Sectional/District News - 2007 10/31/07 - Toledo Central Catholic downs Ottawa-Glandorf for first trip to regional since 1999 10/30/07 - Lima Central Catholic returns to regional with 22nd win in a row Notre Dame Academy beats Toledo St. Ursula third straight time to win first district crown 10/28/07 - District champions from yesterday: Div. I: Solon, Bishop Watterson, Dublin Coffman, Dublin Scioto, Toledo Notre Dame Academy, Bowling Green, Cincinnati St. Ursula, Cincinnati Ursuline, Vandalia-Butler, Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame Div. II: Toledo Central Catholic, Celina, Unioto, Bexley, Bishop Hartley, Tipp City Tippecanoe, Bellbrook, Archbishop McNicholas Div. III: St. Henry, Hebron Lakewood, Heath, Lima Central Catholic, Roger Bacon, Anna Div. IV: Jackson Center, Edon, Leipsic, Hopewell-Loudon, Fisher Catholic, Newark Catholic, Kidron Central Christian, Twin Valley South 10/26/07 - In their third head-to-head matchup of the year, Amherst Steele's stellar defense prevailed as they defeated Olmsted Falls 24-26, 25-21, 31-29, 25-18, for their first district title since 2003. Amherst will play the winner of Toledo St. Ursula-Toledo Notre Dame Academy next Wednesday at Norwalk. Two Wayne County teams captured first ever district titles last night. West Salem Northwestern rolled past Orrville in three behind 23 kills from Kara Koch. And Wooster Triway downed top seed Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary 25-21, 25-23, 25-23. Triway was ranked third in the state on September 9, but fell out of the top twenty after several losses caused by key injuries. Setting star Allison Kearney missed half the season, but she's back and so are the Titans. Kearney led with 34 assists. In Central, Bishop Watterson and Worthington moved on to a D-I district final. Bishop Hartley and Canal Winchester advanced in D-II, as did Heath and Marion Pleasant in D-III. And talk about momentum shifts. Shekinah Christian, which had lost in five to unbeaten Madison Christian, rallied to beat the Eagles 20-25, 12-25, 25-16, 25-15, 15-8. As a result, the Flames will finally get to play Fisher Catholic, which also won, in the district final. The two were to have met in a tri-match at Kidron Central Christian on October 13, but could not because one of them had overscheduled their 22 match allotment. In district finals in the northeast, Wooster tripped up Uniontown Lake, Hubbard downed Lake Catholic in a 15-12 tiebreaker, and Padua Franciscan won in three. Berlin Hiland, which lost twice in league play to Tuscarawas Central Catholic, spotted the Saints game one, then rallied for a 18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 win. District volleyball: Amherst digs deep, downs Olmsted Falls for first title since 2003 (102607, Elyria Chronicle-Telegram, by Tim Gebhardt) 10/25/07 - Avon Lake's brief Cinderella tournament season came to an end Tuesday. The Shoregals, who upended defending district champ Elyria last week, lost to conference foe Olmsted Falls in straight sets. Southwestern conference co-champs Falls and Amherst Steele will meet in the district final tonight. Amherst defeated a tough Medina team in 3 close games to reach the district finals. 0/25/07 - Olentangy Liberty downed 14th ranked Pickerington North last night 23-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-21 in Central tournament action. The Patriots will face Dublin Coffman, a winner over Gahanna, for the district crown on Saturday. Coffman downed Liberty in four in early September. Frosh-laden Westfall needs one more win to advance to yet another regional. The Mustangs defeated Trimble and will play Wheelersburg for their D-III district crown. Also advancing in D-III were Centerburg and Hebron Lakewood. D-II semifinal winners included Circleville, Unioto, Big Walnut and Bexley, as well as top ranked Salem which advanced to the regional with a win over Mogadore Field. In D-II on Tuesday, Walsh Jesuit knocked off Beaumont. They will face Kenston tonight for one district crown, Lake Catholic and Hubbard will play for another, and neighboring schools Parma Padua Franciscan and Parma Heights Holy Name will go west to LaGrange to meet for their district's title. 10/24/07 - State tournament action on Tuesday. D-I Dublin Scioto and Hilliard Davidson recorded impressive three set wins over Westerville South and Newark, respectively, to advance to a district final rematch. Davidson beat Scioto in five a month ago and in last season's district semifinal. Toledo St. Ursula downed Sylvania Southview and Notre Dame Academy beat back pesky Toledo Bowsher, both in four, while Bowling Green held off Anthony Wayne in game three 26-24 to win in straight sets. D-II Ottawa-Glandorf and Toledo Central Catholic advanced to one district final with wins over Napoleon and Eastwood, respectively. Celina also advanced and will face Lima Bath, which knocked off Tiffin Columbian, in the other. In another area of the state but the northwest volleyball region, Wooster Triway took a hard fought three game match over Minerva 25-17, 28-26, 25-23. Setter Allison Kearney paced the Titans with 32 assists. D-III - Northwestern knocked off Creston Norwayne for the third time this season 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17. The Huskies were led by Kara Koch and Kristen Warner, with 32 and 18 kills, respectively. They will face Orrville, which ousted Smithville. St. Henry avenged one of its losses with by beating Coldwater. Despite an uncharacteristic 9-15 record, the Redskins find themselves in a familiar setting – a district final. D-IV Berlin Hiland nipped Beallsville 23-25, 25-13, 19-25, 25-19, 15-12. The 20-4 Hawks will face Tuscarawas Central Catholic for a trip to the regional. Central was responsible for two of their losses. In the northwest, Delphos St. John’s nipped Convoy Crestview 25-22, 23-25, 26-24, 25-22, while Leipsic topped Ayersville 18-25, 27-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-6. Top ranked Marion Local survived the New Bremen Sectional, something they didn’t do last year when they were also top ranked. The Flyers beat New Bremen 25-20, 31-33, 25-17, 25-17. Hopewell-Loudon topped New Riegel for the second time in three weeks. 10/21/07 - If you're looking for great high school volleyball with parity, it won't get any better than the GGCL Scarlet. Ursuline (3-7), which lost to Seton (3-7) just over two weeks ago, and then beat third ranked Mt. Notre Dame to knock them out of a tie for the conference title, won a dramatic sectional final over Seton yesterday 15-25, 26-28, 25-22, 26-24, 17-15. St. Ursula, which finished last in the Scarlet at 2-8, displayed the league's strength with a 25-16, 25-14, 25-17 win over 20-4 Oak Hills. The Highlanders other losses also came at the hands of GGCL members Mother of Mercy, Mt. Notre Dame and Seton. New Riegel nipped Mohawk 25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 17-25, 16-14 in their sectional final and will now face Hopewell-Loudon at district. Sidney Fairlawn toppled fourth ranked South Charleston Southeastern in straight sets.
