Week 6 Highlights - 2004 Week of Oct. 9 10/10/04 - Lutheran West remained unbeaten as they beat Shaler (Pa.), Westlake and Medina (Longhorns pull together and finish day undefeated, Cleveland Plain Dealer, by Bob Fortuna). Bishop Hartley handed Ben Logan their first loss 25-18, 19-25, 15-12. Hartley and Ben Logan both defeated Big Walnut. Cincinnati Walnut Hills used two comebacks to give Findlay their first defeat 14-25, 25-22, 19-17. Game one was close early and then the Trojans ran away with it. Findlay led a good part of game two until Walnut Hills went on a long run to go ahead 22-18. Walnut Hills came back from 14-10 in the tiebreaker. Perrysburg won a high scoring game over Archbold; after taking game one 25-20, the Yellow Jackets need 38 points to win game two and the match. That's right, Perrysburg over Archbold 38-36! St. Henry won Chaminade-Julienne's tri-match, beating their hosts 25-23, 21-25, 15-10. Oregon Clay beat Bellevue for the second time this year, then topped Toledo Notre Dame to win their own invitational. In the Cleveland area, Olmsted Falls won Grafton Midview's Cannon to go to 19-0. Solon topped Walsh Jesuit 25-17, 25-17, 12-25, 25-18. Windham won a big road match over Mogadore Field 25-19, 11-25, 25-17, 20-25, 15-10 to go 13-1 in the Portage County League. In a match between Dayton area Division III powers Versailles beat Oakwood (17-3) 25-18, 25-18, 25-9. Jackson Center topped Covington 25-13, 20-25, 25-13, 25-19 behind sophomore Kristi Platfoot with 13 kills and 7 blocks, junior Catie Halberstadt with 13 kills and 29 digs, and, senior setter Cara Metz's 38 assists. Kings beat Anderson and Princeton to advance to 17-1. Tuscarawas Valley topped Buckeye Trail and Tuscarawas Central Catholic in a tri-match. 10/8/04 - Convoy Crestview Lady Knight Pepsi Invitational article 10/8/04 - Mercy beat Mount Notre Dame 25-21, 25-22, 27-25 to move a step closer to the GGCL title (A return to glory on Bobcat's minds, Cincinnati Enquirer, by Tom Groeschen). St. Ursula won again, this time nipping Seton 22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-23. The Bulldogs have struggled this year, but may be peaking at the right time. Ursuline topped McAuley, and in Division II Roger Bacon walloped Purcell-Marian to go 18-1. Fort Recovery surprised Marion Local 20-25, 25-19, 25-12, 17-25, 15-9. The Indians were led by sophomore Tiffany Gaerke who had 23 kills and 8 blocks. Gaerke was MVP at Convoy Crestview's tournament last weekend. Sidney Lehman handed Jackson Center their second loss 27-25, 19-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-12. Jessica Butt led the Cavaliers with 19 kills and 9 aces. These teams met in last year's Southwest regional and an encore is possible, although Fairlawn, who has split with Jackson Center, may have other ideas. Monica Renner served 11 aces and Jenny Halterman hammered 14 kills to lead Fairbanks over Marion Catholic. Eaton gave Oakwood their second loss 25-18, 22-25, 24-26, 25-23, 15-12. 10/6/04 - In the GGCL last night, Mount Notre Dame beat Ursuline 23-25, 25-14, 25-15, 25-19, while Seton topped Mercy 25-9, 17-25, 25-21, 28-26. Roger Bacon traveled to Louisville where they beat a determined Louisville Mercy team. Bacon won the first two games with little problem, 25-15, 25-17. In the third game the Spartans had difficulty passing, while Mercy played excellent defense and won 25-20. Bacon started slowly in game four but corrected their passing midway through and used strong serving to pull away to 25-19 victory. On Monday, Toledo St. Ursula squeezed past Toledo Central Catholic 25-18, 23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-11 before a crowd of around 1800 (St. Ursula outlasts Central in showdown, by Steve Junga, Toledo Blade). Notre Dame out dueled Toledo Whitmer 25-27, 25-21, 25-14, 18-25, 15-12 In close matches elsewhere, Elyria Catholic nipped Trinity in three 25-22, 25-23, 29-27. while Sidney Lehman won in five over Anna 25-16, 23-25, 22-25, 25-9, 15-12. Walnut Hills stopped upset-minded Colerain 25-21, 25-23, 25-20.
