Weeks 5 and 6 Highlights - 2009 (Sep. 20 - Oct. 39)

10/8/09 - Tuscarawas Valley shuts down Salem in game five to prevail in contest of unbeaten teams

10/3/09 - Ursuline wins Northeast Ohio Invitational, Marion Local wins PEPSI Lady Knight Invitational

10/3/09 - Cincinnati Ursuline and Lakota West headed to Mentor with unblemished records for this weekend’s Northeast Ohio Invitational. The tournament began in 2007 and Ursuline has won both years. Lakota West topped arch rival Lakota East 25-22, 25-18, 32-30 on Tuesday, while Ursuline beat Cincinnati St. Ursula 25-23, 25-12, 25-15 on Thursday.

Elsewhere around the River City, Mason lost to third place Oak Hills and fell out of a tie for first in the Greater Miami Conference with Lakota West. Mason scored a huge win last week when they beat Seton in five. 

Mansfield Madison avenged a loss to Lexington, leaving both teams in a three-way tie for first with Orrville in the Ohio Cardinal Conference. West Holmes beat Wooster to move into a tie for fourth. The three frontrunners all have to play those two again. 

Wintersville Indian Creek, which lost for the first time to Buckeye Central last weekend, survived a 25-16, 23-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-9 scare against second place Richmond Edison. The Redskins now lead Edison by two in the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference. 

Dalton got past Norwayne on the road 21-25, 26-24, 25-19, 25-23 to stay one match behind Smithville in the Wayne County Athletic League. The Bulldogs and Smithies will meet in the last match of the season.

Frankfort Adena now leads the Scioto Valley Conference by two after beating Huntington. The Warriors are going for their fifth straight undefeated league season.

Archbold and Delta are headed for a showdown next week in the Northwest Ohio Athletic League. Archbold won the Golden Spike last weekend, beating host Holland Springfield, Newark Catholic and Milan Edison. The Bluestreaks topped Kalida on Thursday and are now 14-0. Delta fell to Pemberville Eastwood in their season opener, but has not lost a match or game since.

Eastwood is on track to win the Suburban Lakes League with a 9-0 mark. The Eagles beat second place Tontogany Otsego in five in mid-September and are 14-1, their only loss coming in a tournament to Toledo Central Catholic.

Bowling Green has a two match lead in their quest for a sixth straight Northern Lakes League crown. The Bobcats are in Mentor today for the NEO.

Brecksville and Amherst Steele both beat Olmsted Falls this week to go 9-1 in the Southwestern Conference. They meet at Amherst next Thursday.

Cloverleaf, which was nipped for its first loss by Brecksville 25-23, 26-24 in a tri-match last weekend, is now two ahead of Wadsworth in the Suburban League after the Grizzlies were upset in five by Green.

In Central District, Bishop Ready, which handed West Jefferson its first loss last week, avenged a loss to Bishop Watterson to remain tied for first in the Central Catholic League with Bishop Hartley. Ready edged Hartley 26-24, 25-23, 25-23 on September 22, and the two will meet again at Hartley on October 15.

And in non-league action, Magnificat took down top ranked (D-II) Padua Franciscan 25-20, 25-18, 25-15 on Wednesday.

10/1/09 - Orrville avenged an opening season loss to Lexington last Thursday and then won the Polar Bear Invitation at Massillon Jackson on Saturday, beating Ravenna Southeast in the semifinal and host Jackson for the title. But then they fell at home to Mansfield Madison, dropping into a second place tie in the Ohio Cardinal Conference with the Rams at 7-2. Lexington, which leads at 8-1, will play at Madison tonight.

Beaver Eastern averted its first loss of the season with a 17-25, 27-25, 25-18 comeback over 11-1 Lucasville Valley in a four-team tournament on Saturday.

Bishop Fenwick defeated Archbishop McNicholas on the road in four to go 13-3.

9/29/09 - Dublin Coffman became the first team from Central Ohio in recent memory, if ever, to win Cincinnati Mother of Mercy's Fall Classic. The Shamrocks knocked off Notre Dame Academy (Ky.), Vandalia-Butler and McAuley en route to the title match, where they stopped Cleveland power Magnificat 25-23, 25-11.

Gilmour Academy notched its fifth straight win, handing visiting Villa Angela-St. Joseph its third loss of the season 25-18, 25-21, 25-12. The Lancers balanced attack was instrumental as Mary Kramer lead with eight kills followed by Brittany Link's seven (along with 10 assists), Maddie Kosar's five, and Maria Cup, Taylor Vala and Megan Deimer who combined for seven. Meghan Kramer added five blocks. Alex Walters lead with 12 assists and Sarah Seidlak had 18 digs.

9/28/09 - Smithville tops Dalton, takes sole possession of first place in WCAL

9/27/09 - Top ranked (D-III) Tuscarawas Valley knocked off third ranked (D-II) Salem 28-26, 22-25, 25-l6, 21-25, 15-5 today in a battle of undefeated teams. Tusky Valley middle hitter Sarah Brown and Salem Ohio State basketball recruit and outside hitter Amy Scullion took turns ending volleys through four sets, but Brown hammered seven points in the tiebreaker and terminated a short set by Gabbie Davis that ended the match.

Gilmour (11-1) avenged its only loss of the season Thursday night in a hotly contested match at a raucous Berkshire (11-2) gymnasium, 27-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-21. The Lancers overcame 21 hitting errors and nine service mistakes, and overcame Badger leads in each of their victories. Plain Dealer and News-Herald Player-of-the-Week senior Mary Kramer paced the Lancers with 27 digs and 15 kills. Junior setter Brittany Link added three blocks, 14 kills, and 22 assists. Sophomore Maria Cup had 7 kills, 3 blocks and senior libero Sarah Seidlak dug 24 attacks and was 23-26 in serve-receive.

Bishop Hartley defeated Bishop Watterson 25-20, 25-20, 25-20, dropping the Eagles into third place in the Central Catholic League. Hartley remains tied with Bishop Ready for first.

9/26/09 - John Buck recorded his 300th win Thursday when Toledo St. Ursula nipped Toledo Notre Dame Academy 25-20, 25-15, 20-25 28-30, 15-12.

Mother of Mercy held a tri-match last weekend in which their opponents made history. Lakota West won the tri, and moved to 10-0 for its best start ever. Harrison beat the host Bobcats, and that's the first time they've ever done that.

9/25/09 - Mt. Notre Dame displays depth at Walsh Jesuit Tri-Match

9/25/09 - Huron handed Edison its first loss, 21-25, 25-16, 13-25, 28-26, 15-9 and moved into a tie for first in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Edison had survived a battle with Clyde 27-25, 25-23, 17-25, 30-32, 15-12 on Tuesday.

Ursuline topped Mt. Notre Dame but got pushed 22-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-22. The Lions now own first place in the GGCL.

Newark Catholic handed Heath (13-1) its first loss 25-18, 25-23, 27-25, and took sole possession first in their Division of the Mid-State League. Logan Elm broke a tie for first in another division by beating Canal Winchester. Unbeaten West Jefferson leads the small school division of the league.

Salem and Tuscarawas Valley remained undefeated for their showdown this Saturday.

Last Thursday Shelby gave Norwalk its first Northern Ohio League loss 22-25, 25-22, 25-17, 11-25, 17-15. This Tuesday, Norwalk did the same to Tiffin Columbian to move back into a first place tie with the Tornadoes. Shelby is third at 5-2.

9/23/09 - Division III schools take note. It's only Wednesday morning and Bishop Fenwick has already had a busy and very productive week. On Monday the Falcons beat Division I Centerville in a marathon 20-25, 18-25, 27-25, 25-22, 15-4 match that ended after 10pm. Last night they knocked off #13 Roger Bacon (ranked first in Cincinnati in Division II-IV by the Cincinnati Enquirer) 25-22, 20-25, 25-20, 25-19. Fenwick is now 11-3, with all losses coming at the Louisville Invitational.

Alyssa Beck paced the Falcons on Monday with 24 kills, and she and Chelsea Farrell had 12 apiece last night. Against Centerville Kristin Thompson recorded five aces, Abby Cramer 14 kills and Chelsea Byrge 47 assists. Kramer registered eight blocks last night and Beck totaled 38 digs over both matches.

Top ranked (D-IV) Marion Local took one big step toward a Midwest Athletic Conference title last night with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-17 win over second rated St. Henry. Alyssa Winner paced the offense with 16 kills, while she, Megan Schaefer Alyse Bergman combined for 49 digs. Casey Heitkamp and Margaret Wuebker tallied nine total blocks, Kaylee Schaefer was 31 for 33 serving with two aces and Shelby Moeller and Stacey Huber put up 32 assists.

Versailles beat New Knoxville to keep pace in the MAC title race.

Smithville broke a tie for first in the Wayne County Athletic League with a 27-25, 25-20, 25-17 win over Dalton. Jenna Pew, who recently spiked her 1000th kill and also committed to Wheeling Jesuit University, led the attack with 25 kills, while contributing 19 digs, 13 assists, four blocks and two aces. Hannah Rehm put up 32 assists, libero Jessi Hartzler led the defense with 21 digs and Alex Leister chipped in with 15 digs and 11 kills.

Dalton has no seniors and could only slow Pew down, but junior Samantha Clark and sophomore Audrey Metzger scored several block kills, and the scrappy Bulldogs led 24-23 in game one and were tied at 20 in game two.

Cincinnati Ursuline has been putting up some scary results and for the third match in a row the Lions held a GGCL opponent to under ten points in a game last night with a 25-17, 25-8, 25-15 win over McAuley. Ursuline, which will take on Mt. Notre Dame tomorrow, is 29-1 in games. The Lions handed Toledo St. Ursula its first loss on Saturday, 25-19, 25-18.

Lexington finished the first round of the Ohio Cardinal Conference at 7-0 with a road win over West Holmes. The Minutemen take on second place Orrville tomorrow. Third place Mansfield Madison beat Wooster last night.

Elsewhere, Bishop Ready knocked off Bishop Hartley 26-24, 25-23, 25-23 to force a virtual three-way tie with Bishop Watterson in the Central Catholic League.
