10/16/05 - In a match up between 7th ranked teams, Division IV Convoy Crestview scored an impressive 25-19, 25-19, 25-10 win over Division III Mohawk. Leading the Lady Knights were Courtney Springer with 14 kills, Jamie Perkins 18 digs and Morgan Hicks three aces.

Mt. Notre Dame traveled to Stow where they successfully defended their title from last year. But the Cougars got a big challenge from last season's northeast state semifinalist Wooster in the final, winning 25-23, 26-24. If these teams are to meet again, it will be in the state final.

Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary nipped Shekinah Christian and Kidron Central Christian in a tri-match.

In Central District, Bishop Watterson turned their week around as they toppled previously undefeated Westerville South 25-20, 28-26, and followed up with wins over Big Walnut and Centerburg. The Eagles had lost to Bishop Hartley and Worthington Christian earlier in the week.

Bloom Carroll downed Circleville to wrap up a perfect 22-0 mark. The Bulldogs were led by Meghan Simons 20 kills, 5 blocks; Ashley Hughes 22 assists, 5 kills; and, Katie Kreutz 24/24 serving, 9 digs.

In action earlier in the week, Buckeye Central tripped up Wynford to clinch the North Central Conference title.

Eastern Brown defeated Fayetteville 25-12, 25-9, 25-10 to capture its 55th straight victory in the Southern Hills League, and its fourth straight Gold Volleyball for an undefeated league season.  Junior Heather Koehler had 17 kills, senior Brittany Hesler added 15 kills and 6 aces, and junior Emily Hammons had 24 assists in the win.

Sylvania Northview downed Perrysburg 27-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, and thereby knocked the Yellow Jackets out of the NLL title picture. The Lady Kats travel to Bowling Green on October 18 for the league showdown.

Dayton Carroll won the Mid-Miami League big school tournament, beating Oxford Talawanda in the final 25-13, 25-23. Leading hitters were Gretchen Van Der Sluijs from Carroll and Talawanda's Jessie Stephenson.

Sidney Lehman closed out at 22-0 with a 25-23, 25-20, 17-25, 25-13 win over Piqua.

In the MAC, Versailles defeated Coldwater, and New Knoxville took Parkway, both in four.

Jackson Center squeaked past Ft. Loramie 25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 25-22, 17-15, paced by Kristi Platfoot with 19 kills and seven blocks, and Catie Halberstadt with 26 digs.

Tiffin Columbian junior setter/outside hitter Megan Florence entered the state record book for service aces in a match twice this week. On Tuesday she registered 10 service aces in a 5-game match with Shelby, and on October 13 she served up 13 more in a 3-game match with Upper Sandusky.

10/14/05 - Toledo St. Ursula won the City League title by nipping Toledo Central Catholic 14-25, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 17-15 in a match the Toledo Blade said may have been the best ever played between the schools (see link to Toledo Blade article under Newspaper Articles).

Defiance knocked Ottawa-Glandorf from the ranks of the unbeaten 28-30, 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 15-10.

In the GGCL, Ursuline played the role of spoiler by bumping Seton 28-26, 25-20, 15-25, 15-25, 15-11, knocking the Saints out of title contention. Mt. Notre Dame beat McAuley and won the Scarlet Division outright.

New Knoxville defeated Parkway to keep their MAC title hopes alive.

10/13/05 - Wynford captured a hard fought win on Tuesday over Colonel Crawford 28-30, 27-25, 25-21, 25-19. The Royals also beat New Riegel last weekend. Jenny Slone pounded home 38 kills while Shauna Rowland added 41 kills in the two matches. Rowland was a perfect 33 of 33 serving with 4 aces combined. The Royals travel to Buckeye  Central tonight where a win would give them a shot at a tie for the NCC title.

Marion Elgin overpowered North Union 25-18, 25-16, 25-15 Tuesday to take sole possession of first place in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Red. North Union had beaten the Comets in three last month, but the combination of outside hitters Amanda Worstell and Jocelyn Ute was too much for the Wildcats this time around.

10/12/05 - Bishop Hartley defeated Bishop Watterson 25-16, 25-18, 25-27, 25-18 to win their first Central Catholic League title in over 10 years. It was the Hawks' second win this season over last year's Division I regional finalist. The Hawks were lead by sophomore outside Teresa Trucco and senior Shannon Keebaugh. Hartley has the 2nd seed in the Central District and is the top seed in the Hilliard #2 District.

Bloom Carroll clinched the Mid-State League title with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 win over Teays Valley. Ashley Hughes led with 30 assists and four blocks while Meghan Simons had 15 kills and four blocks.

Washington Court House moved to 11-0 in the South Central Ohio League as they beat London 25-13, 25-18, 25-18. Ashley Pepper had six ace serves, and she and Morgan Mace combined for 13 kills.

Elsewhere in Central District, Westerville South moved to 18-0 with a win over Central Crossing. The Wildcats will face Watterson, Big Walnut and Centerburg in their quad this Saturday.

Hilliard Davidson tripped up Thomas Worthington 25-23, 25-19, 25-27, 28-26 on Monday to tie the Cardinals for the Ohio Capital Conference lead. Worthington had two earlier wins over Davidson, both tough matches. One was for the championship of Davidson's Sharon M. Huesman Tournament.

McAuley "played with real passion tonight" according to one of their fans, and the result was a 25-9, 25-20, 25-23 victory over Cincinnati St. Ursula. Junior hitters Kristen White and Allison Bartisch, along with sophomore outside Rachel Krabacher, played tough at the net, and aggressive defense and strong serve-receive play by libero Kristen Meister and defenders Jamie Cooper and Kristen Ruffing helped McAuley fend off the Bulldogs.

Last weekend St. Ursula finished 4-1 at St. Charles, Illinois, their only loss a 17-25, 25-23, 15-17 squeaker to nationally ranked Napierville Central.

Elsewhere in the GGCL, Ursuline surprised Mount Notre Dame 16-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-22. Meanwhile, Seton eked out a 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 24-26, 16-14 at Mother of Mercy, to move into a first place tie with Mt. Notre Dame in the GGCL Scarlet.

Things could get a bit wild in Cincinnati on Thursday, as Seton plays at Ursuline and Mt. Notre Dame travels to McAuley.

Roger Bacon wrapped up the GGCL Grey with a convincing 25-11, 25-20, 25-10 road win over Archbishop Alter. The Spartans, ranked 1st in Ohio and 3rd nationally, excelled at every facet of the game: setting, Katie Veatch; hitting, Heather Hausfeld; libero, Vicki Auer; and, serving Lauren Newton. Kelsey Rose, Jaime Frey and Katie Westerfeld played superbly all around.

Emily Borchers led Alter's attack. The Knights had difficulty scoring more than one point at a time, while Roger Bacon had runs of eight, five and six (twice) in games one, two and three, respectively. Alter's longest rally all evening was four, and it was fitting that Amanda Kaylor served the run, since she is Alter's lone senior and it was Senior Night.

Elsewhere, Jackson Center knocked off 8th ranked Division III Anna 25-19, 25-19, 24-26, 25-22. Senior outside hitter Catie Halberstadt had a big night with 18 kills and 21 digs.

Vandalia-Butler moved two games ahead of Centerville in the Greater Western Ohio Conference with a hard fought 25-15, 21-25, 27-25, 25-19 win over the Elks.

St. Henry just barely stayed in first place in the MAC as they survived a 25 kill, 16 dig performance from Tiffany Gaerke and eked out a dramatic come from behind road win over Fort Recovery 18-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23, 18-16. Marion Local kept pace with the Redskins by beating New Bremen. And New Knoxville eased past Minster 20-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-10 to stay in the running. All three contenders have just one league loss.

Marion Local plays New Knoxville on October 18, and the loser of that will be out of title contention - maybe! St. Henry can clinch a share of the title if they win at Minster on Thursday. New Knoxville will have to win at Rockford Parkway on Thursday to remain in first.

Now, if Minster and Parkway beat St. Henry and New Knoxville, respectively, on Thursday and New Knoxville defeats Marion Local next week.......a three way tie is still possible!

Speaking of Parkway, the Panthers got no rest last night losing to Versailles 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 after dropping a four game match to Sidney Lehman on Monday. What a schedule!

In the northwest, Toledo St, Ursula and Toledo Central Catholic advanced to the City finals with wins over Toledo Notre Dame Academy and Oregon Clay, respectively.

Mohawk topped Hopewell-Loudon 9-25, 25-21, 25-22, 14-25, 15-9 to stay one game behind Old Fort in the Midland Athletic League. However, the Stockaders clinched a tie for the league title by beating Seneca East. Ironically, Old Fort and Mohawk will meet in a non-league match next Monday. The Stockaders won their league meeting in late September 25-13, 25-20, 21-25, 20-25, 16-14.

Bowling Green beat Perrysburg last night to force a three way tie with the Yellow Jackets and Sylvania Northview. The Bobcats were trailing 2 games to 1 and up 5-2 in game four when Perrysburg subbed a JV player who had already played in five games, thereby forfeiting the game. Bee Gee won the tiebreaker 15-7. Perrysburg meets Northview on Thursday.

Columbus Grove moved into sole possession of first in the Putnam County League by winning a cliff hanger over 2004 Division IV state semifinalist Kalida 25-18, 23-25, 25-14, 27-29, 15-10.

Defiance blew open a close match in game four with Celina, winning 25-23, 25-21, 23-25, 25-12. The Bulldogs will host undefeated Ottawa-Glandorf on Thursday in a showdown for the Western Buckeye League title.

In the northeast, Solon nipped Stow 21-25, 25-11, 16-25, 25-22, 15-13. Sophomore Kayla Jeter had 10 kills and eight blocks.

Walsh Jesuit rebounded from last weekends' loss to Villa Angela-St. Joseph by toppling Massillon Jackson, the winner of last weekends' Federal League Championship. Katie Dull pounded out 18 kills and added eight blocks for Walsh.

And talk about cliff hangers. Last Thursday, Wooster clinched the Ohio Cardinal Conference with a heart stopping 25-21, 25-27, 26-28, 27-25, 19-17 home win over Mansfield Madison.

10/11/05 - Jonathan Alder defeats neighboring rival Fairbanks (match played on 10/06)

10/09/05 - Convoy Crestview toppled New Knoxville 25-22, 19-25, 15-12 to win the Ft. Jennings Tri-Match. Courtney Springer led the attack with 15 kills and was 22 for 22 serving with three aces. Shea Dietrich chipped in with 10 kills and Alisha Etzler had 19 assists.

Archbishop Alter returned from the La Porte (Ind.) Invitational with the Silver Bracket title after dropping an opening round match on Friday to host La Porte 31-33, 25-16, 10-15. La Porte was ranked 7th in Class 4A, which is the biggest school category in the state. The Knights defeated Mishawaka Marian (9th Class 3A) and Elkhart Memorial (9th in 4A) on Saturday. On the weekend, Emily Borchers and Sarah Fisher led the attack with 35 and 31 kills, respectively. Kacie Hausfeld had 116 assists. Defensively, Katie Laravie had 36 digs, and Lauren Woeste chipped in with 31. All five players are juniors.

In the northeast, Dalton upended Kidron Central Christian 25-23, 26-24, only to be stunned by Akron Manchester 29-27, 21-25, 16-14. Kidron beat Manchester in the afternoon's finale.
