Week 5 Highlights - 2005

Week of Sep. 24-30

09/30/05 - Last night New Knoxville did something very few volleyball teams have ever accomplished, knocking off St. Henry twice in five days, this time by a 17-25, 29-27, 27-25, 22-25, 15-7 score. Both teams have one loss in the MAC.

In other action, Alter beat McNicholas and Marion Local toppled Versailles. McAuley made it six straight wins with a 25-17, 23-25, 25-17, 25-27, 15-10 victory over Ursuline. Mt. Notre Dame nipped Mercy, while Seton avenged an earlier loss to St. Ursula.

Kings defeated Hamilton Badin, as senior libero Julia Horvat collected 18 digs. Also key to the Knights victory were senior setter Ashley Seuberling and hard-hitting freshman outside Logan Shircliff.

Newark Catholic is now 16-0. The Green Wave won Holland Springfield's Golden Spike tournament last weekend, nipping Oregon Clay in the semifinal and Norwalk St. Paul in the title match. Middle hitter Sarah Clapper was named tournament MVP.

Shekinah Christian won the Ridgedale Invitational beating host Ridgedale in pool play, and Delaware Christian for the title.

CORRECTION - In an article on the Mercy Fall Classic it was stated that McAuley outside Kristen White was a senior. She is a junior.

09/29/05 - McAuley topples state ranked opponents to win Fall Classic

09/27/05 - In more news from last weekend,  Marion Local won the Minster Invitational, taking host Minster in the championship. Middle blocker Jenna Barhorst was named MVP, and outside hitter Stephanie Brunswick and setter Maria Moeller were named to the all-tournament team.  Barhorst had 23 kills on the day, Brunswick had 12 aces with her jump serve and Moeller dished out 40 assists.

New Knoxville advanced to the finals of their invitational with wins over Indian Lake and Fort Loramie. Then the Rangers shocked St. Henry for the championship 27-25, 18-25, 15-7. The teams will meet again this Thursday in their league match.

Toledo Christian upped their record to 14-0 as they won Toledo Bowsher’s Rebel Classic, toppling Pemberville Eastwood in the title match.

Sidney Lehman also upped their record to 14-0, beating host Piqua in the final of their tournament. The Cavaliers beat Oakwood in the semifinal.

Toledo Central Catholic bested Bishop Watterson in a quad 26-24, 25-13.

North Union won the Marysville Quad, avenging their only loss in the process with a win over Buckeye Valley.

Albany Alexander won a single match over Washington Court House in a showdown between undefeated teams 25-20, 25-11, 25-20. Court House is undefeated in their league, having beaten Wilmington on Thursday, led by 12 kills from Ashley Pepper.

In Monday action, McComb surprised Arlington (11-2) 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 in a Blanchard Valley Conference match.

09/25/05 - McAuley defeated host Mother of Mercy 14-25, 25-19, 15-13 to win the Fall Classic for the fourth time, ending a four year lock on the title by Kentucky schools. The Mohawks, who were led by junior outside Kristen White and sophomore middle Rachel Krabacher, and defender Kristin Ruffing, also won in 2000, 1999, and 1986. Walnut Hills nipped Chaminade-Julienne for third 25-23, 27-25.

Kentucky schools had won the last four titles.
