Region semifinal played last night at St. Ignatius. Each of the first four games was in doubt until the last point as the teams repeatedly traded leads. The Yellow Jackets took charge in the final. Nick Orsborn led Mt. Vernon with 30 assists, 15 kills and 9 blocks. Wade Laughrey and Trent Kochis had 14 kills apiece, and those two plus Allen Culbertson combined for 28 blocks. Kochis, John Vonch and Alex Nixon scored a total of 8 ace serves. In the West, Centerville and Lakota East advanced. 5/19/04 - Elder toppled Sycamore last night 21-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-17, 15-13, as the teams battled for almost two and a half hours. Moeller throttled McNicholas 25-8, 25-10, 25-6. Moeller gets the nod in State Tournament Preview Kilbourne tops Mt. Westerville South 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 05/05/04 - LaSalle won a nail biter over host Centerville last night 25-21, 13-25, 25-19, 24-26, 15-12. In an exciting match on Monday, Kent Roosevelt beat Walsh Jesuit 24-26, 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 04/30/04 - Centerville defeated Fairborn last night 25-22, 25-20, 25-19. Although it was a three game match, the Skyhawks put up good battle and every game was tied at 18. Fairborn coach John Cash felt Centerville's blocking was the difference in the match. 04/29/04 - Kilbourne takes charge in OCC with win over Coffman. 04/29/04 - Moeller advanced to 17-1 with a 25-12, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17 home court win over Centerville last night. This was the Crusader's second win in five days over the Elks. It has been a rough week for Centerville who also lost at St. Xavier in a 25-23, 27-25, 22-25, 19-25, 15-12 cliff hanger on Monday. Speaking of cliff hangers, Kent Roosevelt outlasted Stow on Tuesday evening 25-12, 25-20, 18-25, 25-27, 16-14. 04/24/04 - Moeller wins Centerville Elite (Scores) 04/21/04 - Centerville Elite Tournament on Saturday features Moeller, St. Xavier, Elder, St. Edward, Fairborn, Louisville Trinity and Wapahani (Indiana). Matches begin at 10:00AM. 04/18/04 - Moeller toppled St. Xavier to win the Wolf Tournament title 25-14, 26-28, 25-18, 22-25, 15-10. LaSalle beat Centerville for third and Gahanna nipped Kilbourne for fifth. Coffman won the Silver beating St. Charles in the final, while Delaware beat Thomas Worthington to take the Bronze. 04/17/04 - Kettering Fairmont (6-0) beat Tri-Village and Lakota West to win their tri-match. 04/16/04 - LaSalle came back from a 17-20 deficit in game four and beat Moeller in five to hand the Crusaders their first loss. Elsewhere, Mt. Vernon knocked off Stow 25-16, 25-20, 25-20. Nick Orsborn led with 3 aces, 12 assists, 8 kills, 6 blocks. Trent Kochis added 9 kills and Allen Culbertson had 8 blocks. 04/14/04 - Hilliard Davidson handed Pickerington Central their first loss last night winning a 24-26, 27-25, 21-25, 25-16, 15-13 nail biter. LaSalle improved to 4-1 with a 27-25, 28-26, 21-25, 25-18 win over Purcell Marian. Leaders for 6-2 Purcell were Max Holt, 13 kills; Jordan Peelman, 15 digs; and Mike Fisk, 24 assists and 11 kills. Mount Vernon won their fourth straight, knocking off Darby 17-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-14. Nick Orsborn led the Yellow Jackets with 25 assists, 4 kills and 9 blocks. Allen Culbertson had 6 kills and 15 blocks with Trent Kochis adding 9 kills and 8 blocks. 04/13/04 - The following teams are currently undefeated: Pickerington Central (8-0), Moeller (6-0), Centerville (5-0), Sycamore (4-0) and Fairmont (2-0). Click on the link to view Team Records. 04/09/04 - Gahanna scores big win over Hilliard Darby 25-16, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15. 04/05/04 - Sycamore pulled off a major coup in winning their own tri-match Saturday, as they defeated Elder in nail biting come-from-behind fashion 12-25, 19-25, 29-27, 25-23, 16-14. Sycamore Coach Stan Kaniecki said it was the first time the Aviators had beaten Elder during his tenure which began in 2000, adding "I can't imagine we ever defeated them before then either". Moeller traveled to Hilliard where they beat host Davidson 25-14, 25-23, 25-18, and throttled Stow 25-10, 25-11, 25-11, behind the hitting of Mark Wimmers and Robby Klein and passing of libero Nick Engel. Outside hitter Keith Bradner provided several timely and well-placed kills, and Ryan Trainor, Dustin Hunter and Eric Cioffi provided balance to their attack. Trailing 12-7 in game two, Davidson came on strong and took lead the lead at 15-14, led by hitting and blocking of Josh Youngblood and Lucas Gunka. Michael Clifford made a heads up back pedaling pass at the back line to save one volley which ended with Youngblood and Gunka blocking Klein, and helped fuel their rally. But after three more Davidson leads, the last at 23-22, Moeller prevailed, winning on an ace by Hunter. Stow never got untracked in their match with the Crusaders as Engel repeatedly parried spikes by middle hitter Ben Spurlock into nice passes. Westerville North won the Thomas Worthington Invitational, beating the host Cardinals in the final 25-19, 20-25, 25-20, 15-25, 15-7. Kent Roosevelt nipped Kettering Alter for third. Pickerington Central improved to 7-0, beating host Mt. Vernon and Westerville South to win a tri-match. Mt. Vernon topped Gahanna in their other match, while Gahanna gained a split by beating South. St. Xavier passed their first big GCL test Friday night as they knocked off LaSalle 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-20. The Bombers were up a good part of game one, but LaSalle battled back for the win. St. Xavier's serving picked up thereafter helping them prevail. Dublin Coffman won an important OCC battle on the road Friday, knocking off Hilliard Darby 25-20, 25-16, 25-21. Andy Pompei, junior defensive specialist for Lakewood St. Edward, has qualified to tryout for the Boys Youth National Team in Lake Placid, New York this July. 18 players age 17 and under made this team and they will train for three weeks at the Olympic Training Center. Twelve athletes will be selected to represent the USA in the Dominican Republic at the NORCECA Zonal Championships. A win there will guarantee a bid to the World Championships the following year.
