Weeks 3 and 4 Highlights - 2007 Sep. 8-21 09/21/07 - Two teams that haven't gotten much attention made statements this week. One is tenth ranked Heath, and Division III state title hopefuls better start paying attention to them. The Bulldogs have been been clobbering teams, and last night they chewed up Division II top-ranked Bexley 25-15, 25-15, 25-13 in a meeting of unbeaten teams. On Wednesday, unranked Toledo Central Catholic edged host and 12th rated in Division I Toledo Notre Dame Academy 25-18, 19-25, 26-24, 20-25, 15-12. The Irish remain unbeaten in the City League. In key OCC matches, Hilliard Davidson nipped Dublin Coffman 25-18, 27-25, 17-25, 20-25, 15-12, and on Tuesday, Worthington Kilbourne handed Westerville South its first loss 25-20, 25-22, 18-25, 18-25, 15-11. In the GGCL, Seton won their first GGCL match by nipping St. Ursula 25-22, 17-25, 25-23, 14-25, 15-11. Mother of Mercy took McAuley in three, while Mt. Notre Dame squeezed past host Ursuline 25-21, 20-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-11. Chaminade-Julienne remained unbeaten in the GGCL Grey with a win over Bishop Fenwick. Marion Local and Versailles remain unbeaten overall and will face off next Thursday. They along with New Bremen are 5-0 in the Midwest Athletic Conference. Undefeated Evergreen handed Delta its first loss on Tuesday. Evergreen and Archbold are undefeated in Northwest Ohio Athletic League. Over in the southeast, Monroe Central topped previously unbeaten Buckeye Trail on Tuesday, and Shenandoah edged Buckeye Trail 25-18, 23-25, 9-25, 25-21, 15-12 last night. Monroe (12-0) will host Shenandoah on Monday. In other action this week, visiting Gilmour Academy gave Independence its second loss 25-18, 21-25, 25-14, 19-25, 15-11, while Magnificat won a tough four game match with Villa Angela-St. Joseph on Tuesday. West Salem Northwestern rebounded with a win over Creston Norwayne. And Frankfort Adena now leads the Scioto Valley Conference by two after downing Unioto. 09/20/07 - Smithville digs Northwestern, serves up victory 09/20/07 - Big comebacks ruled last night's match between Bedford St. Peter Chanel and Elyria Catholic. Trailing 2-0 in games and 16-7 in game three, Chanel tied up the match and took a 14-9 lead in game five. But Elyria Catholic rallied to win 25-13, 25-22, 21-25, 13-25, 17-15. Mother of Mercy will hold their annual Cincinnati Volleyball Fall Classic this weekend. Pool play will begin at 12:00 noon on Saturday, and Sunday's action will start at 10:00 AM. Participating teams are: Vandalia-Butler, Lexington (Ky.) Henry Clay, Louisville (Ky.) Holy Cross, Rocky River Magnificat, Cincinnati McAuley, Mother of Mercy, Newport Central Catholic (Ky.), Notre Dame Academy (Ky.), Solon, St. Francis DeSales, St. Henry (Ky.), Toledo Central Catholic. 09/19/07 - Several teams made successful road trips last night. Top ranked Versailles (D-III) moved to 13-0 with a four game win at St. Henry. The final set score was 28-26. Second ranked D-I Mt. Notre Dame also won their fourth game 28-26 to down host McAuley. Number one Mother of Mercy remained unbeaten at Cincinnati St. Ursula. And Smithville, which last week lost its first Wayne County Athletic League match since 2005 to Norwayne, knocked fourth rated host West Salem Northwestern from the ranks of the unbeaten 25-22, 19-25, 18-25, 25-21, 15-11. 09/17/07 - The GGCL continues to roll in Division I. Mt. Notre Dame cruised to two game wins over host Walsh Jesuit and Magnificat on Saturday, with Magnificat downing the Warriors in three in the final match. Mother of Mercy, who nipped Mt. Notre Dame Tuesday and moved to number one, rolled over Lakota West and Harrison. Ursuline was most impressive in their take downs of host Vandalia Butler and Toledo St. Ursula, considering they were without the services of sophomore sensation Jade Henderson. Seton did not play Saturday, but the weekend before the Saints defended their Fall Showcase Classic Title by defeating host Magnificat. Elsewhere in southwest, Lebanon is 12-0 against teams like Mason, Colerain and Centerville. And Oak Hills beat McNicholas in a tri-match. Chaminade-Julienne won at Lehman Catholic, also beating Kettering Fairmont. In the northwest, Elyria downed Medina, Fairview Park Fairview and Kenston to defend their Rocky River Invitational title. Toledo Notre Dame Academy did not play last weekend. The Eagles, who did not play last weekend, have lost only to Louisville Assumption 25-22, 25-19 (but were severely stressed by Toledo Bowsher early in the season). Bowling Green took two big steps toward another NLL crown last week with wins at Sylvania Southview and Northview. Southview, you ask? Well, earlier this season Southview beat Northview (they did that last year too)! BeeGee will face Anthony Wayne tomorrow. The Generals are 6-0 in the NLL, and they've also beaten Southview and Northview. Solon, which recently beat Elyria, is unbeaten in the northeast. They will join Magnificat at Mother of Mercy's Fall Classic this weekend. Mentor is also undefeated with wins over Strongsville and North Royalton. And Bishop Watterson is unbeaten in Central and is now ranked third in the state! The Eagles downed Division II top ranked Bishop Hartley on Thursday. Westerville South won a tri-match to go 8-0. Division II looks wide open this year and last weekend did not help clarify matters. Hartley fell to second, but Central District held onto the top spot as 11-0 Bexley took over, fresh from wins over Newark Catholic and Hebron Lakewood. In the southwest, Tippecanoe remained unbeaten but struggled against host Troy in a tournament. Archbishop Alter is now 4-5 after a weekend loss at Centerville, and McNicholas is 8-4 - but you have to discount those losses due to extreme schedule strength. Salem remained unbeaten with a tri-match win over Girard and Austintown-Fitch. Previously undefeated Wooster Triway lost three times in a quad to Springfield Shawnee, Albany Alexander and host River View. In Division III, Lima Central Catholic moved to 11-2 by capturing a tri over Indian Lake and division IV power Jackson Center. Delta (9-0) and Archbold (8-0) won tri-matches last weekend. Delta will visit 7-0 Evergreen in a big Northwest Ohio Athletic League contest tomorrow evening. In Central, Heath romped through their quad to go 10-0. Except for Granville and Newark Catholic, the Bulldogs have won in straight sets. Alexander moved to 10-2 with their quad win at River View. Their two losses are to Marion Local and Celina. And watch out for Spartans. The 9-0 Marion Pleasant Spartans won Marion Harding's quad, which included the always tough Mansfield Madison. And the Roger Bacon Spartans evened their record at 6-6 by winning Mason's quad. Centerburg lost for the first time in the Newark Invitational to the host Wildcats in the championship match. Meanwhile, Anna lost again, this time to New Bremen at the Covington tri-match. Versailles, which finally moved up to number one this week after being second to Anna all last season, beat Celina last Tuesday and remains unbeaten. Top ranked in Division IV, Marion Local is 11-0 against a schedule that reads like Who's Who in Volleyball. The Flyers ended Anna's 37 match win streak on Tuesday. Tuscarawas Central Catholic won a five game battle of unbeatens over Berlin Hiland. Kalida, whose only loss is to Lima Central, handed Ayersville their first loss on Thursday. And hot off the press, Leipsic, whose only loss is to Ottawa-Glandorf, just gave Ayersville their second loss tonight. Week 4 Tournament Results (09/15/07) 09/14/07 - Playing before a boisterous crowd at McAuley, Cincinnati St. Ursula topped the Mohawks 26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 25-17. Senior libero Emily Shelton led the visiting Bulldogs with 30 digs and senior outside hitter Jayna Stenger added 20 kills. Week 3 Tournament Results (09/08/07) 09/12/07 - Marion Local wins wild tiebreaker to end Anna win streak at 37 09/12/07 - Second ranked Mother of Mercy won a big one on the road, tripping up top ranked Mt. Notre Dame 25-15, 24-26, 25-17, 24-26, 15-9. Host Cincinnati St. Ursula nipped archrival Ursuline in five. Elsewhere, Marion Local edged Anna in a battle of top ranked teams, thereby ending the Rockets 37 match win streak, 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 16-14. Flyers' middle blocker Megan Barhorst outdueled Anna middle Kelli Barhorst in a wild tiebreaker that included long and desperate volleys and huge momentum swings. After Anna scored seven straight to go up 11-4, Marion ran off eight points for a 13-12 lead. Getting back to the GGCL, Mt. Notre Dame and Mercy will meet again on September 27. That's the same night Marion Local will travel to Versailles for a Midwest Athletic Conference showdown. Versailles, by the way, is ranked second to Anna in Division III. The 10-0 Tigers, whose only loss last year was to the Rockets in the regional final, beat Celina on the road last night 25-23, 25-22, 25-16, led by Megan Cambbell with 13 kills, Justine Raterman with 23 assists and Emily Bohman with 13 digs. Campbell, setter Shelby Bey, Raterman and Bohman combined for 10 blocks. Mercy spikes Cougars (Cincinnati Enquirer, by Tom Groeschen) 09/10/07 - The first state poll was released yesterday and the top ranked teams are Cincinnati Mt. Notre Dame, Bishop Hartley, Anna and Marion Local. And tomorrow night the last two will clash in Maria Stein. Marion Local has beaten the likes of Bowling Green, Vandalia-Butler Sidney Lehman, Alexander and St. Henry. Anna, which has won 37 straight, captured the Lehman Invitational crown with wins over their host, plus Frankfort Adena and Minster. Jackson Center is 6-2 and lost to both teams. They gave Anna some trouble, if that means anything. Also on Tuesday, Mt. Notre Dame will host second ranked Mother of Mercy. And on Thursday, Bishop Watterson, ranked fifth in Division I, will travel to Bishop Hartley in a battle of Columbus powers. Cincinnati McAuley senior middle hitter Rachel Krabacher had 18 kills and sophomore outside hitter Hannah Vanarsdall added eight as the host Mohawks defeated higher ranked Ursuline 25-22, 25-19, 25-18 in a Girls' Greater Cincinnati League volleyball match Thursday night. McAuley senior setter Michelle Clifford had a huge day with 33 assists. Junior Lauren Meister closed out game 3 and the match with two service aces. 09/09/07 - Huron defeated Parma Padua Franciscan 14-25, 17-25, 25-23, 25-15, 15-11. Huron outside hitters Sara Sage and Susie Isphording both reached the 1,000 career kill plateau in this match.
