Weeks 1 and 2 Highlights - 2007

Aug. 25 - Sep. 7

Huron avenges 2006 loss to Sidney Lehman Catholic

09/07/07 - St. Ursula wins Best of Ohio again

09/02/07 - Tournament winners yesterday: Amherst Steele, Anna, Cincinnati St. Ursula, Madison Christian, Marion Local

Week 2 Tournament Results (09/01/07)

08/31/07 - Olmsted Falls and Anthony Wayne will take unbeaten records into tomorrow's Best of Ohio tournament hosted by Toledo St. Ursula. Olmsted Falls is 4-0 following last night's 20-25, 25-21, 26-28, 25-14, 15-11 cliffhanger over Amherst Steele. Anthony Wayne is off to a 3-0 mark with wins over Perrysburg and Holland Springfield. They will be joined by Toledo powers St. Ursula and Central Catholic, along with St. Henry, defending tournament champion Cincinnati St. Ursula, Elyria and Walsh Jesuit.

Amherst Steele, is the team to beat in the Norwalk Varsity Invite, albeit with a highly misleading 1-2 mark.  The Comets were stopped by Clyde in the finale last year. Norwalk and Elyria Catholic come in at 2-0.

Fans will get a preview of Division III state possibilities at Sidney Lehman Catholic's Varsity Invitational where state champion Anna and Frankfort Adena could clash in a semifinal. The strong field also includes Division IV state champion Norwalk St. Paul.

Bowling Green will join Marion Local in the Casad Invitational at Celina.

Meanwhile, Archbishop Alter looks like a frontrunner in Division II after their win over Roger Bacon. With the Spartans having also lost to Mother of Mercy and Newport Central Catholic, Alter's win did not seem noteworthy at the time, but last night Roger Bacon took McNicholas in three on the road. Tippecanoe, also a team to beat, downed Springfiled Shawnee and Kenton Ridge to go 3-0.

Elsewhere, Magnificat won another heart stopper, this time over Lake Catholic 25-22, 14-25, 25-21, 24-26, 16-14.

More Strong Teams Means Great Season in Store (PrepVolleyball.com, Ohio Preview 2007)

08/27/08 - Magnificat outlasted Amherst Steele in a barn burner Saturday 15-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-10, 16-14. Outside hitter Kristin was 31-33 on attacks with 26 kills, and 9-10 on serve receive. She served three aces. Kristen DuBroy finished 141 of 143 on setting with 60 assists. Libero Mary Lambert was 42-47 on serve receive, 17-17 on free ball passing and had 26 digs and 6 aces. 6'2" Michelle Matia had 12 kills and 8 total blocks. Overall, Magnificat was 91% on serve receive with four spikers reaching double digits in kills.

Amherst is definitely a team to watch out for, with a tenacious defense, good size and a bomber on the outside named Courtney Jarvis.

Week 1 Tournament Results (08/25/07)

In another barnburner, Olmsted Falls nipped Walsh Jesuit 33-35, 25-17, 26-24. These teams could square off again this weekend at Toledo St. Ursula's Best of Ohio tournament. Olmsted Falls also topped Beaumont in the tri-match.

Bishop Watterson boosted the Central District by winning a tri-match over Kentucky power St. Henry and GGCL member Cincinnati McAuley 25-18, 25-27, 27-25. McAuley topped St. Henry in three.

Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame swept a quad over Centerville, Chaminade-Julienne and St. Henry.

Versailles is off to a 4-0 start. The Tigers, who won the Darke County Classic on Saturday, were led by setter/hitter/blocker Justine Raterman and setter Shelby Bey, along with Megan Campbell, Emily Bohman and Shelby Shimp.
