Week 2 Highlights - 2005

Week of Sep. 3-9

09/09/05 - Last night was a big one. For starters, St. Henry took a giant step toward a 13th straight MAC title with a 25-22, 25-16, 30-32, 27-25 road win over Marion Local. Versailles moved to 7-0 by nipping New Knoxville 15-25, 25-20, 25-15, 18-25, 15-11, as Justine Raterman recorded 19 kills and 11 blocks. Fort Recovery edged Minster 25-18, 14-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-9 behind junior Tiffany Gaerke's 24 kills and 9 blocks.

In the GGCL, Mount Notre Dame won a tense come from behind nail biter on the road against Mother of Mercy 21-25, 23-25, 25-21, 27-25, 15-13. St. Ursula handed Seton their first loss 25-16, 25-18, 19-25, 21-25, 15-11. Archbishop Alter stopped McNicholas 24-26, 25-17, 25-16, 25-19. Emily Borchers led the offense with 11 kills and six blocks. Kacie Hausfeld and Katie Laravie had 16 digs apiece.

Turning north, middle hitter Amy Benz pounded out 16 kills as Old Fort handed Tiffin Calvert their first loss. Senior Kelly Ruth had 24 kills and 11 digs to lead Elyria over unbeaten Strongsville. Tiffin Columbian handed Norwalk their second straight loss 17-25, 28-26, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9. Mohawk and Toledo Christian stayed unbeaten, and Perrysburg gutted out a tough win over Maumee 25-23, 25-19, 25-23.

In the northeast, Olmsted Falls nipped Westlake and Revere beat Green. Copley only outscored Wadsworth by the minimum of six while winning in three, and gave the Grizzlies their first loss 25-23, 28-26, 28-26.

In central Ohio, Bishop Hartley topped DeSales, as junior middle blocker Megan Krebs led with 13 kills and sophomore outside Teresa Trucco added 11. Junior libero Shannon Wells had 22 digs. Bloom Carroll topped Canal Winchester behind Meghan Simons with 20 kills and 7 aces, Ashley Hughes with 7 kills and 34 assists, and Katie Kreutz with 13 digs.

09/08/05 - Rocky River Magnificat tuned up for their Fall Showcase this weekend with a 25-21, 25-22, 25-13 win over cross town rival Solon. Sarah Petrulis and Clare Keeney had 12 kills each and sophomore Kristen DuBroy was 64/65 setting with 35 assists. Petrulis also had 4 aces.

The Fall Showcase includes Seton, Norwalk, Sylvania Northview and Austintown-Fitch. Some of those teams may show up unbeaten, but Norwalk will not. Shelby upended the Ladies in Blue 25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 30-28 on Tuesday.

In more Wednesday action, Marion Pleasant handed Jonathan Alder their first loss 25-23, 22-25, 25-14, 22-25, 15-11.

Bucyrus Wynford setter/middle hitter Jenny Slone has served up 13 aces in her last two matches.

Pickerington Central will host a tri-match this weekend with Tuscarawas Valley and Olmsted Falls, two state powers from different divisions and geographies that rarely if ever see each other.

Old Fort looked impressive at the St. Marys Tournament last weekend. The Stockaders beat Rockford Parkway, Lancaster and Fort Recovery.

09/07/05 - Toledo St. Ursula tops St. Henry in battle of state champs (Best of Ohio article).

Caryl Schawe got her 500th win last night as Roger Bacon toppled Mount Notre Dame 25-14, 26-24, 22-25, 25-15 (see link to Cincinnati Enquirer article under Newspaper Articles).

Meghan Simon had 15 kills and Ashley Hughes 23 assists and went 17 for 17 serving as Bloom Carroll handed Fairfield Union their first loss 25-21, 25-22, 25-21.

In other new from last weekend, Jonathan Alder came back from an 18-21 game four deficit to defeat host Marion Elgin 23-25, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22, 15-7. Katie Troyer led the Pioneers with 17 kills while libero Brooke Hochstetler had 19 digs. Versailles won the Darke County Invitational. Erin Keiser and Laura Grilliot were named to the All-Tournament team, and Justine Raterman was MVP.

09/05/05 - Sidney Lehman Catholic won their invitational, beating Frankfort Adena in the semifinal and nipping Anna in the final. Jessica Butt led the Cavaliers with 25 kills, 23 digs and 3 aces. Adena topped Minster for third. Minster also lost to Anna, but won a wild first round match over Sidney Fairlawn 27-25, 13-25, 24-22.

Meghan Simons had 26 kills to pace Bloom Carroll to the Berne Union Invitational championship. Jackson Center won their tournament, getting 32 kills from Catie Halberstadt.

At the Celina Invitational, Marion Local defeated three tough opponents in Lima Central Catholic, Toledo Notre Dame and the host Bulldogs. Maria Moeller and Jenna Barhorst took charge of the Flyers' offense with 41 kills and 83 assists, respectively, and Stephanie Brunswick had 41 digs. Moeller was tournament MVP.  

Norwalk won their invitational beating Clyde in the final 25-21, 25-17. The Ladies in Blue rallied from 10-15 to in game one. With the score tied at 21, Lauren Simon spiked three kills and Jessica Winkelman scored the game winner on a cross court kill. Setter Megan Sellers and hitter Lisa Lee were also impressive. In a scrimmage preview last Tuesday Norwalk stopped Huron in two, shutting down their offense with some great blocking.

Norwalk will participate in the Fall Showcase Classic at Magnificat  this Saturday, along powerful Cincinnati Seton
