Kent Roosevelt wins on road over Archbishop Hoban Thursday, April 7, 2005 By Tony Mosca Kent Roosevelt was able to out last a young Archbishop Hoban team Wednesday (4/6/05) night 25-20, 26-28, 25-21, 25-22. As the score would indicate, the match was back & forth most of the night and was loaded with action. In the first game the visitors from Kent jumped out to an 8-2 lead behind serving by Henry Zhang & Basil Al-Madani, along with a couple Jacob Vanags kills. From that point the teams traded side-outs & points for a while. Hoban then made a run, led by Steve Baumgartner’s serving that cut the Rough Riders' lead to 15-14. But Kent pushed on to finish the game with some good serving from Dick Rogers and a couple Simon Messerly kills. After exchanging a few points, Zhang came up with a big kill to win the game for Kent. The second game started off with the teams exchanging several side-outs. Michael Antonucci from Hoban and Vanags took turns making kills, and Messerly chipped in with a block. Then Kent made the first run of the second game behind Zhang’s serving. When the Knights got the serve back it looked like Baumgartner was going to lead a Hoban run as he started with an ace, but Vanags quickly stopped that with a big kill. Hoban, however, was able to push the game to a 22-22 tie behind 2 kills from Dave Lanham. The teams then went back and forth with some big side-out kills, before the Knights put the game away using a Baumgartner kill and a big block from Curtis May. Hoban jumped out to the lead in the third game behind Baumgartner’s serving and Bryan Milane’s hitting. Vanags scored a big kill to get Kent the serve and Al-Madani led them on their run. Andy Veverka came up with a nice dig leading to an Antonucci kill to get back the ball for Hoban. The teams then exchanged several points with Zhang and May coming up with some big kills. The next run of points came with Al-Madani again serving for Kent, behind a couple of aces and a block from Vanags & Rogers. Milane ended that run with a kill. Messerly upped Kent’s lead to 23-20 with a block and Rogers put the game away with a kill off the block. The Knights again took the lead in game four, and in fact led most of the game. With Milane & Antonucci really banging away with some big kills, Hoban forged out to an 18-11 lead. Kent then made their run with Vanags serving and nice blocking from Joey Grumney. By the time Milane was able to come up with another big kill the score was tied 18-18. Hoban moved ahead 20-18 behind Milane’s serving, but a Messerly dump quashed any hopes of a run. Grumney’s serving ran the score to 24-20 for Kent and Zhang finished the match with a block
