08/31/06 - The season opened with a bang last Saturday with two of my top teams going down to defeat. Division IV power St. Henry toppled Division I favorite Mt. Notre Dame 8-25, 25-22, 25-17at the Centerville Quad. This result was all the more interesting because MND defeated Oak Hills and Centerville while St. Henry lost to both teams. I guess that's called parity.

St. Henry, who nipped Celina this week, travels to Toledo on Saturday to take on Katie Dull and Walsh Jesuit in St. Ursula's Best of Ohio Classic.

Last night Mt. Notre Dame nipped Lakota West in five, taking the tiebreaker 19-17.

Meanwhile, Mother of Mercy, one of several GGCL teams that could challenge for the Division I title, topped Division II favorite Archbishop Alter 25-20, 25-23, 25-21. Alter turned around and beat defending D-II champ Roger Bacon (who in 2005 beat D-I champ Seton and several other big school powers en route to an undefeated season).

Ursuline got off to a roaring start with wins over Kettering Fairmont, Toledo Central Catholic and Kentucky power Notre Dame Academy. And McAuley won a tri-match over Central power Bishop Watterson and St. Henry (Kentucky). Watterson nipped St. Henry.

Versailles won the Darke County tournament, and Elgin took Fairbanks and South Charleston Southeastern.

Magnificat used a balanced team effort to down Amherst Steele 25-15, 25-20, 25-16. Leading the Blue Streaks were Bridget Palcko with 15 kills on 31-34 hitting and 16 blocks (4 solo), and Kristin Dubroy with 48 assists on 85-87 setting. Four other players had 6 or more kills. Libero Alex Feltes dug 16 balls and aced five serves. Palcko was named Cleveland Plain Dealer Player of the Week.

Elsewhere, Wooster took a big first step toward a league title with a road win over West Holmes. Marion Local toppled Sidney Lehman in four to snap the defending Division IV champions' 31-match win streak. Bishop Hartley defeated Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. Kings topped Milford, and was in turn topped by Bishop Fenwick. Bloom Carroll took Pickerington Central and Granville.

All of last year's state champs have now been beaten. The other Parma Padua toppled Villa Angela-St. Joseph (they did so last year too) and Oak Hills beat Seton.

The upcoming weekend features some great tournaments. The Best of Ohio contingent consists of host Toledo St. Ursula, Elyria, Cincinnati St. Ursula, Walsh Jesuit, St. Henry, Toledo Central Catholic, Anthony Wayne and Holland Springfield. Challenging Sidney Lehman at their tourney will be Anna, Fairlawn and Frankfort Adena. The Norwalk Invitational includes Amherst Steele. Marion Local will defend their Casad Invitational title against the likes of Toledo Notre Dame Academy, Bowling Green and host Celina.
