11/4/06 - Toledo St. Ursula knocks Elyria out……..again

Three Cincinnati schools advanced in Division I on Thursday. In Vandalia, Mt. Notre Dame knocked off Seton, which had upended McAuley last weekend, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-8. Ursuline got past a dangerous Lakota West 27-25, 21-25, 25-19, 25-23. West's three previous losses were to Mt. Notre Dame, and Ursuline, each in five with a two point tiebreak, and Mother of Mercy 25-22, 25-21.

Mother of Mercy traveled to Hilliard where they downed Central power Bishop Watterson 25-19, 25-12, 25-23. In the past seven seasons the Eagles have been knocked out of this regional by every member of the GGCL, losing to Mt. Notre Dame last season, Seton in '04, Ursuline in '03, St. Ursula in '02 and McAuley in 2000.

Gahanna-Lincoln eased past Hilliard Davidson 25-23, 25-23, 25-21. The Lions had also beaten Davidson in five their first match of the season.

Wadsworth and Solon are headed for a rematch after the Grizzlies topped Stow 25-17, 25-18, 25-21 and Solon defeated Mentor 25-18, 25-14, 25-19. Solon nipped Wadsworth at home in mid-September 20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12.

In Division III, top ranked Anna and second rated Versailles are headed for a showdown rematch between 27-0 teams. Anna nipped Versailles in last season's wild regional semifinal 22-25, 25-21, 28-30, 25-20, 17-15. The Rockets advanced by trouncing  Reading 25-12, 25-9, 25-13, while Versailles beat Caledonia River Valley 25-16, 25-12, 25-16.

Huron overcame a tough Coldwater squad with a 25-18, 25-20, 20-25, 25-21 win. The Tigers will face another opponent from west central Ohio, Lima Central Catholic, which ousted Central power Centerburg 25-16, 25-23, 25-18.

Unbeaten Albany Alexander ended Westfall's two year run at state 25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 25-20. They will try for their first state appearance against Tuscarawas Valley, which reached state five times between 1997-2002. Tusky Valley beat Coshocton 25-20, 25-17, 26-28, 25-8.

And defending state champ Villa Angela-St. Joseph kept on rolling by knocking Smithville from the ranks of the unbeaten 25-13, 25-20, 25-17. Gates Mills Gilmour beat Columbiana Crestview 17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 28-26.

Perrysburg def. Magnificat 25-22, 17-25, 25-21, 27-29, 15-13

11/2/06 - Toledo Christian advanced to their first ever regional final with a 25-23, 25-22, 25-23 win over Edon. The Eagles reached the regionals by winning Saturday's district final over 2005 regional champion Old Fort. They will face Kalida, who defeated Hardin Northern 25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-21, and is seeking its second state appearance in three years.

In the southeast, Tuscarawas Central Catholic ended Columbus Academy's run 25-19, 25-19, 26-28, 25-13. The Saints, hoping to reach state for the first time ever, now face a daunting challenge in second rated Frankfort Adena, which blasted Reedsville Eastern from the ranks of the unbeaten 25-6, 25-17, 25-9.

Adena won the first two state championships ever in 1975 and 1976, when they were led by 6'5" Cindy Noble-Hauserman, who later played on the 1984 U.S. Basketball Team that won Olympic gold. And while they won't have her this time, the Warriors reached the final four in 2004 with a roster that included six sophomores and two frosh. Senior setter Haley Holcomb and junior libero Casi Coy were starters on that team.

In the northeast, Norwalk St. Paul advanced over stubborn Cuyahoga Heights 25-13, 26-24, 25-22, while Ashtabula Sts. John & Paul nipped Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas 25-27, 25-10, 25-12, 20-25, 15-11.

Sidney Lehman Catholic made it back to the regional final by wearing down Fort Loramie 23-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23. The Cavaliers were led by Emilee Seger with 55 assists and sophomore Sarah Lynch with 22 kills. They will face an uphill struggle against battle tested New Knoxville, which downed Sidney Fairlawn 25-13, 25-12, 25-17.

In Division II, another regional final showdown between Archbishop Alter and Roger Bacon is in the offing. Alter seems the definite favorite based on records, but the last time these two met the Knights won by a narrow 28-26, 25-23, 25-23 count. Last night Alter downed McNicholas 25-13, 25-18, 25-22 while the Spartans took Washington Court House 25-7, 25-17, 25-20.

Warsaw River View remained unbeaten with a 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 win over Tallmadge in the Wooster regional. The Black Bears hope to return to the Nutter Center, but to do so they will need to claw their way past West Holmes, who was a regular at state from 2001-2004 but was knocked out by Copley in a regional semifinal last year. The Knights advanced by downing Canal Fulton Northwest 20-25, 25-18, 25-14, 25-12.

And up in the northeast, Katie Dull was sensational as Walsh Jesuit stopped undefeated Salem cold 25-12, 25-21, 25-10. The Warriors will face Olmsted Falls, which rallied over Lake Catholic 25-20, 16-25, 9-25, 25-17, 15-13. Walsh won a previous meeting 25-22, 25-17.
