Weeks 1 and 2 Highlights - 2009 (Aug. 29 - Sep. 5)

09/08/09 - Orrville steps up, rebounds from opening loss with big win at Mansfield Madison

09/06/09 - Mea culpa, but we missed a huge happening from last Tuesday. Milan Edison broke Huron's 99 match Sandusky Bay Conference win streak with a gritty come from behind 25-17, 20-25, 24-26, 26-24, 15-13 victory. Emily Stewart paced the Chargers with 22 kills and 17 digs, as Cami Shine added 17 kills and 18 digs. Setters Brittany Moyer and Elise Gastier put up a combined 47 assists and Moyer, in her spare time, contributed a team-leading 19 digs. Amanda Blodgett, Zoe Gastier and Abbey Cox added 21 more kills.

In tournament action this past weekend, host Sidney Lehman Catholic eased past Frankfort Adena in a semifinal 25-22, 27-29, 25-21, then rallied from 24-20 in game two to defeat Norwalk St. Paul 16-25, 27-25, 25-23 in the title match of their own Invitational. The Cavaliers' attack in the final was paced by Jessica Thobe and Morgan Schmitmeyer with 17 and 15 kills, respectively. Thobe also accounted for 16 digs. Setters Andrea Thobe and Marlee Wion combined for 39 assists. Ann Watercutter added seven kills.

Toledo St. Ursula won its own Best of Ohio Volleyball Tournament for the first time since 2005 with convincing straight set wins over Anthony Wayne, Elyria and defending champion Olmsted Falls. Only once did the Arrows yield more than 19 points. Olmsted Falls nipped Cincinnati St. Ursula and Toledo Central Catholic, behind phenomenal setting from junior Dayna Roberts, to reach the final.

Marion Local nipped St. Henry 30-28, 25-22 in a semifinal, then downed host Celina to capture the Mercer Health Invitational for the sixth straight year.

Led by junior outside hitter Deme Morales, Amherst Steele handed Lexington its first loss to win the Norwalk Invite.

Fort Recovery eased past Rockford Parkway 27-25, 12-25, 25-23 in the St. Marys Memorial Invitational.

Host Cloverleaf again beat North Royalton to win its own invite.

Bishop Hartley won the Hilliard Davidson Quad. 

09/03/09 - Versailles opened at 3-0 with another Darke County Volleyball Invitational title. St. Henry won the Coldwater Varsity Tipoff with a 27-25, 25-10 victory over Fort Loramie in the final. The Redskins also defeated D-II power Celina in three this Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, Marion Local topped Lehman Catholic in three. Russia barely got past defending MAC champ New Bremen 20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-13.

In the GGCL, Roger Bacon gave new Coach Ryan Bedinghaus a great start by beating Mother of Mercy and Newport Central Catholic to win their own tri-match. Bedinghaus took over from Caryl Schawe who left with a record of 579-174 to become Athletic Director at McAuley.

Ursuline is 3-0, but needed four games to down Sycamore on Tuesday.

Archbishop Alter downed Kettering Fairmont and Tippecanoe in four, then fell to Mother of Mercy. Bishop Fenwick opened up with a win over a tall Middletown Madison.

Lakota West took an impressive straight set win over McAuley, holding the Mohawks to 43 points.

In season openers that foreshadow possible regional match ups, Big Walnut topped Central District rival Bishop Hartley, and Magnificat nipped Amherst Steele 22-25, 28-26, 25-18, 19-25, 15-9. 

Walsh Jesuit opened strong, winning a tri-match over Olmsted Falls and Beaumont. The Warriors play in this Saturday's Best of Ohio at Toledo St. Ursula. 

Mansfield Madison coach Jen Lauber registered her 500th win on Saturday as the Rams knocked off Hilliard Davidson. Lauber previously coached Smithville and Tuscarawas Valley and is now 49-11 with Madison. Lexington rallied from 0-2 to stun Orrville 19-25, 17-25, 25-20, 25-23, 15-12 in an Ohio Cardinal Conference opener for both teams.

Tuscarawas Valley won a tri-match over Dover and Canal Fulton Northwest, 15-25, 25-22, 25-19.

Hopewell-Loudon knocked off Tiffin Columbian in straight sets in a meeting between last year’s Midland Athletic League and Northern Ohio League champs. Both squads are back pretty much intact, with Hopewell returning everyone.
