Fairfield (14-10) 15-12, 15-11 In the bragging rights match for the NE, Stow defeated Archbishop Hoban 10-15, 15-9, 15-6. Hoban won the NE seed #2 bracket slot and plays Pickerington on Thursday at Hoban. On April 12, Hoban defeated Pickerington in the Silver Bracket of the Wolf Open 15-10, 7-15, 15-7. Like last Saturday Stow
had to overcome a deficit to win. After falling behind early in game 1, 6-13,
Stow struggled to get on track. Hoban kept up the tips and Stow couldn't dig
them up. The Bulldogs eventually lost game 1, 10-15. Stow once again found
themselves down by four at 4-8 in game 2. The Stow coaching staff had to change
their game plan. After a time out, 5/16/03 - OCC caps banner year with first ever Challenge (Article). OCC announces All-League honors. State Tournament Information 5/14/03 - Hilliard Darby tripped Gahanna 15-8, 15-7 to win the OCC Challenge for first place teams. Dublin Scioto, Mount Vernon and Dublin Coffman were also winners. (OCC Challenge) 5/11/03 - Moeller won the GCL Showcase, beating St. Xavier in the championship match. Lakota East and Stow both won tri-matches. Dublin Coffman brought home the Gold title in the Butler Invitational. (Results) 5/10/03 - Stow/Lakewood St. Edward highlights 5/8/03 - Stow defeated Lakewood St. Edward 10-15, 15-13, 15-9. It was the Eagle's second loss of the season, both coming at the hands of Stow. Elder stopped Lakota East 15-5, 15-7. 5/6/03 - Centerville beat Elder on the road last night 15-10, 10-15, 15-6. Since losing to Roger Bacon on April 16, the Elks have won eight straight and are now 16-3. Their last four wins are over Elder twice, Moeller and Beavercreek. 5/4/03 - LaSalle toppled Elder Friday night 15-5, 12-15, 15-2. It was the eleventh straight win for the Lancers who are now 14-3. 5/2/03 - The season got more complicated on Thursday, as Elder (15-3) defeated Moeller (16-4) 15-2, 9-15, 15-8. Last Saturday Elder beat St. Xavier 15-2, 15-12. Lakota East had their 31 game winning streak ended, but came back to win the match against Fairfield 4-15, 15-11, 15-9 and finish the GMC season undefeated. 5/1/03 - Cincinnati LaSalle beat Indianapolis Cathedral and Louisville Trinity to win the Cathedral Tournament last Saturday. The tournament was played under international/college rules, with rally scoring and let serving. Cathedral was ranked number one in Indiana, and Trinity is one of the top teams in Kentucky. Olentangy and St. Charles have been making noise in Central District. The Braves have taken three of their last four, including a win over Delaware. St. Charles took second at Pickerington Saturday, beating Mt. Vernon in the process. They followed this up with a win over Pickerington this Wednesday. Meanwhile, Watterson gave tenth ranked Stow its worst defeat of the season in Centerville's Elite Tournament last weekend. This jumbles an already confusing state playoff picture. 4/30/03 - Centerville Elite article 4/26/03 - Centerville tops Moeller and finally wins own tournament (Centerville Elite scores). The Elks may have won in 1994, but not since. Hilliard Darby beats St. Charles to win Pickerington Tournament. 4/24/03 - Lakota East beat Milford tonight 15-6, 15-4. The Thunder Hawks are now 11-2 after an 0-2 start, and are 5-0 in the GMC. Stow overcame a 5-11 deficit in game two and beat Hilliard Davidson 15-8, 15-12. 4/24/03 - In the battle for the Greater Catholic League title, third ranked St. Xavier won a tense nail biter last night over top ranked Moeller, 6-15, 15-13, 20-18. This result was to be expected given the topsy-turvy way the 2003 season is going. The Crusaders had beaten St. Xavier in two games less than two weeks ago. That was on April 14, just an hour or so after the Bombers beat Centerville. That was only three days after Centerville beat Moeller. And when all that happened Centerville was top ranked and Moeller was third. Such crazy results have not been confined to the southwestern part of the state. Central District has been a veritable nightmare for those folks who like everything to be neat and predictable. And in the northeast, earlier in the season, Stow's tournament saw three then-unbeaten teams split with each other. With everybody knocking each other off, the 2003 state tournament is almost impossible to figure out. But it could be the most exciting ever. Now there's one prediction that looks pretty solid. 4/22/03 Correction - Louisville St. Xavier will participate in Centerville's Elite Tournament this weekend, not Trinity as previously reported. St. Xavier recently beat Trinity and may be Kentucky's top team this season. 4/20/03 - Another big week - The state's top three teams will go at each other again this week. On Wednesday (4/23) Moeller travels across town to meet archrival St. Xavier in what may decide the Greater Catholic League conference title. On Saturday the two teams join Elder in a trek to Elk Country to participate in the Centerville Elite Tournament. They will be joined by Stow, Louisville Trinity, Beavercreek and Watterson. Trinity has one of the top programs in Kentucky. They went undefeated in 2002, and won the Kentucky State Championship.
In other action, Pickerington will host their
annual tournament on Saturday. The field includes 4/19/03 - Lakota East knocked off cross town rival Lakota West for the first time in three years in straight games Tuesday evening, 15-13, 15-12. The Thunder Hawks rallied from deficits of 6-0 and 10-3 for the come-from-behind win in the first game of the night. In the second game the Hawks dominated the net with key plays by senior Mike Brausch, who finished with 9 kills. Nate Corbridge added some excellent setting recording 20 assists. John Stahly had a strong match with 7 kills. East has won 9 straight matches and in the process has accumulated 18 consecutive wins, both team records. 4/18/03 - Stow Tri-Match 4/12/03 - Wolf Open Article and Results 4/8/03 - Dublin Scioto knocked off Mt. Vernon tonight 15-12, 8-15, 15-6. The Irish were led by Kevin Douce with 20 kills, 6 blocks and 5 digs, and Joey Rossetter with 13 kills, 3 blocks and 7 digs. In action Monday night, St. Xavier avenged a previous loss by handing Centerville their first defeat 15-10, 15-12. The Bombers came into the match well prepared. Scioto, St. X and Centerville will all play in Worthington Kilbourne's Wolf Classic this weekend. Stow Invitational Article and Scores Big week coming up The week of April 7-12 should clarify who the favorites are in the State Tournament hunt. This coming weekend Worthington Kilbourne will host the Wolf Tourney, one of the State's biggest tournament events. The two day extravaganza will consist of scrimmages on Friday to determine the three brackets for Saturday. The top eight teams from Friday will play in the tournament championship bracket. Twenty four teams will participate in total, including top teams from all four regions: St. Xavier and Moeller from Southwest; Dublin Scioto and Hilliard Darby from Central; Centerville from Northwest; and, Stow from Northeast. Several strong teams capable of knocking off one of the front runners will also attend. The entire field is as follows: Akron Hoban, Centennial, Centerville, Delaware, Dublin Coffman, Dublin Scioto, Gahanna, Hilliard Darby, Hilliard Davidson, Independence, Moeller, Olentangy, Pickerington, Roger Bacon, St. Charles, St. Xavier, Stow, Thomas Worthington, Toledo Central Catholic, Walsh Jesuit, Watterson, Westerville North, Westerville South, Worthington Kilbourne. With this group of teams it is just possible another front runner may emerge. Centerville has a particularly brutal schedule this week. Prior to the weekend, the Elks host St. Xavier on Monday and Moeller on Wednesday, and they travel to LaSalle on Tuesday. St. Xavier will also be busy after Monday's trip up to Elk Country, hosting Elder on Tuesday and Roger Bacon on Thursday. Other matches of interest involving front runners include: Tuesday, Dublin Scioto at Mt. Vernon; Wednesday, Fairborn at Beavercreek, Stow at Lake and Lakewood St. Edward at Walsh Jesuit.
