Week 9 Highlights

State Tournament - District/Regional Results (updated through Saturday, October 26).

Oct. 26 - District Finals - Southwest - Kettering Alter stifled Ben Logan 15-5, 15-4, led by Carrie DeMange (12 kills), Ali Hausfeld (20 assists) and Amy Wetterau (4 service aces). Chaminade-Julienne overcame illnesses and a 0-7 first game deficit to beat Purcell-Marian 15-12, 15-9. Roger Bacon and Sidney Lehman romped to wins. North College Hill topped Williamsburg 15-12, 7-15, 15-11, and will play Jonathan Alder in a battle of unbeatens in the Regional. Versailles topped Reading 15-9, 15-11. Cinderella Botkins won their District to go 10-14, and will now face Marion Local in the Regional. Jackson Center and Fort Loramie, who shared their league title, both won and will square off against each other in the Regional.

Central - Watterson and Dublin Coffman had hard-fought victories over Hilliard Darby 15-10-12-15, 15-9 and Westland 11-15, 15-10, 15-11, respectively while Lancaster rolled over Gahanna 15-3, 15-6. Big Walnut struggled to beat Granville 15-12, 15-17, 15-10, and Canal Winchester stopped Bishop Hartley 15-4, 15-11. Fredericktown and Jonathan Alder had close calls. The Freddies, led by Shena Beheler, beat Pleasant 15-10, 16-14, but had lots of trouble with Pleasant's short set combo, setter Rachel Bennett and middle hitter Erin Kume (both are sophomores). The Pioneers outlasted Ridgedale 15-13, 16-14. In Div IV, Centerburg advanced over Newark Catholic 15-10, 15-8.

Northeast - Solon tops Brecksville 15-13, 17-15, led by Emily Lucci (6 blocks, 18 digs, 7 service points), Ashlee Hamilton (14 digs) and Rachael Osolin (21 assists).

Northwest - Jessica Schult, setter Karly Loomis, lead Eastwood rout of Maumee 15-4, 15-3. Norwalk beats Mansfield Madison for second time in two weeks, and Celina stops Defiance. Sarah Florian, Colleen Slattery, and Kelsey Hills combine for 24 kills to lead St. Ursula over Central Catholic 15-3, 15-10. Huron hammers Wynford 15-3, 15-5. Archbold and Genoa win. Kalida, Riverdale, Old Fort and Pettisville advance in Div IV.

South and East - Scioto Valley Conference champion Adena romps, while league runnerup Westfall wins hard-fought struggle over Wheelersburg 16-14, 15-11.

Oct. 24 - District Finals - Elyria nipped Amherst Steele 15-13, 15-13 for their eighth District title in nine years. Magnificat and Mentor won. Kenston surprised Walsh Jesuit 12-15, 15-8, 17-15, and Canal Fulton Northwest toppled Orrville 15-10, 16-14. Hubbard beat Salem, but had a close game, 15-5, 16-14. Smithville, Lutheran West and Streetsboro all won in three and all had close calls in one game. Tallmadge and Windham also won.

In the Southwest, Mother of Mercy beat Piqua 10-15, 15-6, 15-8, and Ursuline topped Centerville 15-4, 15-12. Those two will join Seton and Mount Notre Dame in an all-GGCL regional at Vandalia-Butler. GGCL champion Cin. St. Ursula also won and is headed to Hilliard for a likely showdown with Lancaster. In all, five of the six GGCL Division I teams made regionals, with McAuley losing to Mother of Mercy in Sectionals.

In Central District, Westland got by DeSales 15-11, 13-15, 15-11, and Dublin Coffman and Gahanna also won. In the East, Wellsville topped Berlin Hiland 15-7, 11-15, 15-6.

District Semifinals - Jonathan Alder got over a first game scare from Fairbanks 15-13, 15-3, and will play Ridgedale in the final. Newark Catholic beat Fisher Catholic 15-11, 15-12. Beaver Eastern, Eastern Meigs, Centerburg, Canal Winchester, Hartley, Scioto Northwest, Wheelersburg, Westfall and Athens all advanced.

Oct. 23 - District Finals - Austintown-Fitch finally beat Youngstown Boardman after two regular season losses, 14-16, 15-8, 15-11. Wooster advanced to the regional by nipping GlenOak 17-15, 15-11. Katie Tobiasz and Stephanie Stenzel led Rocky River over Fairview 15-4, 15-4. Mount Notre Dame beat Mason 15-7, 15-5, while Seton avenged a regular season home loss to Vandalia-Butler 15-11, 15-7. Ashtabula Sts. John & Paul beat Gilmour 15-9, 15-12.

District Semifinals - In Central District, Hilliard Darby ousted Mt. Vernon 15-13, 15-10, Granville nipped Watkins Memorial 12-15, 15-5, 15-13, Pleasant stopped Highland 15-11, 2-15, 15-7, and Watterson, Lancaster, Big Walnut, and Fredericktown won. Nelsonville-York squeaked past New Lexington 14-16, 15-13, 15-11, and will face unbeaten Adena, a 15-0, 15-3 winner over Portsmouth, in the final. Solon, Brecksville, Kidron Central, Girard, South Webster and Cuyahoga Heights were also winners.
