2004 Highlights

10/19/04 - HUNTINGTON VOLLEYBALL STUNS ADENA
Monday, October 18, 2004 at 9:06pm

The Huntington Huntsmen Volleyball Team beat Adena for the first time since 1989, in handing the Warriors a 25-23/18-25/26-24/25-21 setback Monday, which allows Westfall to win their first-ever undisputed SVC Championship. The Mustangs shared the title in 1999.

Huntington was an offensive and defensive juggernaut, which Adena did not have an answer for. Huntsmen junior Courtney Jenkins pounded 21 kills, while Tasha Zimmerman drilled 17. Julie Hammond added 9. Jenkins had 9 kills in Game 3, while Zimmerman took over in Game 4 with 7.

With both teams tied at one game each, Adena had a 24-22 lead in Game Three, only to see Huntington rally for the next four points and a 26-24 victory. Huntington trailed only a handfull of times in Game Four, but pulled away after getting a 21-20 lead enroute to a 25-21 win.

Adena was led by Katie Roush, Amanda Atchison, and Sara Smith with 13 kills each.

Huntington's (9-5) SVC record was not indicative of how they played Monday, as they probably put together their best performance of the season.

Adena's string of 14 straight SVC Championships ends with Westfall taking the outright title with a (13-1) mark.

9/24/04 - Adena ran its perfect streak to 10 with a three-game victory over Zane Trace Thursday, 25-12, 25-10, 25-11.
As a team, the Warriors piled up 11 aces -- four of them by Sara Smith, who added five kills, 11 digs and eight points. Amanda Atchison had 13 kills, five points and three solo blocks while Katie Roush got 11 kills, 14 points and 13 digs.
"We played aggressive," Adena coach Laura Smith said. "We were 77-for-85 hitting-wise, and we only missed on two of 72 serves."

9/22/04

Adena volleyball coach Laura Smith reached a personal milestone Tuesday after her Warriors beat Unioto 25-14, 22-25, 25-14, 25-14.

The victory marked Smith's 400th of her 20-year career -- all at Adena. Smith, who began coaching at Adena in 1985, now has a 400-83 career coaching record, not to mention 14 straight Scioto Valley Conference volleyball titles.

"It's making me feel old," Smith said. "I don't think when you set out to coach that you set out to get X amount of wins. That's not why you coach. I think it's a tribute to the players we've had to be able to accomplish that."

Her players certainly gave the Shermans all they could handle.

Casi Coy had 12 points and 21 digs for the Warriors, while Katie Roush added nine points, 11 kills and 24 digs. Leah Hirsch had seven kills and three blocks.

Haley Halcomb's 21 points led the Warriors. She also had four kills, 35 assists, 22 digs and four aces. Amanda Atchison added 11 kills and three blocks.

Unioto coach Pam Doughty said her girls couldn't get past scoring 14 points, despite taking one game from the Warriors -- a feat few teams are able to accomplish.

"We made quite a few errors," she said. "At one point, we made four in a row. Our main problem is inconsistency and just getting some confidence. We have three girls on the team with experience at the varsity level, and the other girls are finally starting to get comfortable. We just need to get more confident and comfortable."

Dennale Speakman led Unioto with 19 kills and 19 digs. Jessica Lewis had six points and two aces to go along with 11 kills and 21 digs. Chastity Neff was 136-for-139 in sets with 34 assists and 12 digs.

Adena's success of the last 20 years can be directly traced to its head coach and its assistants.

"We have kids who work hard," Smith said. "We give them opportunities to better themselves and they take advantage of it. Why? I don't know. They just do. We try to push them to be the best they can be and hope they take advantage of the opportunities given to them. You get a taste of success and you're hungry for it. You want more."

Adena (9-0, 6-0) will entertain Zane Trace while Unioto will travel to Paint Valley Thursday.

Adena takes over SVC volleyball lead

Southeastern volleyball coach Lori Dresbach came away impressed with Adena's aggressive style of play, even though her Panthers lost to the Warriors 25-10, 25-8, 25-8 Thursday.

"If I weren't coaching, I would have enjoyed watching them," she said. "My hat's off to Adena. They have a nice team and hit extremely well. My girls weren't used to a fierce blocking team like Adena."

Alissa Moats was 21-for-22 in hits with four kills and nine digs, while Terra Kinzer had seven points and two kills. Courtney Keesee was 25-for-26 in sets with five assists.

Amanda Atchison had 13 kills and four blocks for the Warriors, while Katie Roush had seven kills, nine points, two aces and 11 digs. Sara Smith scored 14 points with two aces and eight digs, while Summer Rinehart had 13 points.

"We played all 10 girls, which is nice," Adena coach Laura Smith said, "and they produced."

ADENA VOLLEYBALL: ATHENS INVITATIONAL CHAMPS

The Athens Invitational Volleyball Tournament debuted in 1991. 14 years later, Adena has won 11 of the 14 tournament titles. The Warriors opened with a 25-18/25-14 win over host Athens, then handed Warren Local their first loss of the season, 25-9/28-26, then bested Byesville Meadowbrook 26-24/25-14 for the championship.

All three of Adena's opponents are Division 2 schools. The Warriors are Division 4.

Adena's Amanda Atchison was named Tournament MVP, while Katie Roush and Haley Halcomb were selected All Tournament.

Third place went to Warren Local, who beat Nelsonville York in two games. There were 8 teams represented in the tournament.

THE STREAK SURVIVES
Adena downs Westfall in four to extend SVC and home win streaks.

The last time Adena lost an SVC volleyball match: 2001 at Westfall. The last time they lost in Frankfort: September 1995 against Zane Trace. To say this matchup between Westfall and Adena in Frankfort was big is a serious understatement.

The Warriors started off hot, scoring 6 straight off the arm of Katie Roush. Adena would dominate the first game 25-17.

Game 2 was much closer. Westfall had a 14-11 lead before Adena called a time out and drew to within a point at 14-13. Another Mustang run took things to 18-13 forcing another Adena time out.

The Warriors would fight back to make it 19-17. It would go back and forth with both teams serving long, giving the serve back to Adena. The Warriors capitalized on the mistake and made it 22-21 when Westfall called a time- out. Adena served long to give the ball back to Westfall and they never looked back, winning 25-22.

In game 3, Westfall had a 4-1 lead early, but Adena would come back to lead 8-5 before turning the ball back over. Adena would extend their lead with a thunderous kill at 12-8, but Westfall took the serve back on the next volley. The Lady Warriors made it a 14-9 game before Westfall called a time out. It was the right call. The Lady Mustangs stormed back to tie the game at 14. Adena then reeled off 3 straight points to climb to a 17-14 lead, but Westfall came back to within a point at 17-16.

Westfall would take the lead at 19-18 before giving the ball back to Adena. The Lady Warriors would go up 21-19 before Westfall stopped play with a time-out. It would remain close, but Adena was able to pull away at the end to win the third game 25-22.

Adena was on fire to start the 4th game, jumping to an early 7-1 lead before Westfall called time out. It wouldn't stop Katie Roush as she went on to extend the lead to 9-1 before Westfall got the ball back. The Mustangs were unable to stop the Warriors as Adena went up 16-5. The Mustangs started to claw back to make it a 16-7 game, but Adena re-took the momentum and went up 18-8 before Westfall called a time out. Westfall was able to gain a couple of points, but couldn't seem to hold off Adena. The Warriors took a 22-13 lead before Westfall got the serve back. The Mustangs next spurt got them to within 7 at 23-16 before Adena pulled away to win 25-16.

For the Warriors, it's their 39th consecutive SVC victory, 10 shy of the all time record of 49 set by Adena between 1990-93, and their 68th straight win at home, counting league and non league contests.

Amanda Atchison and Katie Roush led the Adena offensive attack with 20 & 16 kills respectively. Haley Halcomb added 41 assists and Sara Smith led the team on defense with 30 digs.

Westfall freshman Cassie Sowers had 17 kills and 18 digs.

08/31/04 - Adena, going for its 14th straight Scioto Valley Conference title, started off strong and never let up in pounding Zane Trace 25-9, 25-9, 25-7.

Amanda Atchison led the Warriors with 15 kills and Haley Halcomb added 24 assists, eight serving points and nine digs. Tara Knauff added 16 serving points and nine digs, while Katie Roush chipped in with nine kills, 23 serving points and eight aces.

Sarah Smith added six kills and 10 digs for Adena.

Paige Halley led Zane Trace (0-1, 0-1) with four blocks, three kills and seven digs, while Kendra Lallier was 44-for-45 setting with 11 assists. Lynli Zilli had 13 digs and Anna Gray had four kills, two digs and two solo blocks.

8/28/04 - Always an imposing force in SVC volleyball, the Warriors have plenty of work lying ahead of them if they hope to repeat as conference champs -- for a 14th time.

Six of the 10 players on Adena's roster are sophomores or freshmen, creating a team lacking in veteran experience.

"We're doing as well as can be expected for a young team," Smith said. "We've got one senior that we're using all the way around and a couple of juniors."

Senior Katie Roush is a three-year starter and the team's captain.

"Amanda Atchison is our middle hitter and this will be her second year starting," Smith said. "Summer Rinehart is our back row specialist. She's a junior also back from last year."

Sophomore Haley Halcomb will take over as the team's setter and Sara Smith will be used as an outside hitter.

"Their work ethic is just great," coach Smith said. "They have a lot of heart and they like each other. They work hard in practice, so hopefully their efforts will pay off."

The Warriors lost seven seniors to graduation, and Smith said that if they want to duplicate last year's success, the team must play smart.

"We've got to play aggressively, and quick and smart," she said. "We're not going to overpower anybody, so we've got to use our noggins and really play smart volleyball."
