Adena, Westfall to regional
10/26/02
Adena breezed past Nelsonville York 15-5, 15-2 and Westfall survived a
hard-fought match with Wheelersburg 16-14, 15-11 to win Division III district
championships Saturday at Wellston High School.
The victories propel the two Scioto Valley Conference powers into the Division
III regional Thursday at Byesville Meadowbrook High School.
Adena (24-1) will play the winner Saturday evening of an upper bracket district
final at Byesville between Sarahsville Shenandoah and Coshocton. The regional
semifinal will be played at 8 p.m., Thursday.

district final at Byesville between Zoarville Tuscarawas Valley and Martins
Ferry. The regional semifinal will be played at 6:30 p.m., Thursday.
Tuscarawas Valley and Westfall are no strangers. The Lady Trojans defeated
Westfall 15-7, 15-11 in a regional semifinal a year ago.
Adena 15-15, Nelsonville York 5-2
The Lady Buckeyes became the third straight tournament opponent to fall to Adena

behind the hitting of sophomore Katie Roush, who had four kills in the streak.
Amanda Kinnamon secured match point with a kill.
The Lady Warriors scored the first five points of the match before Nelsonville
York put three points on the scoreboard. That was just a momentary lull for
Adena, which got a service ace from Ashley Sowers to end game one.
Adena jumped off to a 4-0 lead in the second game before the Lady Buckeyes got
two serving points from sophomore Jordan Bateman to set the stage for the Lady
Warriors' 11-0 streak to close out the match.

ADENA WRAPS-UP SVC "GOLD
BALL" TO CONTINUE RECORD RUN
The Adena Warriors have claimed the school's 6th "Gold Volleyball", since the
trophy came into being when the league went to "double-round" play in 1987.
Adena put the finishing "Midas Touch" on the season Thursday with a 15-5/15-3
win over Zane Trace, to end their regular season at (21-1). The Warriors are the
only school to win gold in volleyball. Adena has gone (14-0) in the SVC in 1991,
92, 93, 97, 2000, and 2002. The school has now won a total of 18 SVC Volleyball
titles since the league first recognized the sport in 1976. In their stretch of
13 straight SVC titles, Adena has a league record of (170-10). Since 1995, they
have won 60 straight home matches (non league and league contests). They also
hold the record for most consecutive league victories at 49 during a run between
mid 1990-93.

and Huron, Tuscarawas Valley and Wheelersburg round out the top five.
Adena clinches volleyball
title
10/08/02
The longest championship streak in Scioto Valley Conference history grew another
year Tuesday evening as Adena's Lady Warriors locked up an undisputed 13th
straight volleyball title.
The 13-0 Lady Warriors knocked off Unioto 15-8, 15-2 to move within one game of
a gold volleyball, emblematic of an undefeated SVC season.
Adena's win locked Westfall out of a share of the title even though the Lady
Mustangs were 15-7, 15-5 winners at Piketon. Westfall (11-2, 18-2) trails Adena
(13-0, 20-1) by two matches with just one match remaining.
Huntington (9-4, 12-5) took advantage of Unioto's loss to move into sole
possession of third place in the league standings with a 15-8, 15-4 win at
Southeastern. Paint Valley defeated Zane Trace 5-15, 15-3, 15-6.
Adena 15-15, Unioto 8-2
"This one's precious," says Adena coach Laura Smith of the latest in her team's
long history of success.
"Seriously, at the start of the season I had reservations how well we would do,
especially opening with Westfall and Huntington. After we beat Westfall, I began
to think, 'Maybe we can do this.'
"The thought of being undefeated never entered my mind, though," she adds. Adena
hosts Zane Trace Thursday evening in the regular season finale with a chance to
go 14-0 in the SVC.
The string of 13 straight championships exceeds the 11 consecutive titles won by
Piketon in cross country.
Since the start of the streak, Adena is 168-11 in league play.
The win over Unioto was a typical Lady Warrior performance with "everybody
contributing," according to Smith.
However, sophomore Katie Roush missed her first serve of the evening, then
served 14 straight points in game two, including six aces. She was 19-for-20
serving and had six digs.
Stacia Barnes had seven digs, Erica Zurmehly four kills and 13 assists, Amanda
Kinnamon four kills, three points and one block, Ashley Sowers three kills and
six digs, Kortney Ward three kills, five points and one ace and Megan Alexander
three kills and one block.
The loss of senior hitter April Stamper with a knee injury with the match tied
at 6-6 in game one, put a damper on the Lady Shermans.
However, the injury is not expected to keep Stamper out of tournament play
beginning next week. She led the Lady Shermans (8-5, 11-7) with nine hits and
two kills before being hurt.
Dennale Speakman had seven hits and two kills, Jessica Lewis four points and
Jamie White 20 sets for Unioto.
Unioto won the reserve match 15-12, 15-6.
Adena's Schae Reed had seven hits and two kills, Amanda Atchison 15 hits, eight
kills and was 7-for-8 serving for four points, Liza Hirsch 33 sets and seven
assists, Sara Core 10-for-11 serving for seven points and Brittany Cottrill
5-for-5 serving for one point.

WILLIAMSPORT -- Adena sent
a message to the rest of the Scioto Valley Conference Thursday night: The
Warriors want a 13th consecutive league title.
They went a long way toward that goal, but had to battle second-place Westfall,
who had been nipping at Adena's heels through the first round of the league
schedule. Adena defeated the Mustangs 15-8, 9-15, 16-14.
Westfall held a 13-10 lead in the final match and were on the brink of sending
Division III's No. 4-ranked Warriors to their first defeat of the season at
14-13, but Adena rebounded by scoring the game's final three points to take the
win.
"We were behind most of the second game and down in the third. They had match
point on us at 14-13, but they served out of bounds and we scored three points
from there," said Adena coach Laura Smith.
The match lasted one hour, 40 minutes.
"When I got into the locker room, everyone was on the floor breathing hard,"
Smith said. "They were wiped out."
"We had a great atmosphere," said Westfall coach Lori Merriman. "We had a lot of
errors, but I think emotions had a lot to do with it."
Westfall misfired on 11 service attempts against Adena.
"You can't do that against a good team like Adena," Merriman said. "They're
ranked fourth in the state for a reason."
"They didn't lose their cool," Smith said of her Warriors. "They stayed focused,
even on game points. Westfall served out of bounds and there's your break and
you have to take advantage of it."
Katie Roush tallied 13 kills and 22 digs for the unbeaten Warriors, while Ashley
Sowers added 12 kills and eight points. Stacia Barnes had 17 digs, while Erica
Zurmehly had five kills, 38 assists, 12 poins and 17 digs.
"Erica made some nice pases," Smith said, "and Katie (Roush) was putting them
away."
Amanda Kinnamon had six kills, six points, two assists, three solo blocks and 12
digs.
As a team, Adena racked up 47 kills and 90 digs.
"Playing good competition is going to make us a better team," Smith said. "It
pushes us. When you play someone good, your weaknesses shine a little brighter."
Kelsey Sewards led Westfall in sets, connecting on 108 of 111 attempts with 11
digs and 33 assists. Abby Skinner had nine kills and 16 digs, while Carly
Cameron added 11 kills and 11 digs. She also added one solo block and four
assisted blocks.
"Carly had a fabulous night," Merriman said.
Nikki Ward led in digs with 17 and Laura Kern scored nine points and 10 digs.
Maleah Thornton had 10 points and 15 digs for Westfall.
Merriman didn't use many substitutes in the game, which may have led to some
tired legs on the court.
"The kids wanted to be out there," she said. "At least we went all out and
weren't conservative. It was just a great match. I told the girls this was
something they will remember for the rest of their lives."
It marked the first time Adena had to play three matches to earn a victory.
ADENA TAKES THREE GAME THRILLER AT WESTFALL
The Adena Warriors increased their lead in the SVC Volleyball standings with a
three game win over Westfall 15-8/9-15/16-14.
Adena trailed 13-10 in the third game before rallying to tie it at 13-13.
Westfall then had match point at 14-13, before the Warriors "wiggled off the
hook" and scored the next three points for the victory.
Adena coach Laura Smith says her Warriors buckled down when they had their backs
against the wall. Both teams had outstanding individual performances. Adena was
led by sophomore Katie Roush with 13 kills and 22 digs while Ashley Sowers added
12 kills and 11 digs. Erica Zurmehly has 38 assists, 5 kills, 17 digs and 12
points. Amanda Kinnamon added 6 kills, 12 digs, 3 solo blocks and 2 block
assists. Stacia Barnes also had 17 digs. Katie Roush was named as WKKJ's Grange
Insurance Player of the Game.
Westfall's Carly Cameron pounded 14 kills, followed by Maleah Thornton and Abby
Skinner with 9 each. Nikki Ward led with 17 digs, Skinner had 16 and Thornton
15. Kelsey Sewards dished-out 33 assists for the Mustangs.
Adena now stands at (8-0) in the SVC, while Westfall drops to a second place tie
with Huntington at (6-2) with six matches to play. Huntington travels to Adena
next Tuesday in a match that will be broadcast on WKKJ.
Adena nails big
SVC volleyball win
09/19/02
Adena took a huge step toward its 13th consecutive Scioto Valley Conference
volleyball championship with a 15-9, 8-15, 16-14 win at Westfall Thursday
evening.
The victory moves coach Laura Smith's Lady Warriors two games up on Westfall and
Huntington -- which now share second place -- with just six league games
remaining.
Huntington was a 15-5, 15-6 winner over Paint Valley, Unioto downed Southeastern
15-6, 15-1 and Piketon defeated Zane Trace 15-4, 15-11 for its second straight
SVC victory.
Adena 15-8-16, Westfall 9-15-14
Adena (8-0, 11-0) trailed 13-10 and 14-13 in game three before rallying for the
win in just the second three-game match played by both teams this season.

chipped in with 12 kills and 11 digs.

Zurmehly, Kortney Ward and Megan Alexander five apiece. Zurmehly had 38 assists,
12 points and 17 digs and Kinnamon three solo blocks, two assisted blocks and 11
blocks in play.
The loss was a bitter pill for Westfall (6-2, 8-2), bent on avenging a
disappointing 15-1, 15-2 loss to Adena in their SVC opener.
The Lady Mustangs were playing at home where they had handed Adena its first
loss of the season a year ago and had senior Abby Skinner back in the lineup
after an early-season ankle injury. Skinner did not play in the first meeting
between the two teams.
Westfall's Kelsey Sewards capped a sensational week with 108-for-111 setting
with 33 assists and 11 digs.

09/13/02
Adena 15-15, Unioto 12-9
The Lady Warriors struggled to close out Unioto in the first game as the Lady
Shermans forced four sideouts with Adena clinging to a 13-12 lead. After Adena

Adena whacks
Westfall 15-1, 15-2
08/27/02
Adena sent a resounding message to the rest of the Scioto Valley Conference
Tuesday evening -- the road to a league volleyball championship goes through
Frankfort.
Coach Laura Smith's Lady Warriors -- winners of 12 consecutive league titles --
dispatched Westfall 15-1, 15-2 in the opening night of league play.
Westfall entered Tuesday's match at Adena with high hopes of getting off to a
fast start against the league's perennial favorites.
That was not to be, however, as Adena completely dominated the Lady Mustangs.
Westfall, which won a non-conference season-opener at Teays Valley Monday
evening, played without senior outside hitter Abby Skinner, sidelined with an
ankle injury.
"We were 30-for-48 serve receiving," said Westfall coach Lori Merriman. "We're
giving them 18 points and you can't do that against a good team. You can't do
that against a bad team."
Westfall also was 19-for-38 in digs.
Carly Cameron had four kills, Maleah Thornton five digs and Kelsey Sewards six
assists for the Lady Mustangs.
Adena's 5-9 junior middle hitter Amanda Kinnamon was 12-for-13 hitting with 10
kills, sophomore Katie Roush 17-for-18 with six kills, Erica Zurmehly 6-for-7
with five kills and 21 assists, Kortney Ward 4-for-4 with three kills and Megan
Alexander 5-for-6 with four kills.
Zurmehly was 13-for-14 serving for 11 points and Stacia Barnes 11-for-11 for
seven points. Ward added eight digs and Ashley Sowers seven.
