Sectional/District News - 2006 10/31/06 - Saints recall former coach after big win (The Times-Reporter, by Jeffery Williams) Last week’s districts went pretty much as expected, with a few notable anomalies. The biggest surprise was Columbus Academy, an all-boy football power prior to 1991. The 15-11 Vikings, who were competitive against bigger Mid-State League opponents like Heath and Granville, toppled Shekinah Christian and Newark Catholic, each in three, to advance to their first regional. Academy is led by seniors Sylvia Fallon, Annie Carruthers and Katie Ricart. Their next opponent will be Tuscarawas Central Catholic, which also advanced to their first regional. Meanwhile, my post season Division I pick for state champion went up in flames, when defending champion Seton upended McAuley. That really wasn’t a big surprise considering both are GGCL schools, but Seton was only 1-9 in the league, while the 6-4 Mohawks had won eleven straight matches, even downing Mother of Mercy and Mt. Notre Dame, and they’d taken two tough four game matches from the Saints. And then there's Archbishop McNicholas, a smaller GGCL school with a 7-15 regular season record. The Rockets defeated 17-2 Clermont Northeastern, 21-1 Cincinnati Wyoming and 19-3 Bellbrook to win their third straight district title. During the regular season, tellingly, McNicholas handed Tipp City Tippecanoe one of their two losses, and they split with Roger Bacon. Speaking of which, the defending Division II champion Spartans outlasted Tippecanoe in what may have been the longest district final 20-25, 24-26, 25-22, 26-24, 21-19. Close matches were the order of the day in the Coldwater District where New Knoxville defeated Convoy Crestview in the final 25-14, 22-25, 25-9, 25-21. In a district in which six of ten contests went five games, the most “lopsided” result was New Knoxville’s 30-28, 25-21, 25-22 struggle over Fort Recovery. That district also saw the only number one team fall (so far) as St. Henry avenged a previous loss to Marion Local. Of course, New Knoxville then proceeded to avenge their league loss to St. Henry! Another number one that almost didn’t make it was Mother of Mercy, which barely survived a sectional challenge from Cincinnati St. Ursula 27-25, 28-26, 30-28. Meanwhile, Toledo St. Ursula even more barely avoided another shocker at the hands of Toledo Notre Dame Academy, which had won an 18-25, 27-25, 29-27, 18-25, 15-5 encounter in late September, and in so doing ended the Arrows 81-match conference win streak. On Saturday the Eagles were 2-up on their way to ending St. Ursula’s six year run at state, but the Arrows rallied for a 23-25, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 15-13 victory. Perrysburg had the last laugh in the Northern Lakes League. The Yellow Jackets missed a golden opportunity to grab a piece of their league title by losing twice to Bowling Green and splitting with Sylvania Northview, while with only two losses apiece, Northview and Bee Gee ended as co-champions. But Perrysburg is the only one playing this week, having knocked off Holland Springfield and Mansfield Madison at district. Springfield beat favored Findlay in five in sectionals. Northview was ousted in sectionals by Toledo Central Catholic, while Bowling Green lost a district final to Celina, both five game marathons. The Division II Canton South district saw close matches, especially Wooster Triway which squeezed past Alliance 22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 17-15 in the semifinal, but was upended by Canal Fulton Northwest in the final 25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-20. In Division III, 23-2 Reading, whose only losses are to Wyoming, eased past 23-2 Jamestown Greeneview 15-25, 25-22, 29-27, 23-25, 17-15 in the district final. The Blue Devils’ next opponent is Anna, which hasn’t been pushed to the limit yet, despite playing the likes of Lehman Catholic, Fairlawn, Fort Loramie and Jackson Center twice each, Frankfort Adena, Hopewell-Loudon and Marion Catholic. Up north, Huron held second seeded Margaretta to just 35 points, then trounced Mohawk to advance to a regional encounter with Coldwater. 10/28/06 - Mercy, Lakota West head to regional semis (Cincinnati Enquirer, by Jeff Wallner) Area volleyball teams fall at districts (Dayton Daily News, by Ron Jackson) EC falls short against talented VASJ team (Cleveland Plain Dealer, by Bob Fortuna) Toledo Christian advances, Stritch falls (Toledo Blade, by Steve Junga) St. Ursula rallies to win (Toledo Blade, by Steve Junga) 10/27/06 - In Division III, Smithville, which has had difficulty getting out of the district even though they host the tournament, defeated Orrville last night to advance to regionals. They will meet the winner of Saturday's final between Villa Angela-St. Joseph and Elyria Catholic. The undefeated fourth ranked Smithies were led offensively by seniors Ashley Brown and Lori Ickes, and freshman Jenna Pew. Sophomore libero Leah Martin had 22 digs. Orville had dispatched 11th ranked West Salem Northwestern on Tuesday. They were led by freshmen Hannah Brenner and Erin Short in that match. Villa Angela-St. Joseph struggled to beat upstart Independence on Wednesday 26-24, 25-18, 27-25. The Blue Devils, who start three juniors, two sophomores and two frosh, put on a dazzling defensive show, forcing the taller defending state champion Vikings into long volleys. Junior setter Megan Osysko led the offense for Independence, which fought tooth and nail in game three. Freshman outside Alexa DeFranco, who can flat out dig, spiked a kill to tie things at 25, before Viking outside Hailey Martin smashed two kills to end it. Besides Martin the Vikings were led by setter Colleen Lynch, and hitters Hannah Groudle and Margo Amigoni. Elyria Catholic took a tough three game 25-21, 25-20, 25-21 decision from Lutheran West with senior swim star and setter Paige Samek deftly guiding the offense. Trailing 18-8 in game three, West put on a charge and crept to 22-20 behind the hitting of Colleen Welker and Katy Thomay, and the passing of libero Stacey Hruska who makes digging seem a lot easier than it is. However, sophomore Megan Hanson singed the left side with two kills to clinch the match for the Panthers. Libero Caitlin Kelly set up the final point with a great pass of what could have been a tying spike by West. In Division I northeast finals, Wadsworth defeated Wooster to avenge last year's district loss to the Generals. Pacing Wadsworth were: Marie Mueller, 19 kills, Emily McMillan 41 assists; Aimey Reynolds, 23 digs, and Jen Uhl, 7 blocks. In other finals, it was Stow over Hudson and Mentor beating Painesville Riverside. Solon will play Brecksville-Broadview Heights on Saturday. To the northwest, Elyria topped Amherst Steele to advance to regionals, while Magnificat stopped Strongsville, which on Tuesday had beaten North Royalton. In district semifinals, Toledo St. Ursula knocked off Toledo Central Catholic and will now face Toledo Notre Dame Academy in the final. Notre Dame stunned St. Ursula a month and ended their 81 match Toledo City League win streak. Down in Central District, Watterson and Westerville South advanced with wins over Marysville and Pickerington North, respectively, and will face each other on Saturday. In other other Saturday finals, Newark will play Hilliard Davidson and Gahanna-Lincoln will meet Thomas Worthington. Davidson upended Dublin Scioto on Tuesday 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 23-25, 15-7, their second five game win over the Irish. Lake Catholic gained revenge for last season's district loss to Jefferson Area with a 20-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-22 victory. The Cougars move on to a Wednesday regional semifinal with Olmsted Falls which ousted Fairview 25-22, 25-22, 25-20. Unbeaten Salem and top ranked West Holmes advanced to a showdown with wins over Hubbard and Padua Franciscan, respectively. Canal Fulton Northwest nipped Wooster Triway 25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-22, led by Tricia Budrow with 16 kills and 12 digs, Lindsey Green with 41 assists and the blocking of Natalie Ogg and freshman Dakota Harkins. Stephanie Lawson had 22 kills for Triway. Tiffin Columbian and Clyde won district semifinals beating Willard and Bellevue, respectively. The Lady Tigers upped their record to 25-0 with the 25-23, 21-25, 25-14, 29-27 win, and will face Bishop Fenwick in a District Final Saturday. Top ranked Anna won easily over Brookville. Fort Recovery was outscored, but managed to squeak by New Bremen 14-25, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 17-15. The Indians will face New Knoxville in a Division IV District semifinal on Tuesday, following a match between St. Henry and Marion Local. All four teams are ranked in what should be a great night of volleyball to be played, ironically, at New Bremen. Jackson Center, Sidney Fairlawn, Sidney Lehman and Fort Loramie all advanced.
