2003 State Volleyball Tournament - Regional Picks

The teams in each regional are ranked in order from 1 to 4, without regard as to what round they meet. Records are in parentheses, if known. For comparison purposes, team rankings in the final Coaches Poll are also provided.

Division I

Hudson Regional (Region 1)

Austintown-Fitch (21-4) vs. Solon (20-5)

Mentor (23-3) vs. Massillon Perry (18-6)

Regional Rankings: Austintown-Fitch (1), Mentor (2), Solon (3), Massillon Perry (4)

Coaches Poll: Mentor (5), Solon (12), Austintown-Fitch (14), Massillon Perry (N/R)

Unlike the other Division one regionals, this one has no obvious favorite. Austintown-Fitch lost some matches early but that was when middle hitter Maggie Case was out with an injury. Even then they gave Toledo St. Ursula a match with good defensive play. One of their losses was to Perry, but they avenged that 15-11, 15-3.

Mentor beat Solon 15-7, 15-10 earlier in the season. The Cardinals also beat Magnificat who beat Solon. Mentor played in Piqua's tournament where they won in a two hour marathon over Sidney Lehman, then lost to Oak Hills in the final. Their other losses are to Elyria and Kenston.

Solon has beaten Kenston twice. At Mercy's Fall Classic they knocked off Chaminade-Julienne and Louisville Holy Cross, while losing to Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) and Vandalia-Butler. (Chaminade-Julienne beat Butler last week in a District Final). Their other wins include Hudson and Wooster and they lost to Elyria.

Besides Fitch, Perry has lost to Hoover, GlenOak, Carrollton, Canton McKinley and Orrville (6-15, 19-17, 11-15). Notable wins include Fitch, Claymont and Hoover.

Norwalk Regional (Region 2)

Magnificat (19-5) vs. Amherst Steele (24-1)

Toledo St. Ursula (24-1) vs. Perrysburg (17-8)

Regional Rankings: St. Ursula (1), Magnificat (2), Amherst Steele (3), Perrysburg (4)

Coaches Poll: St. Ursula (2), Amherst Steele (6), Magnificat (8), Perrysburg (N/R)

St. Ursula is the obvious pick here. Their only loss came in the championship match of their tournament when Cincinnati St. Ursula beat them 15-9, 15-8. Cincinnati is undefeated and ranked number one in the nation as well as the state.

The Toledo St. Ursula Invitational had by far the strongest field of any tournament played in the state this year. Canal Winchester and St. Henry, both still alive in state tourney action and ranked second in Division II and first in Division IV respectively, received their only losses at Toledo. Canal fell to Toledo 15-2, 15-4, and St. Henry was beaten in similar fashion by Cincinnati.

The Arrows also won the Magnificat Fall Showcase handily with victories over Austintown Fitch and Northview. And they nipped powerhouse Cincinnati Ursuline 15-13, 13-15, 15-13 in a tri-match at Vandalia-Butler.

Perrysburg beat Findlay and Bowling Green to get here. But the Yellowjackets lost to St. Ursula at the end of the season, and their prospects in the rematch do not look good. If they do find a way to win then the regional becomes wide open.

Amherst Steele and Magnificat are pretty even. The Blue Streaks beat Steele 15-10, 15-7 in the regular season, giving them the nod. However, Steele beat Walsh Jesuit who beat Magnificat. Steele has a better record but Mags played a stronger schedule. Steele beat Westlake and Rocky River twice, plus Fairview, Norwalk and Norwalk St. Paul.

Magnificat played well at the Mercy Fall Classic, knocking off St. Henry (Ky.), and host Mercy. They won Rocky River's tournament, beating Lake Catholic, and beat the Cougars again the next week. They also beat Solon and Mansfield Madison. Their losses include Mentor, Ursuline (8-15, 15-17) and Sylvania Northview.

Hilliard Davidson Regional (Region 3)

Bishop Watterson (23-2) vs. Cincinnati Ursuline (22-3)

Westerville North (19-6) vs. Dublin Coffman (22-4)

Regional Rankings: Ursuline (1), Watterson (2), Dublin Coffman (3), Westerville North (4)

Coaches Poll: Ursuline (3), Watterson (15), Dublin Coffman (N/R), Westerville North (N/R)

You have to go with Ursuline in this one. The Lions have beaten Westerville North this year 15-6, 15-1. They are 5-0 versus McAuley and Mt. Notre Dame. Watterson is 0-2 against those two teams. Ursuline hammered McAuley 15-0, 15-3 for the district title last week. They have very balanced hitting, the setting is solid and their defense id superb. Ursuline gave Cincinnati St. Ursula two tough matches, and they have beaten the other GGCL Division I teams twice each.

All that being said, Watterson could prove meddlesome. For one thing, they took Mt. Notre Dame to three. And the Eagles have beaten many of the top Central Division I teams. The last week of the season they won Westerville South's tri-match, stopping South, Big Walnut and then undefeated Centerburg 15-12, 15-12. The Eagles have height and they have a potent hitting attack.

Coffman beat Westerville North three times, with each one getting closer. The score of the final match was as close as it gets at 16-14, 16-14. Coffman was beaten by Centerburg 15-7, 15-4, and twice by Newark.

In addition to losing to Coffman, Westerville North was beaten by Watterson. But North beat Newark twice, so things get a bit jumbled when comparing these results.

Vandalia-Butler Regional (Region 4)

Cincinnati St. Ursula (25-0) vs. Dayton Chaminade-Julienne (19-6)

Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame (16-8) vs. Cincinnati Seton (14-11)

Regional Rankings: St. Ursula (1), Mt. Notre Dame (2), Seton (3), Chaminade-Julienne (4)

Coaches Poll: St. Ursula (1), Mt. Notre Dame (4), Seton (11), Chaminade-Julienne (N/R)

This regional features two athletes who played for Team USA in Poland this past August, St. Ursula setter Bryn Kehoe and Mt. Notre Dame hitter Danielle Meyer. Kehoe will play for Stanford next year while Meyer heads up to Columbus to join the Buckeyes.

St. Ursula is the heavy favorite here, having gone undefeated against the toughest schedule in the state. The Bulldogs won Toledo St. Ursula's Invitational, giving both the host school and Division IV power St. Henry their only losses. The Bulldogs also beat every GGCL Division I team twice. They knocked off Louisville Assumption on the road, and repeated as champions of the Mizuno Classic, hosted by St. Charles East in Chicago.

Mt. Notre Dame has eight losses but four of those, including one to Seton, came when Meyer was out with an injury, but - bad news for opponents - she recently returned to the lineup. MND lost twice to Ursuline and St. Ursula. They defeated the other GGCL Division I teams before Meyer's injury. They also beat Roger Bacon.

Seton beat Austintown-Fitch to finish third in Magnificat's Fall Showcase, They took MND to three with Meyer in the lineup. The Saints looked sharp in their district final win over Mother of Mercy.

Chaminade-Julienne will have their hand full with St. Ursula. The Eagles struggled earlier in the year with Kettering Fairmont, the team the Bulldogs beat 15-9, 15-0 to win last week's district final. Their wins include Piqua, Celina and Sidney Lehman, and they have lost to such teams as St. Henry, Mentor, Solon.

Division II

Stow-Munroe Falls Regional (Region 5)

Kenston (23-3) vs. Salem (22-4)

Lake Catholic (22-3) vs. Rocky River (14-12)

Regional Rankings: Lake Catholic (1), Kenston (2), Rocky River (3), Salem (4)

Coaches Poll: Lake Catholic (8), Kenston (12), Salem (14), Rocky River (N/R)

The Stow Regional was expected to have some new faces this year. For one thing, Lake Catholic hitting and digging star Jessica Sabath graduated. With Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin and Lakeview having lots of returning talent, one of them figured to win the Jefferson Area District.

Rocky River lost not only their coach but their starting lineup to graduation. And graduation hit Hubbard hard too. Only Kenston, who made it with a young team last year, was expected to return.

Well, its regional week. Top seeded Salem managed to dethrone Hubbard. But otherwise, we’ll see familiar teams at this regional.

Actually, Lake Catholic figured to be as strong or stronger than last year, what with five starters including setter back. It usually happens that way when a team loses only their top starting hitter. That’s because the spot gets filled by a talented replacement, so its not as if only five players are on the floor. And the five returning starters come back with another year’s experience under their belts, and that usually offsets the loss of the star.

The Cougars have pretty much performed as they did last year. NDCL did beat them once, but Lake Catholic avenged the loss to tie for the league title, and won the rubber match in last week’s district final. Magnificat beat the Cougars twice this year for their other losses. Last year Lake Catholic beat Magnificat, but they lost to Walsh Jesuit, a team they beat this year. Those differences be attributed to statistical randomness that permeates all sports.

And Rocky River is better than their record shows. They have twelve losses, but look who beat them. Elyria, Amherst Steele, Westlake twice each. Mentor, Solon and Canton McKinley. Rocky River split with North Olmsted and Fairview. All strong teams.

Kenston was, of course, expected to return. They defeated Beaumont and Trinity to win Beaumont’s Invitational, and later tripped up Mentor and Fairview to win at Stow. Kenston has lost to Solon (twice), and, more germaine to this regional, to Lake Catholic.

Salem split regular season matches with Poland Seminary and Hubbard. They beat both of those teams in the district. Salem’s other losses are to West Holmes and GlenOak. Other wins include Bishop Hartley and Columbiana Crestview.

Wooster Regional (Region 6)

Mogadore Field (24-2) vs. Carrollton (22-3)

Canal Fulton Northwest (18-8) vs. West Holmes (22-3)

Regional Rankings: West Holmes (1), Field (2), Carrollton (3), Northwest (4)

Coaches Poll: West Holmes (6), Field (11), Carrollton (N/R), Northwest (N/R)

West Holmes is picked to win this region and return to the Nutter Center. Their only losses are to Mansfield Madison and Orrville, teams they also beat. The Knights are the only team this year to beat Tuscarawas Valley, Kidron Central Christian and Orrville. They also have wins over Claymont, Louisville and Massillon Jackson.

Field is the only team this year to beat Newark Catholic, where they also beat Thomas Worthington to win the latter’s tournament. Their other loss is to Hubbard.

Carrollton has split with Canal Fulton Northwest and Louisville, and lost to Tuscarawas Valley.

Northwest split with Louisville and Carrollton. They also split with Canton South, whom they beat in the district final at South.

Ontario Regional (Region 7)

Canal Winchester (24-1) vs. Bellevue (23-3)

Big Walnut (20-5) vs. Maumee (20-6)

Regional Rankings: Canal Winchester (1), Bellevue (2), Big Walnut (3), Maumee (4)

Coaches Poll: Canal Winchester (2), Big Walnut (17), Bellevue (N/R), Maumee (N/R)

Canal Winchester has been beaten only once this year, by Toledo St. Ursula. That was at SUA’s Invitational where the Indians beat Elyria and Anthony Wayne. Their other wins include both Hilliards, Darby and Davidson, and Bishop Hartley.

Led by hitting and defensive star Alisha Dials, the Indians looked sharp in a 15-8, 15-7 district final win over DeSales. If they can continue with that kind of play they can make their first trip back to state since they won it all in 1986.

The other teams appear to be pretty equal, so should Canal fall, this regional is wide open.

Bellevue won the Northern Ohio League this year splitting three game matches with Norwalk and beating Galion twice. They beat those teams again in districts. Their other losses are to Newark Catholic and Huron.

All but one of Maumee’s losses came in league play where they split with Bowling Green, Northview and Anthony Wayne, and lost two times to Perrysburg. They also lost a three game squeaker to North Royalton. Maumee is no stranger to close matches, with a 14-16, 15-12, 19-17 win over BG. In the district final they knocked off Ottawa-Glandorf 13-15, 15-11, 16-14.

Big Walnut goes in spurts. The Golden Eagles have solid setting in Kim Novak, along with talented spikers and when their passing game is on they can score points in a hurry. Big Walnut’s wins include Jonathan Alder and Mount Vernon. They won the Pickerington Central Quad. On the last day of the season they were beaten by Watterson, Centerburg and host Westerville South in a quad of top Central teams. Big Walnut beat Granville in the district final.

Wilmington Regional (Region 8)

Unioto (19-6) vs. Archbishop Alter (23-2)

St. Bernard Roger Bacon (21-5) vs. Cincinnati McNicholas (14-7)

Regional Rankings: Archbishop Alter (1), Roger Bacon (2), McNicholas (3), Unioto (4)

Coaches Poll: Archbishop Alter (1), Roger Bacon (7), McNicholas (N/R), Unioto (N/R)

There will be a reversal in roles if the favorites make the regional final. Last year Roger Bacon was defending State Champion with a senior laden lineup, while Archbishop Alter had an extremely strong, but younger, team. Alter beat Roger Bacon and went on to win the State.

This year Alter has the senior laden team while Roger Bacon is loaded with talented, but younger, players. Alter features the hitting-setting duo of Carrie DeMange and Ali Hausfeld, both headed for Duke next year. The Spartans are led by sophomore setter Katie Veatch. Alter has had a very impressive season.

Alter and Roger Bacon are the two strongest Division II teams in the state, and barring surprises, they will meet in the regional final.

One highlight of Alter's season was a fifth place finish in the Nike Challenge, where they knocked off nationally ranked Bellevue (NE) and Louisville Sacred Heart. Another highlight was beating Roger Bacon twice.

Roger Bacon has looked very impressive with wins over Seton, Mercy, Oak Hills, Chaminade-Julienne and McAuley. They gave Alter two good matches. They outscored Mt. Notre Dame in a 13-15, 15-8, 13-15 loss. The Spartans defeated a strong Benjamin Logan 15-1, 15-4 in the district final.

McNicholas has seven losses, four to Alter and Roger Bacon (16-18, 8-15 and 5-15, 15-11, 3-15), the others to Seton, Walnut Hills and Mercy. They are one of the stronger teams in the state, but are not likely to get anywhere in this regional.

Unioto joins Adena and Westfall as Scioto Valley Conference teams making the regionals. They had a good season, splitting with Westfall and giving Adena two of their closer matches. They almost beat Wheelersburg 15-8, 11-15, 13-15. Unfortunately, they are in the Southwest Regional.

Division III

Barberton Regional (Region 9)

Columbiana (18-8) vs. Girard (17-9)

Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph (19-6) vs. Orrville (24-1)

Regional Rankings: Orrville (1), Villa Angela-St. Joseph (2), Columbiana (3), Girard (4)

Coaches Poll: Orrville (2), Villa Angela-St. Joseph (13), Columbiana (N/R), Girard (N/R)

Two years ago Villa Angela-St. Joseph came out of nowhere with nine losses to win the state title, pulling off an incredible comeback from something like eight match point serves against Huron in the semifinal. The Lady Vikings moved up to Division II last year, but now they are back. Meg O'Donnell, a sophomore middle hitter who starred in the comeback is now a senior.

This time VASJ has six losses, once again after playing a challenging schedule. They lost to Lake Catholic, Walsh Jesuit, Beuamont, Copley, Olmsted Falls and Regina. They have wins over Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, Regina, Massillon Perry and Keystone.

VASJ could win it all again. But to do so they first need to get past favored Orrville, whose only loss is to West Holmes. Orrville subsequently beat the Knights twice. Orrville also beat Mansfield Madison twice, plus Canal Fulton Northwest, Smithville, Copley and Hoover. They outlasted Massillon Perry 15-6, 17-19, 15-11.

Columbiana gets a nod over Girard, having beaten them 15-10, 15-8. Columbiana also beat Poland Seminary who beat Girard. Girard has seventeen wins, but none against teams remaining in the tournament.

Findlay Liberty-Benton Regional (Region 10)

Margaretta (20-5) vs. Rockford Parkway (10-15)

Wellington (20-4) vs. Genoa (22-3)

Regional Rankings: Margaretta (1), Genoa (2), Parkway (3), Wellington (4)

Coaches Poll: Genoa (9), Margaretta (17), Wellington (20), Rockford Parkway (N/R)

Picking this regional could not be any tougher.

First, we have Margaretta who knocked off then undefeated top ranked Huron in the district semifinal. That would seem to make them the obvious choice to win. But the Polar Bears and Genoa have some common opponents with similar results. Both teams lost close matches to Keystone at Northwood’s Invitational. Both beat Northwood, but Genoa had an easier time. And they have similar results against other opponents like Port Clinton and Oak Harbor.

Margaretta and Genoa look pretty equal.

Then there is Wellington, who does not have many common opponents with the other teams. But they did play Keystone twice and lost close both times. They also lost to Midview twice in close three game matches. (Margaretta won a three game match over Midview). Wellington won all of their other matches.

Finally, we have Parkway who finished the regular season 7-15. So, we can at least eliminate them as a contender, right?

Wrong!

Parkway plays in the Midwest Athletic Conference. Their league losses include St. Henry, Minster, Versailles, Ft. Recovery, Marion Local, and Coldwater. They’ve also lost matches to Convoy Crestview, Wauseon and Defiance. An interesting thing about Parkway’s losses is that, usually, one game has been close. Against St. Henry it was 12-15, 6-15. Versus Sidney Lehman the score was 8-15, 14-16. Marion Local 15-17, 3-15. Minster 12-15, 4-15.

If Parkway puts two games together, they can play with anyone.

This could be an interesting regional. Parkway is the only contestant here that has ever been to state before, winning it all in 1996 and 1997.

Logan Regional (Region 11)

Tuscarawas Valley (25-1) vs. Newark Catholic (24-1)

Westfall (21-3) vs. Albany Alexander (17-6)

Regional Rankings: Tuscarawas Valley (1), Newark Catholic (2), Westfall (3), Alexander (4)

Coaches Poll: Tusky Valley (3), Newark Catholic (5), Westfall (7), Alexander (N/R)

The new guard will meet the old guard at Logan Middle School when Tuscarawas Valley meets Newark Catholic. Tusky Valley, a relative newcomer to state tourney action, has become a regular at the Nutter Center, making five trips in the past six years. With Huron out of the title picture, the Trojans have a golden opportunity to notch their first title.

But to get to state they must get past a rejuvenated Newark Catholic who went 21-1 in the regular season against a difficult schedule. This semifinal match could be one of the best matches in the entire state tournament.

Newark Catholic, whose last appearance was in 1999, was a state finalist regular from 1979 through 1989. During that period the Green Wave won seven titles making them the most prolific state champion in Ohio volleyball history.

The Green Wave had already bagged four titles before the kids playing today were born.

But Newark Catholic’s days as the state championship leader may be numbered. That’s because Cincinnati St. Ursula, who won their first title in 1993, is favored to win number eight this time around.

Of course, Newark Catholic can win a title of their own, and assure themselves of at least continuing to share the lead.

Tusky and Newask each have one loss to Division II teams who are also in regionals. The Trojans fell to West Holmes, the Green Wave to Mogadore Field.

Newark Catholic has wins over Clay, Toledo Central Catholic, Bellevue and DeSales. The Trojans’ victims include Claymont, Carrollton, Buckeye Trail and Garaway.

Westfall’s biggest win came over Benjamin Logan 16-14, 15-13 in the Elgin Classic, where they also clobbered host Elgin. Prior to that they had knocked off  Jonathan Alder. Westfall split matches with Unioto and lost to Frankfort Adena twice (7-15, 11-15 and 5-15, 15-10, 12-15).

Alexander has scored wins over Reedsville Eastern and Maysville. They lost two three game battles to Nelsonville-York, but got revenge in districts 5-15, 15-5, 15-13.

Wilmington Regional (Region 12)

Middletown Bishop Fenwick (19-6) vs. Versailles (19-6)

Anna vs. Johnstown Northridge

Regional Rankings: Versailles (1), Bishop Fenwick (2), Anna (3), Northridge (4)

Coaches Poll: Versailles (N/R), Bishop Fenwick (N/R), Anna (N/R), Northridge (N/R)

Versailles gets the nod at Wilmington based on the strength of their schedule. They beat Fort Recovery, Coldwater, Parkway and Fairlawn. They’ve lost five matches to league teams and also to Russia. Versailles beat Brookville and Clinton-Massie in the district.

Fenwick split with Springboro and lost to Dayton Carroll.

Anna had a lot of losses to strong opponents, and many were close. They racked up 55 points in two game losses to Fort Recovery and Sidney Lehman.

Northridge beat Bloom-Carroll and Pleasant to win the district. Most of their scores are unavailable.

Division IV

Hudson Regional (Region 13)

Windham (24-1) vs. Norwalk St. Paul (20-5)

Kidron Central Christian (24-1) vs. Ashtabula Sts. John & Paul (20-3)

Regional Rankings: Kidron Central Christian (1), Norwalk St. Paul (2), Windham (3), Ashtabula (4)

Coaches Poll: Kidron Central Christian (5), Windham (6), Norwalk St. Paul (13), Ashtabula (N/R)

The teams in this regional play different schedules, which makes for difficult comparisons. Kidron beat Windham 15-6, 15-7 late in the season so that makes it easy to pick them. (But it doesn’t mean they will win a rematch). Kidron’s only loss is to West Holmes.

St. Paul has lost to some toughies like Huron Sidney Lehman and Amherst Steele. They split with Monroeville and Collins Western Reserve. And they beat the likes of Clyde, Defiance and Convoy Crestview.

Windham won every match except for Kidron. Their most impressive victory was probably over Mogadore Field, who is still alive in Division II.

Ashtabula topped Bedford St. Peter Chanel 15-13, 9-15, 15-12 to win the district. One of their losses was to Regina.

Elida Regional (Region 14)

Ayersville (24-1) vs. Leipsic (15-8)

Fort Jennings (16-9) vs. Northwood (18-7)

Regional Rankings: Ayersville (1), Northwood (2), Leipsic (3), Fort Jennings (4)

Coaches Poll: Ayersville (8), Northwood (N/R), Leipsic (N/R), Fort Jennings (N/R)

This region is one of those where you make a mental coin toss and hope for the best. Ayersville gets picked over Leipsic based upon the match between the two on October 13. Ayersville won that one 15-12, 7-15, 16-14 and that’s not very definitive. Ayersville has by far the best record of anyone in the region but the other teams had stronger schedules.

Leipsic gets a nod over Fort Jennings because they beat them. But Leipsic lost three game squeakers to Pandora-Gilboa and Kalida and Fort Jennings beat those teams. Both teams lost to Ottoville, with Fort Jennings narrowly avenging their loss in district 3-15, 15-11, 17-15.

We could analyze more results but the guesswork would remain.

Northwood provides a further complication, because they ran up a lot of losses but played the toughest schedule. Many of their scores are not available. In their Invitational they were clobbered by Genoa but played Margaretta close. The Rangers split with Cardinal Stritch. In an impressive district final performance they avenged an early season loss to Old Fort.

However this regional comes out it won’t be a surprise.

Lancaster Regional (Region 15)

Wellsville (25-1) vs. Centerburg (25-1)

Frankfort Adena (25-0) vs. Reedsville Eastern (20-3)

Regional Rankings: Centerburg (1), Frankfort Adena (2), Wellsville (3), Reedsville Eastern (4)

Coaches Poll: Centerburg (2), Frankfort Adena (3), Wellsville (12), Reedsville Eastern (N/R)

Centerburg versus Adena in the regional final could be one to remember.

Centerburg looks as strong as they were last year when they took Marion Local to three at State, maybe even stronger. Amy Stevens is virtually unstoppable at times. The Trojans beat Westerville South and Big Walnut in a tri-match at the end of the season before bowing to Division I Central power Watterson in the final. In another tournament they scored decisive victories over Dublin Coffman and Hilliard Davidson. They also beat Marion Pleasant.

Adena set a school record for regular season wins this year and some say the Warriors have heir strongest team ever, or at least since the Cindy Noble team that won the state back in 1976. They have their starting lineup back from last year when they suffered a disappointing 15-12, 16-14 loss to Coshocton in the Division III regional semifinal.

Adena beat Westfall twice this year. That’s the same Westfall who won Marion Elgin’s tournament with an upset win over Benjamin Logan. The Warriors also beat Unioto twice. Both of those opponents are, by the way, still playing volleyball this week.

Wellsville could pose a challenge. Their only loss is to Columbiana Crestview, and Wellsville beat Columbiana who knocked Crestview out in a district final last Saturday. Wellsville looks at least as strong as last year when Centerburg beat them in a regional final 15-10, 15-7.

Reedsville Eastern knocked off Beaver Eastern to get here. They have lost to Nelsonville-York twice and to Alexander.

Vandalia-Butler Regional (Region 16)

Jackson Center (18-8) vs. Sidney Lehman (20-6)

St. Henry (24-1) vs. Russia (20-3)

Regional Rankings: St. Henry (1), Sidney Lehman (2), Russia (3), Jackson Center (4)

Coaches Poll: St. Henry (1), Sidney Lehman (9), Russia (16), Jackson Center (N/R)

St. Henry is the obvious pick here. The Redskins are ranked first in the state, with their lone defeat coming at the hands of Cincinnati St. Ursula. That was in the Toledo St. Ursula Invitational where they finished third with wins over Elyria and Mansfield Madison. The Redskins went undefeated in what many consider to be the strongest small school league in the state, beating Minster, Ft. Recovery, Marion Local, plus Versailles and Rockford Parkway, Division III teams who are still alive in the tournament.

St. Henry also has wins over Sidney Lehman, Piqua, Chaminade-Julienne, Old Fort and Northwood.

Sidney Lehman has six losses but those are against strong opponents like Mentor, Chaminade-Julienne, Vandalia-Butler, and Indiana power Fort Wayne Concordia. They split with Marion Local. Other notable wins include: Piqua, Anna (22-20, 15-10), Norwalk St. Paul, Springfield Shawnee, Celina and Parkway.

Russia’s three losses came early. The Raiders finished the season unranked but beat Versailles and Marion Local (15-6, 7-15, 15-13) who were ranked. Russia avenged losses to Jackson Center and Fairlawn. They beat Fairlawn a second time in the district. Their other loss was to New Bremen.

Most of Jackson Center’s record is unavailable. They nipped Houston 15-12, 13-15, 15-11 in the district semifinal to get to Vandalia, and Russia beat Houston twice in close matches.
