Wilmington - Division II Semifinals

The scores don't indicate a tight match between Chaminade-Julienne Bacon, but it was an extremely high quality and exciting match. Both teams played well, with plenty of long rallies, super defense and terminal attacks. There were 3 big momentum swings in this match.

Roger Bacon started with a few errors as CJ took a 3-2 lead. Roger Bacon gained the momentum to spurt to a 8-3 lead behind a few Emily Withers jump serves before CJ called their first timeout. Roger Bacon was really clicking and looked to coast as CJ called their 2nd timeout at 13-4. This started the 2nd momentum swing, as CJ come back with some excellent ball control and several major cranks from MB Stephanie Ross. CJ brought the score back to
14-11 before succumbing 15-11.

Chaminade continued their hot streak to start game 2 as they ran to a 6-1 lead. It sure looked like we would be playing 3 games at this point. After a timeout, the 3rd momentum swing started as Roger Bacon brought themselves back to even at 6-6 and 8-8. Brittany Holden was excellent during this stretch.

A weird occurrence happened to delay the match about 40 minutes as Roger Bacon led 10-8. The referee slumped over at the net, collapsing on his leg. He seemed very pale and looked to faint while still up on the platform. Several people helped him from the stand and it was a long time before the squad arrived to take him. Apparently he had a hip going out of joint or a collapse of his ACL. Back to the match, the teams were given 10 minutes of warmups. Roger Bacon continued their strong play, as CJ made a few hitting errors, and the final score was 15-9. This kind of match is why volleyball is such a great game to watch.

Kettering Alter did not look as sharp in beating an overmatched Athens squad. Carrie DeMange and Jenna Miller had some incredible spikes, and Ali Hausfeld looked smooth spreading the ball around, but they did not play the kind of defense or display the ball control that will be needed against Roger Bacon. Hopefully they will give us a match to remember in the Regional Final.
