Anna defeats Versailles in D-III regional tournament (Dayton Daily News)

The Wilmington Regional lived up to its rugged billing as Anna and Bloom-Carroll both won in five.

Anna nipped Versailles in a very exciting match 22-25, 25-21, 28-30, 25-20, 17-15. The Rockets were down 17-11 in game two and rallied to win. They were down 16-9 in game three and almost won another comeback, having multiple game points before losing 30-28. Game five was seesaw to 10. Anna pulled ahead 14-12, but Justine Raterman scored a kill for the Tigers who then tied it on a block and went up 15-14. Anna scored the last three.

Bloom-Carroll defeated Hamilton Badin 18-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-11, 15-8.

11/02/05 - Alter faces familiar foe in volleyball semifinal (Dayton Daily News, by Debbie Juniewicz)

11/01/05 - Arrows fly to volleyball regionals (The Toledo Blade)

11/01/05 - West Holmes will play in their seventh consecutive regional semi-final this Thursday at Wooster. The Knights are shooting for their fifth straight state appearance in Division II, and sixth in the past seven years. Their opponent will be Copley, which is going for a second straight state appearance. Needless to say, these teams were in different regions last year.

What do Hamilton Badin and Rockford Parkway have in common? Well, at least four things. They both made the regional. They both started the state tournament with losing records. They play brutal schedules. And they are both Division III schools.

Badin will take on top ranked and unbeaten Bloom-Carroll tomorrow in what could be an interesting match. Meanwhile, Parkway will tackle Centerburg.

It's a long shot but should these two teams keep winning they would meet in the state final.

Unbeaten Toledo St. Ursula has their work cut out for them in their quest for a second consecutive unbeaten season. The Arrows play Magnificat on Wednesday, and may have to face Elyria, Mount Notre Dame and Seton to repeat. Magnificat beat Seton early in the year and Elyria had St. Ursula on the ropes in their own Best of Ohio tournament.

The Division IV state final could see two unbeatens go at it in Sidney Lehman Catholic and Newark Catholic. But pitfalls abound. Lehman's region includes Marion Local, which is peaking at the right time. Newark Catholic has to deal with Frankfort Adena, who has just been blowing teams out of late.

Come to think of it, Lehman has been peaking all season and the Green Wave have been blowing people out all year.

And then there is Roger Bacon!

10/31/05 - Eighth ranked Marion Local defeated three higher ranked teams last week, and that was just to get out of their district!!. And they racked up some amazing stats against Convoy Crestview in last Saturday's district final. For starters, the Flyers had 134 team digs. They also set two school records: sophomore hitter Abby Niekamp recorded 23 kills, and senior setter Maria Moeller had 26 digs. (Moeller also had 52 assists). See Marion Local.

10/30/05 - In Central District action Watterson rallied to nose out Hilliard Davidson in one district championship 20-25, 23-25, 27-25, 25-14, 15-10. Thomas Worthington and Westerville South also won trips to the Hilliard regional.

In a D-II nail biter, Hartley survived a rally by Canal Winchester 25-22, 25-8, 23-25, 20-25, 16-14. Big Walnut will join Hartley at the Ontario regional. In other divisions, Bloom-Carroll defeated Jonathan Alder, Centerburg beat Marion Elgin and Newark Catholic downed Shekinah Christian.

Cincinnati schools dominated in D-I in the southwest as McAuley squeaked past Cincinnati St. Ursula 28-30, 25-20, 16-25, 25-16, 18-16; Seton took Vandalia-Butler; Mt. Notre Dame beat Kettering Fairmont; Lakota West downed Chaminade-Julienne; and, Mercy topped Piqua. Mt. Notre Dame will go to Hilliard, the others to Vandalia.

For the second straight time, Hamilton Badin (12-14) defeated a top seed. This time seventh rated Greeneview (22-2) was the victim in a 25-23, 26-24, 25-23 squeaker. The Rams next opponent will be undefeated and top ranked Bloom-Carroll in the Wilmington regional. Versailles and Anna will meet in the other bracket.

Sidney Fairlawn toppled Fort Loramie in D-IV. Sidney Lehman and Jackson Center also advanced.

In the northwest, Toledo St. Ursula once again escaped an upset at the hands of Toledo Central Catholic, this time by a 26-24, 21-25, 21-25, 25-12, 15-12 margin. Clay defeated Marion Harding.

Old Fort toppled undefeated Toledo Christian 25-18, 22-25, 25-17, 25-17.

Solon advanced in the northeast over Maple Heights. Villa Angela-St. Joseph ended Elyria Catholic's run over seeded opponents. In D-IV Dalton outlasted Kidron Central Christian 25-23, 20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-9.

10/29/05 - Eighth ranked Marion Local defeated three higher ranked teams this week to win their district. The Flyers knocked off #7 St. Henry on Tuesday and #4 New Knoxville on Thursday. Today they toppled a Convoy Crestview team that fought to the end 25-17, 17-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-10. The Knights were led by Courtney Springer with 19 kills. Morgan Hicks had 21 assists and Jamie Perkins was stellar on defense.

In Division III, Rockford Parkway nosed out Swanton in today's District final 30-28, 25-23, 25-23. The Panthers beat Coldwater 17-25, 25-17, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7 to avenge a five game league loss. Margaretta won their district today over Mohawk. On Thursday the Polar Bears surprised Huron 25-21, 25-21, 25-18.

In a Division IV District final, Norwalk St. Paul knocked off Buckeye Central.

Last week, unseeded Elyria Catholic upset third seeded Trinity Wednesday evening 24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22. Paige Samek had 32 assists and 11 digs, Lindsay Fiore 14 kills, and Monica Harris 11 unassisted blocks. The Panthers beat #2 seed Lutheran West in sectionals.

Girard toppled unbeaten Columbiana Crestview 25-21, 27-25, 25-21.

Bloom-Carroll stopped Marion Pleasant (see link to article below). Meghan Simons led with 19 kills, 9 blocks, 6 aces and 16 digs, Ashley Hughes 35 assists and Casey Thomas 15 digs. Hughes, Sarah Kelly and Katie Kreutz combined for 43/43 serving. The Bulldog missed six serves all evening, four in the only game they won handily. Pleasant was even better at the line, committing only two errors.
