Cincinnati St. Ursula won the first battle last night with Ursuline. The two teams traded 15-6 games and then St. Ursula outlasted Ursuline in a 20-18 marathon for the win. The teams will meet again in round two on October 1 at Ursuline.

Turning to the northwest, Bowling Green is off to a 7-0 start after a thrilling 15-10, 13-15, 15-13 win over Sylvania Northview. This sets the stage for their upcoming match with Anthony Wayne (I think next Thursday). Genoa toppled Eastwood, and Gibsonburg beat Lake.

Huron won their first match with Margaretta 15-4, 9-15, 15-10. Game One was closer than the score indicates as several Margaretta errors kept them from scoring. But with 24 service breaks, you knew things would change once the Lady Bears got on track. And get on track they did in Game Two with tenacious defense, great blocking and some spiffy setting that kept Huron's defense off balance. What were uncontested kills by Huron in Game 1 were points on Margaretta blocks in Game 2. Game three took seven minutes and ten service exchanges to get past 1-0. Huron took a 6-3 lead, then Margaretta went up 9-8. At this point the Tigers went on a blocking spree of their own and pretty much shut Margaretta down for the win. Sarah Wilber had a big night hitting for Huron, Ashley Cundiff had some blocks including a big one near the end, Amanda Fox had some great digs and timely kills, and Megan Borgelt led in assists. For Margaretta, Sarah Kuns had several kills and blocks, both Nicole Edwards and Kendra Orwig did great jobs mixing up the plays with their sets, freshman hitter Micki Kuns had three kills at the end of Game Two, and Betsy McGory was all over the floor with diving digs and passes.
