Week 4 Highlights - 2004

Week of Sep. 25

9/27/04 - Oregon Clay beat Newark Catholic and Norwalk St. Paul to win the Golden Spike held at Holland Springfield last Saturday. (see updated Tournament Results)

9/26/04 - Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) won Cincinnati Mother of Mercy's Fall Classic for the second straight year. The Pandas defeated Mercy in the final 30-28, 25-20. Chaminade-Julienne won the Second Place Teams Bracket bracket by nipping Louisville Holy Cross 26-24, 11-25, 15-13. C-J also beat St. Henry (Ky.) to avenge an earlier loss -- which happened in the tri-match when they beat Roger Bacon. DeSales topped Solon in the Third Place Bracket 27-25, 25-16.

Orrville (15-0) beat West Holmes for a third time 19-25, 25-6, 15-11 and repeated as champions of the Massillon Jackson Invitational.

Findlay topped Whitmer, Elida and Ashland to win the Rebel Classic at Toledo Bowsher.

Olmsted Falls (13-0) won their Autumn Classic with a 25-22, 25-15 victory over Villa Angela-St. Joseph in the championship.

Kings is now 12-1 as they won their own tri-match over Finneytown and Edgewood.

Last week St. Henry beat Rockford Parkway 25-19, 25-18 to win the Lima Bath Invitational. This week the Redskins beat Parkway again 25-28, 25-15, to win the New Knoxville Invitational. The teams will meet on October 7 in their league match.

Hubbard won their own invitational topping Strongsville in the title match.

9/26/04 - Ben Logan nipped Westfall 25-23, 25-23 to win the Elgin Classic (see Article). Lutheran West remained undefeated by handing Lakewood their first loss 25-17, 25-15 to win the Betsy Zimmerman Tournament at Parma Normandy. Oak Hills defeated Sidney Lehman to win the Piqua Invitational for the second straight year. Minster won their own tournament, beating Botkins in the final 23-25, 25-17, 15-7. Botkins surprised Marion Local in the semifinal. Findlay topped Whitmer, Elida and Ashland to win the Bowsher Invitational.

9/24/04 - West Holmes coach Jim Park called last night's match with Orrville "one of the best matches I've been around in 21 years". Considering that Orrville won, you know it had to be good. The score was 25-12, 24-26, 26-28, 25-22, 15-11. The two teams could meet again Saturday in the Massillon Jackson Invitational.

9/24/04 - Roger Bacon made a strong statement last night win a convincing 25-18, 25-12, 25-18 win over McNicholas (No. 2 no longer (by Tom Groeschen, Cincinnati Enquirer). The win puts Roger Bacon in the drivers seat in the GGCL Grey. Sidney Fairlawn handed Jackson Center their first loss 25-23, 25-19, 28-26. In GGCL Division I action, Ursuline knocked off arch-rival St. Ursula 25-19, 25-22, 26-24. 

9/23/04 - Roger Bacon defeated Hamilton Baden 25-8, 25-16, 25-8 on Tuesday, setting up tonight's match at McNicholas between the top two teams in this weeks' Coaches Poll as a battle to determine the GGCL Grey Division front runner. McNicholas is ranked #42 and Roger Bacon #54 in the country by PrepVolleyball's 9-16-04 poll.

The match will involve 5 members of the same club team playing against each other: Katey Schroeder and Sara Staubach of McNick against Jamie Frey, Heather Hausfeld and Katie Veatch of Roger Bacon. All played for Team Z 16-1 last club season.

9/22/04 - Archbishop Alter upends #1 Cincinnati McNicholas

9/22/04 - Archbishop Alter upended #1 Cincinnati McNicholas last night 25-20, 25-21, 27-25. Olmsted Falls eked past Fairview 25-22, 24-26, 23-25, 30-28, 16-14. In the GGCL Division I, Ursuline topped Seton 19-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-21, while Mt. Notre Dame nipped McAuley 26-24, 19-15, 25-21, 28-26. Celina toppled Sidney Lehman, and St. Henry beat Versailles. Oakwood, Ben Logan and Jackson Center remained unbeaten.
