St. Henry took a giant step toward winning the Mercer Auglaize County league last night in a 8-15, 17-15, 15-4 win over Marion Local, played before a crowd of over 700 at St. Henry High School. St. Henry brought the home crowd to its feet with a big rally in game two that saw them go from a 6-10 deficit to a 14-10 lead. Sarah Poling served all eight points in the rally.
Up to that point Marion seemed to have the match under control. They won the first game behind some great blocks from Ashley Langenkamp and Margo Moeller, and solid all-around play by Erin Puthoff. Marion jumped out to a 4-1 lead in game two, but St. Henry rallied to lead 6-4. However, Marion responded with six unanswered points on a service ace by Langenkamp, a block by Moeller, and two more service aces by Carrie Thobe.
Then things started to unravel for the Flyers as they made several errors. Meanwhile, St. Henry made some hitting adjustments to offset Marion's blockers, and Sarah Poling scored on several powerful kills.
The third game was all St. Henry after Marion took a brief 1-0 lead. Poling, along with Lindsey Hess, Kim Stahl and Lauren Stahl, led the onslaught, helped by Lori Bruns' setting and some great defense. Bruns even got a kill late in the game and served the final two points.
St. Henry can clinch the title outright if they beat St. John's tomorrow and New Bremen next Thursday. However, they won't have much time to celebrate. Both St. Henry and Marion Local are in the New Bremen Sectional, and that means one of them won't even get to the District Final. Which is unfortunate, because both of these teams are good enough to go far in the State.
