Regular Season News - 2010 Antwerp middle hitter Taylor Vail recorded a school single match record 34 kills last week against Wayne Trace. The Archers wrapped up their third straight Green Meadows Conference this week. 10/15/10 - Toledo St. Ursula staved off a determined charge by Toledo Notre Dame Academy to win the City Series title for the 9th time in 11 years with a 23-25, 25-14, 25-18, 21-25, 15-8 win over the Eagles. Smithville beat Norwayne on Tuesday and captured its 20th Wayne County Athletic League title. Bowling Green downed Anthony Wayne last week, and with a win this Tuesday over Holland Springfield won its 7th straight Northern Lakes League crown. Maple Heights completed the first undefeated season in school history with a com from behind win on the road over Cleveland St. Joseph Academy 20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 15-11. Despite losing a game in league play for the first time this season, Frankfort Adena beat Unioto in four to wrap up its sixth straight 14-0 mark in the Scioto Valley Conference. 10/4/10 - Bishop Fenwick nips Archbishop Alter in GGCL Grey Division battle 10/3/10 - The Mayfield Wildcats (9-8) beat Akron Archbishop Hoban 25-21, 19-25, 25-19 in the championship game to win yesterday’s Mayfield Invitational at Mayfield High School. The Wildcats were led by tournament MVP junior setter Mikayla Zernic who posted 83 assists, 17 kills, 7 aces and 22 points for the tournament. Mayfield’s balanced attack featured senior Kayla Coffey with 23 kills, junior Amy Kole with 22 kills and junior Morgan McGrath with 22 kills. Mayfield has won seven out of their last nine matches. 10/2/10 - Kenston played two top-ranked unbeaten teams in today’s Northwest Ohio Invitational Tournament at Mentor High School. The Bombers, who were also unbeaten and are ranked eighth in Division II, upended Lake Catholic (#1 in D-II) 25-17, 20-25, 25-19 before dropping an 18-25, 25-27 decision to D-I top rated Cincinnati Ursuline Academy. Ursuline downed Mt. Notre Dame 25-17, 25-21, 25-18 on Thursday to open up a two game lead in the Girls’ Greater Cincinnati League. Earlier this year the Lions beat Central District power Dublin Coffman (see Ursuline highlights). Dublin Coffman won last weekend's Fall Classic for the second year in a row, beating host Cincinnati Mother of Mercy in the final. Mercy had beaten Division IV top ranked Marion Local in the semifinal. Marion Local topped Bishop Hartley for third place. Mercy may be coming on strong just in time for state. This week the Bobcats avenged earlier home losses to Mt. Notre Dame and St. Ursula with wins on the road. Also on Thursday, Division III top ranked Tuscarawas Valley, down two games to one and trailing 24-14 in game four, stunned Wooster Triway with two match-point averting rallies and stayed undefeated 25-22, 23-25, 25-27, 27-25, 16-14. Jordan Johnson served ten points in a row in game four and dished up three more in the Trojans' tiebreaker rally from 12-14. Minster celebrated three 1000-career milestones in nine days. Two came on Tuesday of last week when Ellen Gruber recorded her 1000th career assist and Bowling Green State University recruit Erica Fullenkamp pounded her 1000th career kill in a win over Fort Recovery. This Thursday, Fullenkamp dished up her 1000th assist as the Wildcats downed Rockford Parkway 25-18, 25-7, 25-7. Minster is 5-1 and tied for second in the Midwest Athletic Conference with Versailles. The Wildcats will host league leading Marion Local on October 7. 9/28/10 - Magnificat blocks its way to Varsity Volleyball Showcase title 9/23/10 - Cincinnati Mother of Mercy will hold its Fall Classic tournament this weekend. The powerhouse field includes several ranked teams: Marion Local, Magnificat, Dublin Coffman, Bishop Hartley, Findlay, and Mother of Mercy.
