Week 6 Highlights - 2005

Week of Oct. 1-7

10/05/05 - Bloom Carroll took a two game league lead over Canal Winchester with a pressure packed 25-21, 27-29, 28-26, 25-22 victory last night. Meghan Simons led the Bulldogs' offense with 30 kills, Ashley Hughes had 51 assists and Casey Thomas 20 digs. Katie Kreutz and Sarah Kelly teamed up for 30/30 serving, and Kelly and Hughes each had five blocks.

Wauseon and Toledo Christian also won key league match ups, over Patrick Henry and Cardinal Stritch, respectively (see links to Toledo Blade articles under Newspaper Articles).

Copley beat Wadsworth for the second time this season to go 10-1 in the Suburban League, and Elyria encored an earlier win over Strongsville to move two games ahead of the Mustangs in the Pioneer Conference. 

In non-league matches, Sidney Lehman topped Anna on Monday and New Bremen on Tuesday, and Chaminade-Julienne nipped Dayton Carroll. Shekinah Christian tripped up Jonathan Alder 25-23, 25-21, 16-25, 22-25, 15-13.

Winners of nine straight matches, McAuley will close out their regular season against one of the toughest lineups in the country. The Mohawks will face Seton, Cincinnati St. Ursula, Mt. Notre Dame and, finally, Roger Bacon who is ranked #3 in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com.

10/05/05 - Cincinnati Turpin pulled off a big 21-25, 18-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-11 comeback at Kings. The win gives the 5-0 Spartans the FAVC-A crown over 5-1 Kings. In three hard fought GGCL matches, it was Mt. Notre Dame over Seton, McAuley over Mercy, and Ursuline topping St. Ursula. Lakota West won a showdown of league unbeatens with Lakota East, and in the FAVC-B Mason knocked off Harrison.

Bucyrus Wynford middle hitter Jenny Slone set the school record for kills in a match twice in ten days. On September 24 she had 27 against Johnstown Northridge, and on October 3 Slone broke her own record with 34 versus Crestline, as Shauna Rowland chipped in with 17.

Huron swept 3 matches at their quad: Huron over Canton McKinley 25-20, 25-13; Huron over Defiance 28-26, 25-20; and, Huron over Westlake 25-17, 25-21. The Tigers were led by the trio of Julia Butler with 63 assists, Sara Sage with 28 kills and 5 blocks and Susie Isphording with 20 kills, all on the day. Defiance's Rachelle Haggerty had 21 kills.

Frankfort Adena won a tri-match at Washington Court House on Saturday, nipping the host Blue Lions 24-26, 25-19, 15-13.

10/03/05 - Roger Bacon took down two more powerful Division I schools last weekend, beating Seton and Lakota West in tough two game matches. Seton nipped Lakota West 22-25, 25-23, 15-13. Reading edged Fairborn to go 13-2. McAuley beat Colerain and Harrison, extending their win streak to eight.

In Central District, Worthington Christian almost pulled off another huge comeback before falling to Bishop Watterson 25-16, 25-15, 23-25, 19-25, 15-11. Westerville South, who plays Watterson on October 15, moved to 15-0. Newark Catholic defeated Chaminade-Julienne 25-17, 25-17, 23-25, 25-21. And North Union is 14-1 after winning the Triad Invitational. The Wildcats toppled defending champ Urbana in the semifinal and Jonathan Alder in the title match.

Elsewhere, New Knoxville won the Lima Shawnee Invitational, easing past Minster in the final. Huron, who beat Margaretta in a key league match last Tuesday, knocked off Westlake, Defiance and Canton McKinley in their own quad. Riverdale won the Falcon Quad hosted by Firelands.

Turning to the Northeast, Villa Angela-St. Joseph won in three tough games over Girard. Last Tuesday Aimey Reynolds had 16 kills and 20 digs to lead Wadsworth over Green.  And on September 24, Hubbard won their own tournament, beating Amherst Steele in the title match.

10/02/05 - Sidney Lehman subdued a determined Old Fort squad to win the Convoy Crestview Lady Knight Pepsi Invitational. Always a top small school tourney, this year's edition featured six ranked teams. Fort Recovery toppled Indiana 3A power Fort Wayne Concordia for third and host Crestview nipped Marion Local for fifth (see Tourney Results).

Kettering Fairmont defeated Dayton Carroll, Celina and McNicholas and won their quad.

Toledo St. Ursula survived a scare from Archbishop Alter and came back to win 23-25, 12-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-12.

Solon defeated Elyria and Mentor in the Elyria Quad.

Cincinnati Ursuline won the Wooster quad, beating Magnificat and Cincinnati Oak Hills in addition to the host Generals.
