Oct. 21 - Margaretta stunned defending Division III State Champion Huron tonight 15-11, 9-15, 16-14. Huron led 14-12 when sophomore middle hitter Micki Kuns rotated to the front row and led Margaretta's final charge. The win ended two seasons of frustration for the Polar Bears, who lost in a 2001 district semifinal to Huron 15-10, 12-15, 16-14, and again last year. Huron, who reached the State Final Four the past four years in a row, had won the last seven matches in this intense but friendly rivalry. Margaretta will now face Mohawk, a 15-5, 13-15, 15-3 winner over Ontario, for the district title on Saturday.

Old Fort, who narrowly averted a disaster in sectionals against Hopewell-Loudon, advanced to a district final showdown with Northwood by beating Fremont St. Joseph 16-14, 15-5. Northwood topped Gibsonburg 15-10, 15-10.

St. Henry advanced to the district final for the first time since 1999 with a 15-11, 15-5 win over Marion Local. The Flyers had ousted St. Henry in each of the last three years. They reached the district this time by surprising fourth ranked Minster in a sectional final on Saturday.

Perrysburg and Bowling Green will meet for the third time this year, this time in a district final. They beat Findlay and Mansfield Madison, respectively, in identical 15-9, 15-9 scores. (See story in the Findlay Courier).

Lake Catholic got past Lakeview 15-10, 13-15, 15-9 to set up a showdown third match with Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. During the regular season Lake Catholic outscored NDCL 76-75, as the teams split two three game league matches and tied for the North Coast Conference title.

Ottawa-Glandorf got eleven kills from Shelly Bellman and toppled Celina 9-15, 15-9, 15-2. They will meet Maumee on Saturday in what promises to be an interesting matchup. Maumee advanced by beating Holland Springfield 15-4, 6-15, 15-2.

West Holmes won their fifth consecutive district championship by beating Claymont 15-10, 15-3. Claymont's Heather Wright led the Mustangs to a 10-7 first game lead. But the hitting of Mandy Humphrey and Tristen Dye proved to be too much as the Knights scored 23 of the match's final 26 points. Trisha Uhl served the final eight points of game one and hit two aces to start game two for West Holmes.
