Week 4 Highlights - 2005 Week of Sep. 17-23
Elyria Catholic won the Firelands tri-match, defeating their hosts 19-25, 25-14, 15-8. Paige Samek had 15 assists, Lindsay Fiore 10 kills, Monica Harris 8 solo blocks, and Allison Vargo served 11 points. In action during the week, Columbiana Crestview won a battle of unbeatens over Streetsboro 26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17. Across the state, undefeated Convoy Crestview was not as fortunate, losing to undefeated Columbus Grove 22-25, 28-26, 25-27, 25-22, 15-17. The NLL race tightened as Sylvania Northview toppled Perrysburg on Tuesday 19-25, 25-20, 27-25, 23-25, 19-17, and Bowling Green knocked off Northview on Thursday 27-29, 25-19, 20-25, 25-15, 17-15. Talk about nail biters! In a battle between the top two Division II teams, top ranked Roger Bacon beat number two Archbishop Alter. Toledo St. Ursula beat Central Catholic in a league match. Anna avenged an early season loss to Fort Loramie. Wauseon toppled Eastwood 22-25, 25-18, 20-25, 28-26, 15-11.
On Wednesday night Elyria Catholic toppled Lake Catholic 25-21, 25-17, 25-22. The Panthers were led by Lindsay Fiore with 10 kills and 20 digs, and Monica Harris with 7 solo blocks. Paige Samek had 33 assists, and she and Kimi Nakamura combined for 29/29 serving and 18 points. We haven't heard much from North Union for awhile, but the Wildcats are 5-1 after beating Elgin in 25-16, 25-19, 26-24 on Tuesday, thanks to a blocking rampage by Jamie Goddard and Stephanie Goddard. The Wildcats rallied from 20-24 in game three.
Walnut Hills kept their record unblemished and tuned up for this weekend's Fall Classic at Mercy by beating Winton Woods.
Sidney Lehman will be busy again this week. The Cavaliers play Celina on Tuesday and travel to Piqua for a tournament on Saturday. On October 1 they play in Convoy Crestview's invitational. In key league matches Tuesday, undefeated Bucyrus Wynford hosts Buckeye Central while undefeated Versailles travels to St. Henry.
Elyria won the Rocky River Invitational, beating Lakewood in the semifinal and undefeated Magnificat in the final 25-19, 15-25, 15-12. Sidney Lehman stayed unbeaten against their rugged schedule with wins over Chaminade-Julienne and Kettering Fairmont. Fairmont also beat Chaminade. Lakota West moved to 11-1 with wins over Harrison and Mother of Mercy. Oak Hills won their own invitational, Bellbrook won at Troy and Roger Bacon took the Mason Quad. Toledo St. Ursula won the Vandalia-Butler tri-match, knocking off Cincinnati Ursuline as well. In single matches against strong non-league opponents, Mount Notre Dame toppled Central District power Bishop Watterson, and Seton knocked off Notre Dame Academy (Ky.). Kidron Central Christian is now 8-1 after nipping Smithville 26-24, 28-26, 25-22, while West Holmes beat Massillon Jackson 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 to go 7-1.
In the GGCL, Seton edged McAuley on the road 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, and Mount Notre Dame rebounded from Tuesday's loss to Seton by handing St. Ursula their first league loss 25-13, 26-24, 25-22. Mercy edged Ursuline 23-25, 26-28, 25-11, 25-20, 15-10. Versailles went to 11-0 after edging Fort Recovery 25-23, 19-25, 28-26, 20-25, 15-10. Archbishop Alter topped Chaminade-Julienne 25-21, 25-20, 25-14. Centerburg took over sole possession of the Mid-Buckeye Conference with a 25-15, 25-23, 25-15 win over previously unbeaten Loudonville. Toledo Christian fought off a comeback by host Cardinal Stritch 25-19, 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 15-7. On Wednesday night Roger Bacon beat St. Henry (Ky.) 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20 in a match between ranked teams from neighboring states. Oregon Clay moved to 6-1 with a 17-25, 25-17, 20-25, 25-19, 15-12 win over Toledo Notre Dame Academy. Tuesday was the night for marathons. Firelands edged Bay in a 2 hour 15 minute nail biter 25-23, 21-25, 19-25, 28-26, 15-12. For Firelands, Alyssa Stanley had 12 kills, Swiss exchange student Lara Eigenmann added 10, and Bethany Wickes chipped in with 9. Alyssa Stevens led the defense with 22 digs, and setter Marlene Huffman had 21 assists. Kettering Fairmont won a two hour barn burner over Centerville 25-27, 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 17-15, to go 3-0 in the GWOC. Lindsey Jacoby led Centerville's offense with 34 assists, Stephani Bennett had 14 kills and 5 aces, Nicole Womack had 5 blocks, and Teresa Beach tied Bennett with 10 digs. Jenna Caylor led the Elks with 19 kills, Jordan Bradowsky had 32 assists and Danah Brust 5 blocks. In GGCL marathons, Seton tripped up Mt. Notre Dame 25-17, 25-23, 26-28, 22-25, 15-11, while St. Ursula squeezed by Ursuline 25-15, 24-26, 20-25, 25-16, 16-14. Sidney Lehman stayed unbeaten, barely, coming back to beat St. Henry 17-25, 23-25, 25-21, 30-28, 15-13. And in Central District, Lancaster handed Gahanna their first loss 26-24, 25-21, 20-25, 15-25, 16-14, while Westerville South won a battle of unbeatens over Worthington Kilbourne 24-26, 24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 15-7. Huron won a four game nail biter over Clyde 26-24, 25-23, 23-25, 28-26. Wooster topped Mansfield Madison 25-22, 22-25, 25-12, 25-16. On Monday, Girard knocked Lakeview from the ranks of the undefeated 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18.
