Week 1 Highlights - 2004 Week of Sep. 4 9/9/04 - Toledo St. Ursula tops rugged field to win Best of Ohio. 9/5/04 - Saturday was a banner day for Northwest Ohio volleyball with Toledo St. Ursula and Findlay pulling off big wins. Toledo knocked off Cincinnati St. Ursula in the finals of the Best of Ohio Tournament 25-14, 25-20. The Arrows earlier beat Anthony Wayne and St. Henry. Findlay toppled Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame 26-24, 25-18 in a tri-match, and also beat Defiance. Marion Local won Celina's Casad Invitational, beating Toledo Notre Dame in the championship. Bishop Ready won Madison Plains' Eagle Classic, while Lancaster beat their hosts in the final of the Licking Valley Invitational. In a single match, Magnificat came from behind to defeat cross-town rival Solon 17-25, 25-19, 26-28, 25-14, 15-7. Jonathan Alder fans were treated to another marathon, this time with a nicer ending, as the Pioneers nipped Elgin 18-25, 33-31, 21-25, 25-22, 15-9. 9/1/04 - The season is only four days old and already we have seen some highly contested matches. In action Tuesday night, Jackson Center knocked off Sidney Fairlawn 18-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-19 as Cara Metz led with 37 assists and Catie Halberstadt had 17 kills. McNicholas is off to a 2-0 start with a close 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 25-21 win over Sycamore. Seton came back to beat Oak Hills 22-25, 25-12, 24-26, 25-18, 15-7. In a marathon between archrivals, host Fairbanks outlasted Jonathan Alder 26-24, 27-25, 26-28, 23-25, 15-9. The match featured numerous comebacks as Alder led 13-8 in game one, Fairbanks 12-4 in game two, Alder 20-13 in game three and 14-8 in game four. Fairbanks had a 26-25 match point lead in the third game. Jenny Halterman led the winning Panthers with 26 kills. Fairbanks school officials remarked Wednesday morning that they could not recall the last time they got home after 10PM from a volleyball match. In other Central District matches, DeSales stopped Big Walnut 25-19, 25-17, 17-25, 25-14; Bishop Ready nipped Canal Winchester 25-21, 23-25, 25-19, 22-25, 15-13; and Olentangy Liberty won in come from behind fashion over Elgin 20-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-20, 17-15. Granville scored an impressive 25-20, 25-14, 25-13 victory over Bloom Carroll. Findlay is off to a 4-0 start but the Trojans will have their hands full this weekend as they host a tri-match with Mount Notre Dame and Defiance. In action Monday night Walsh Jesuit, led by Katie Dull with 18 kills, six blocks and nine aces, topped Parma Heights Holy Name 22-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-7, 15-12. Louisville Assumption beat Cincinnati St. Ursula 25-18, 15-17, 25-20, as the Bulldogs played without senior hitter Maggie Schmelzle who was sidelined with a sprained ankle. 9/1/04 - Jill Wolosiansky of Green recently committed to Eastern Michigan. Wolosiansky played JO ball for Team Atlantis 17 Elite. See related story Going after a perfect ending (The Beacon Journal, by Bill Lilley). 8/30/04 - Congratulations to Kelsey Schaefer, a 5'11" MB from Marion Local High School in Maria Stein, who committed to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Marist is a Division 1 school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (which includes Farifield, Manhattan, Canisius, etc,). Schaefer played for Team Atlantis 17 Elite and is the third D1 commit from her team; others are Nicole Fawcett (Penn State) and Chelsea Noble (Tennessee). 8/28/04 - Elgin repeats as Fairbanks Tri-Match champ.
