Weeks 3 and 4 Highlights - 2006

Sep. 9-22

9/17/06 - Saturday saw two matches involving unbeaten teams that could face each other again in regionals. In a Division II battle, Warsaw River View came up with a huge defensive effort, led by libero Samantha Dickerson along with Chelcee Honabarger and Kasey Bowman, to pull out a 25-22, 15-25, 25-23 victory over a young and very talented Wooster Triway.

To meet again, River View has to defend their Ridgewood District title, while Triway must navigate the Canton South district, home of still unbeaten Canal Fulton Northwest.

The senior-sophomore sister combination of Kristin and Kari Daugherty, along with setter Emily Cochran, paced the Bears' offense. The Daugherty sisters also led the scoring and rebounding on River View's state champion basketball team last March.

Leading Triway were junior middles Kelsey Reichert and Stephanie Lawson, sophomore outsides Leigha Poulson and Ellen Grenert and sophomore setter Allison Kearney.

In Division I, meanwhile, Solon nipped Wadsworth 20-25, 25-16, 25-17, 23-25, 15-12. Pacing the Comets was 6'1" junior middle Kayla Jeter with 19 kills, while senior Aimey Reynolds nailed 21 points for Wadsworth.

Returning to Division II, Walsh Jesuit knocked off Beaumont and previously undefeated Olmsted Falls in a tri-match. Beaumont nipped Olmsted Falls 25-20, 21-25, 25-23.

In tournament action, Elyria edged Magnificat 25-21, 13-25, 27-25 and then beat Fairview Park Fairview and Lakewood to win the Rocky River Invitational. Old Fort topped Coldwater 25-23, 19-25, 25-19 to take Lima Bath's Kewpee Invitational. Frankfort Adena handed Hubbard their first loss in the Worthington Kilbourne Invitational.

Tipp City Tippecanoe stayed unbeaten by taking Bellbrook in the final of the Troy Invitational.

And in a topsy-turvy tri-match at Vandalia-Butler, host Butler was beaten by Toledo St. Ursula, who was then defeated by Cincinnati Ursuline, who in turn was upended by Butler.

9/13/06 - Anna won impressively over Marion Local 25-19, 25-14, 25-22 in a match pitting Ohio’s top ranked Division III and IV teams. Racheal Billing had 19 kills and Kelsie Zumberger 37 assists for the Rockets. Elsewhere in the southwest Archbishop Alter downed Chaminade-Julienne to remain atop the GGCL Grey Division. Bishop Fenwick stayed in the running with a win over Dayton Carroll.

Chaminade, Fenwick and Carroll all joined the Grey this season.

Alter now holds a two match lead over Roger Bacon, whom they defeated in week one. Last week Hamilton Badin beat the Spartans 25-20, 13-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-10. It was the Rams' first win over Roger Bacon since joining the GGCL in 1988.

Ursuline moved to the top of the GGCL Scarlet, and stayed unbeaten, by nipping Best of Ohio champ Cincinnati St. Ursula in a 25-18, 25-23, 26-28, 24-26, 15-13 marathon.

St. Ursula, which toppled host Toledo St. Ursula on September 2 to win the Best of Ohio, is now 0-2 in a conference in which all six teams are ranked, and anyone can beat anyone. Speaking of which, Mother of Mercy knocked off top ranked Mt. Notre Dame 19-25, 25-17, 25-21, 18-25, 15-12, while McAuley upended Fall Classic champ Seton in a four game struggle.

Elsewhere, North Royalton stopped Strongsville 25-14, 28-26, 25-12 in a key Pioneer Conference match. The Bears got strong performances from Ohio State bound middle hitter Allie Schwarzwalder and 6'2" freshman sister Amy, along with setter Krista O’Connor, outsides Shannon Judd and Michelle Naab and middle Tina Dimitrijevs. The Bears' hitters range from 6’0” to 6’4”. Strongsville was led by junior outside Katie Donahue.

North Royalton is pointing to a September 28 rematch with Elyria, the only so far team to beat them.

In the northeast, unbeaten Wooster Triway nipped Tuscarawas Valley. The Titans, who took Orrville in three on Saturday, will travel to River View on for a quad on Saturday, and on September 30 will face Wooster.

Also staying unbeaten were Canal Fulton Northwest and Olmsted Falls, which squeezed by Minerva and Westlake, respectively, in five. Northwest toppled then unbeaten Wooster last week.

In the northwest, Bowling Green won a key NLL match over Perrysburg. On Monday, Toledo St. Ursula nipped Magnificat 23-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-20 in a possible regional preview.

In tournament action last weekend, Albany Alexander won the Chillicothe Invitational winning a title match of unbeatens over Washington Court House. Defending state champ Seton dethroned defending Fall Classic Magnificat, who won last year's event by beating the Saints.

Streetsboro took the Maple Heights Classic, beating their hosts in the final.

Undefeated Bishop Hartley, led by Miami University bound setter Michelle Mangia, downed Hilliard Darby to take the Sharon M. Huesman Memorial.

Walsh Jesuit toppled Beaumont and Lake Catholic to win their own invitational. The Warriors only loss to date is 23-25, 21-25 to Toledo St. Ursula in the Best Of Ohio. The Warriors took third in that one with wins over St. Henry and Elyria.

In tri-matches, Lakota West took Big Walnut, while Bowling Green topped Findlay and Mansfield Madison. Pickerington North downed then unbeaten Bloom-Carroll in a quad.

Olmsted Falls defeated Tuscarawas Valley in a single match behind the hitting of sophomores Lauren Whyte and Brittany Snider, and the passing of libero Meghan Mental. Tusky Valley was led offensively by Hillary Zimmerman and Olivia Richardson.
