The Northwest Conference battle for sole possession of first place also happened to be the Volley for the Cure game. Over $17,000 was raised between the two schools. LCC won the match 25-9, 25-16, 25-14 behind 15 Rachael Illig kills. Alexis Diglio chipped in with 37 assists. This raises LCC's record to 18-2 and 8-0 in the league. 10/05/07 - GGCL breadth and depth evident as Cincinnati Ursuline wins NEO Power Volleyball Invitational 10/05/07 - Creston Norwayne overcame deficits and an apparent match point to upend host Smithville for the second time this season. this time by the score of 10-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 16-14. The teams are now tied for second in the Wayne County Athletic League, one game behind West Salem Northwestern. Smithville, which will meet Northwestern in their season finale, handed the Huskies their only loss, and the Huskies in turn have beaten Norwayne twice. The Smithies led 16-12 in game two and 8-3 in the tiebreaker. They appeared to have won when a Norwayne spike sailed out, but the call was overturned due to what was determined to be a Smithville touch. Meanwhile, and bad news for the aforementioned teams, two-time defending northeast region champ Villa Angela-St. Joseph tuned up for the state tournament with a huge 26-24, 19-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-12 victory over Lake Catholic. In the northwest, Bowling Green beat Sylvania Southview to clinch at least a tie for the Northern Lakes League crown. Kansas Lakota staved off upset minded Tontogany Otsego 22-25, 26-24, 19-25, 25-16, 15-12, as Cami Wasserman led with 37 kills and 29 digs. Chaminade-Julienne clinched the GGCL Grey with wins over Archbishop Alter last night and Archbishop McNicholas on Tuesday. Tipp City Tippecanoe downed Bellefontaine and clinched a tie for the Central Buckeye Conference Kenton Division title. Norwalk clinched a tie for the Northern Ohio League title with impressive wins over Shelby and second place Bellevue. In a non-league match on Wednesday between northwest regional hopefuls, Magnificat nipped Olmsted Falls 19-25, 25-18, 15-25, 25-22, 15-10. Finally, in Central on Tuesday, Heath moved to 20-0 taking a 22-25, 25-12, 21-25, 25-17, 15-11 squeaker from Newark Catholic. And in a score we missed last Saturday, 16-1 Centerburg handed Marion Pleasant its first loss 22-25, 25-11, 25-10, 21-25, 17-15. 10/02/07 - Tuscarawas Valley defeated injury riddled Wooster Triway in straight sets tonight 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 to avenge an earlier loss to the Titans and gain a first place tie in the Principals Athletic Conference. Triway has been playing without star setter Allison Kearney since mid-September, and has missed 6'1" outside Ellen Grenert all season. When it rains it pours and their other setter, Leah Molter, is injured as well. Tusky Valley was led by sophomore middle Sarah Brown, setter Karley Norris, and outsides Allison Swarny and Jess Harmon. 10/02/07 - Unranked Toledo Central Catholic snapped an 18-match losing streak dating back to 1999 against Toledo St. Ursula last night with a gutsy come-from-behind 22-25, 18-25, 25-19, 26-24, 15-8 victory on the road. The Irish started this season with a disappointing seventh place finish in St. Ursula’s Best of Ohio Invitational. The Arrows finished second to Cincinnati St. Ursula. But Central is now 17-3 with wins over Notre Dame Academy, Solon, Magnificat, and St. Ursula, all ranked in Division I. Central 10-0 in City League (Toledo Blade, by Steve Junga) Anna also won in five on the road, nipping Lehman Catholic 25-21, 26-28, 22-25, 25-23, 15-10. 09/30/07 - It was a great weekend of volleyball. Seventh ranked Ursuline took first place in the Northeast Ohio Power Volleyball Invitational, winning the championship match over #12 Magnificat 25-13, 18-25, 25-14, 25-21. In its inaugural year, this was one of the premier tournaments in the state, with eight of the ten teams ranked, and two teams undefeated coming in. Toledo Notre Dame Academy (#14) nipped Solon (#4) in five for third, Mentor (#13) rallied from 0-2 to beat Mentor Lake Catholic (#11 D-II) for fifth, Wooster topped Walsh Jesuit (#14 D-II) for seventh, and St. Henry (#10 in Kentucky) took ninth over Lakota West. Norwalk St. Paul (#8 D-IV) won huge at the Convoy Crestview Lady Knight Pepsi Invitational. The Flyers started off by knocking Ottawa-Glandorf (#5 D-II) from the ranks of the unbeaten. Then they took down scrappy Fort Recovery and #18 D-II Celina. Celina, by the way, had beaten top ranked Marion Local in round one 26-24, 21-25, 26-24! Division IV suddenly doesn’t look so obvious. In other tournament finals, Elyria topped undefeated Keystone in the Mayfield Invitational and New Knoxville bested Minster at Lima Shawnee. Archbold won their own Spike-Tacular for the second straight year over Kidron Central Christian. Kidron won that tournament in 2003, ’04 and ’05. Villa Angela-St. Joseph rolled over Lutheran West, Strongsville and host Independence in a quad, and looks good to go in their quest for a third straight regional title. In single matches, Versailles rebounded from Thursday’s loss to Marion Local with a win over Sidney Lehman Catholic. On an ominous note for Division III hopefuls, Roger Bacon rallied on the road to beat Seton 10-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-18, 15-13. A final four match-up between the Spartans and Villa Angela-St. Joseph is plausible. And for anyone who is counting Archbishop Alter out, the Knights did lose for the seventh time this year. But Toledo St. Ursula had to pull out all the stops to win 20-25, 25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 20-18. Two days before that, Alter beat #7 McNicholas. Getting back to Division I, #2 Mt. Notre Dame handed #3 Bishop Watterson its first loss 23-25, 25-21, 25-10, 25-19. And Lakota East did likewise, handing #9 Lebanon its first blemish. Speaking of Mt. Notre Dame, Rachael Adams with 31 kills wasn’t the only one with big numbers in the Cougars’ win over top ranked Mother of Mercy on Thursday. Setter Rachel Rohlfs had 65 assists, libero Abbie Ress 41 digs and Amanda Wilken six solo blocks (Adams added five and Jen Meyer four). And McAuley middle hitter Rachel Krabacher is now the Mohawks’ all-time leader in kills with over 750. 09/28/07 - Home court advantage gets touted a lot in sports, but visitors have done very well this week. For the second time in sixteen days, number one in Division IV Marion Local has defeated a top ranked Division III team. On September 11 the Flyers ended defending state champion Anna's 37 match win streak, winning a wild tiebreaker 16-14. Last night they handed host Versailles its first loss in seventeen outings 25-21, 19-25, 25-16, 25-21. Versailles is 43-2 over the past two seasons, their only other blemish coming against Anna in last season's regional final. Speaking of which, Anna had a close call last night against Botkins 21-25, 25-20, 25-23, 28-26. In a clash of titans in Cincinnati, second rated and visiting Mt. Notre Dame handed number one and undefeated Mother of Mercy a 31-29, 25-19, 18-25, 25-27, 15-9 setback, avenging a five game loss to the Bobcats on September 11. Rachel Adams spiked a phenomenal 31 kills, topping her performance in lasts year's state final against Mercy when she hit 24. The Cougars can't rest on their laurels - tomorrow they host undefeated Central power Bishop Watterson and the Eagles are ranked third in the state. Bucking the odds, McAuley won at home against Seton. Having been whacked in game one and down 24-21 in game two, the Mohawks rallied to win 12-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-19. McAuley got their road win on Tuesday, as they nipped Ursuline 25-23, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12 to go 2-0 against the Lions this year. Ursuline took St. Ursula in three last night. It was a rough week for seventh ranked McNicholas. The D-II Rockets lost to unranked Roger Bacon on Tuesday, and to Archbishop Alter last night. Chaminade-Julienne beat Roger Bacon last night and is now three ahead of second place Alter in the GGCL Grey. In a big match up in Cleveland, Padua Franciscan tied up the North Coast League race by knocking off Lake Catholic. In the northwest, Cami Wasserman recorded her 1,000th kill as Kansas Lakota downed Millbury Lake to stay unbeaten in the Southern Lakes League. And Sylvania Northview gave Anthony Wayne its second NLL loss 26-28, 25-13, 25-12, 23-25, 15-12. Bowling Green, whose only loss is to Marion Local, now leads Anthony Wayne by two and Northview by three. Norwalk moved three ahead of third place Upper Sandusky in the Northern Ohio League with a win over the Rams. The Ladies in Blue travel to second place Bellevue next Tuesday for a showdown. On Wednesday, Indian Lake moved into a tie in the Central Buckeye Conference with Urbana by beating the Hillclimbers. Newark Catholic went on the road Tuesday and downed Hebron Lakewood 24-26, 25-19, 18-25, 25-15, 17-15 to avenge a first week five game home loss to the Lancers. The two teams are in a race for third in their division of the Mid State League, what with Heath and Bexley running one-two, respectively. On Monday, visiting Toledo Notre Dame Academy topped Toledo St. Ursula in four. St. Ursula can force a three-way tie for first in the City League if they beat Central Catholic next Monday. 09/26/07 - Huron defeated Port Clinton yesterday for their 500th win in school history. Volleyball began as a sport in 1973, and the Tigers overall record is 500-267. Along the way they’ve notched two state titles and a runner-up in five final four appearances. Huron also beat Wadsworth 25-23, 25-12, 25-17 last Saturday. Lima Central Catholic won three more last week to bring their record to 14-2. The Thunderbirds have won 13 in a row, losing only to top ranked Marion Local and D-II number five Ottawa-Glandorf, both undefeated. And what’s up with Delphos St. John’s? A long time football and boys and girls basketball power, the Blue Jays are unknown in volleyball. But last week they upended Kalida 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 21-25, 16-14, and before that they took St. Henry to five, beat Parkway, and took Lima Central to four. They also scored 63 points against New Bremen in a three game loss and 53 against Versailles. St. Henry, by the way, is an uncharacteristic 4-12, but did push Versailles to four, losing the final game 28-26. Magnificat downed Louisville Holy Cross and Newport Central Catholic to win the second place teams' bracket at Mother of Mercy’s Fall Classic last weekend. Earlier in the week they topped Villa Angela-St. Joseph in four. In that match the Blue Streaks used a swarming defense with Mary Lambert getting 25 digs, and had balanced scoring. Kristen Kidd led with 13 kills, Michelle Matia had 12, Vicky Cichokci added 11, and Michelle Chakirelis chipped in with 10. Kristen DuBroy had 43 assists. Villa Angela, incidentally, has four losses to strong opponents, and their record is eerily similar to the past two years when they went to state (and won in 2005). In other tourney action last weekend, Lehman Catholic won at Piqua, Mentor took the Polar Bear Classic at Massillon Jackson for the second straight year, Shekinah Christian repeated as champs of the Ridgedale Invitational, Independence won their own tournament over Brecksville, Newark Catholic topped Milan Edison at the Golden Spike, and undefeated Marian Pleasant won the Elgin Classic. Mt. Notre Dame and Mother of Mercy tuned up for tomorrow’s GGCL showdown last night with wins over St. Ursula and Seton, respectively. Last weekend Cincinnati Oak Hills gave Mt. Notre Dame fits before succumbing 23-25, 18-25, 25-16, 25-14 15-9. Monday night Shenandoah lost to Monroe Central in a Pioneer Valley Conference showdown. Shenandoah had beaten Buckeye Trail last Thursday in a 25-18, 23-25, 9-25, 25-21, 15-12 thriller. In that match outside hitter and two-time state long jump qualifier Patrisha Stillions was 44 for 44 passing, 8 for 8 in serves and scored 25 kills. Shenandoah meets Buckeye Trail again tonight. And finally, last night Amherst Steele toppled Olmsted Falls to gain a split in their series and a tie for the Southwestern Conference lead.
