Week 3 Highlights - 2005 Week of Sep. 10-16
Chelsea Campbell sparked a game four rally and she and Melissa Szkutnik took charge of game five as Perrysburg took a big step toward the Northern Lakes League title last night with a 25-23, 14-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-7 road win over arch rival Bowling Green. (see link to related Toledo Blade article under Newspaper Articles). Kings topped Wilmington to go 3-0 in the FAVC. The Lady Knights were led by outside hitter Erin Wolfe and libero Julia Harvat.
Walsh Jesuit knocked off Lake Catholic to win their invite for the first time since 2002. Junior outside Katie Dull was named tournament MVP. Thomas Worthington moved to 7-0, beating host Hilliard Davidson 25-23, 25-23 in the title match of the Sharon M. Huesman Memorial Tournament. Kings took their second straight Miami University Middletown Invitational crown, nipping Springboro 25-23, 25-23 in the final. Fort Loramie edged Sidney Fairlawn 18-25, 25-19, 15-13 to take the West Liberty Invitational. Leslie Hoelscher had 14 kills, 6 block assists, and 1 solo block, and Hayley Barhorst had 30 assists. With the win the Redskins avenged Tuesday night's 26-28, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 8-15 loss to Fairlawn, a defensive struggle in which the teams combined for over 200 digs.
Georgetown stunned
Eastern Brown 25-19, 25-15 to win the Domino's Pizza Volleyball Classic.
Georgetown played exceptionally well, especially seniors Brittany Click
and Streetsboro is 7-0 after beating host Maple Heights in the finals of their tournament. Bloom Carroll won the Pickerington North Quad to go 10-0 on the season. The Bulldogs were led by hitters Christine Stephan and Meghan Simons, and setter/hitter Ashley Hughes. In tri-match action, Tuscarawas Valley toppled Olmsted Falls 17-25, 25-16, 15-11, Convoy Crestview beat host Galion, Findlay downed Bowling Green and Mansfield Madison, and Archbishop Alter beat Dayton Carroll and Centerville. On Thursday, West Holmes defeated host Mansfield Madison 19-25, 25-17, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12. Keysha Allison led with 27 kills and 17 assists, as the young Knights played very well when it mattered. Kaylee Puster, a transfer from Madison, had 13 kills, and Markie McDowell chipped in with 12. Also on Thursday, Ursuline defeated McAuley in a GGCL battle 18-25, 25-17, 25-17, 25-18. McAuley prevailed in game one due primarily to outstanding blocking by their front line, led by senior Ashley Criswell. Key to the Lions' success was their unbelievable defense, anchored by junior libero Abby O'Connor.
