Week 7 Highlights - 2006

Week of Oct. 7-19

10/17/06 - Justine Raterman, 6’2” setter/outside hitter for Versailles, has been selected as WHIO (Dayton) Television 7's "Athlete of the Week".  The station will videotape a plaque presentation at practice today, and will also film the team practicing. It is unknown when the segment will air.

10/14/06 - Hubbard won Canal Fulton's tri-match today (see Article). Big Walnut won the Westerville South Quad, beating Centerburg, Bishop Watterson and South. Bucyrus Wynford won their tri-match, taking down Marion Harding and Elgin.

In action Thursday, Anna and Versailles wrapped up undefeated seasons. The top two teams in Division III will clash in the southwest regional final, barring any surprises of course. Versailles' record is all the more impressive because the Tigers are members of the MAC and had to play Marion Local, New Knoxville, Fort Recovery, Coldwater, and St. Henry which had won 13 titles in a row.

Anna, meanwhile, won Sidney Lehman's tournament, beating Hopewell-Loudon and Frankfort Adena, and later in the year beat Lehman as well. The Rockets also beat Marion Local and Fort Recovery.

Sylvania Northview downed Bowling Green for the second time this season, 25-22, 17-25, 25-22, 25-22, to move into a tie for first in the NLL with the Bobcats. Each team has one league match left. Bee Gee hosts Anthony Wayne next week while Northview travels to Holland Springfield, a team they had trouble with at home.

In the Mid-Athletic League Mohawk defeated Hopewell-Loudon 25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19. That enabled Old Fort, which beat  Seneca East to finish 9-1, to take the outright league title. Mohawk, Hopewell and Tiffin Calvert all ended at 8-2. Ironically, Old Fort and Mohawk close their seasons out against each other this Monday in a non-league match.

Elyria clinched the Pioneer Conference title with a win over Medina. Since joining the league that bears their nickname, the Pioneers have lost a whopping two games. You read that right - that's two games! They've never lost a league match!

In Central District, the Ohio Capital Conference races are over and the winners are...Upper Arlington who beat Hilliard Davidson twice to go 10-0 in the Buckeye Division; Big Walnut and Dublin Scioto in the Capital Division - they split with each other to go 9-1, with Big Walnut eking out their second meeting 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 14-25, 19-17; Pickerington North in the Central Division - the Panthers still have a match left with Thomas Worthington, a team they barely beat last Thursday 22-25, 25-19, 27-29, 25-15, 19-17, but they've mathematically clinched the title; Worthington Kilbourne over Westerville South in the Cardinal - South gained a split with Kilbourne in the teams' second meeting taking a 25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 23-25, 15-13 decision, but was ambushed by Dublin Jerome on Thursday; and Newark at 9-1 in the Ohio Division - Gahanna-Lincoln beat Newark on Thursday to gain a split, but a 20-25, 24-26, 25-20, 25-20, 18-16 loss on September 19 to Hilliard Darby was Gahanna's undoing.

And in a great match played Wednesday evening, Magnificat overcame a strong Huron squad and won 20-25, 25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 15-10, despite a super spiking and blocking performance by junior hitting sensation Sara Sage. Of course, when top athletes go head to head they bring out the best in each other, and Magnificat's win was helped by super digging and heads up defense from libero Alex Feltes and Ohio State bound defensive specialist Carly Syms.

10/11/06 - Red hot McAuley stunned top ranked Mother of Mercy 25-22, 25-18, 13-25, 25-22 to close out the regular season on a nine match win streak that includes victories over Solon, Ursuline, St. Ursula and Mt. Notre Dame. This result prevented Mercy from gaining sole possession of first in the GGCL over Mt. Notre Dame, which was upended by Ursuline.

In the Toledo City League Championship semifinal, Toledo Central Catholic rallied to take a two hour plus marathon over Toledo Notre Dame Academy 23-25, 17-25, 25-22, 25-19, 15-13. The Irish will meet St. Ursula, who topped Toledo Bowsher, on Thursday.

The Midland Athletic League title picture became jumbled last night as New Riegel shocked Hopewell-Loudon 25-23, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23. Old Fort can now garner at least a share of the crown with a win Thursday, and could win outright if Hopewell falls to Mohawk.

In the northeast, Mentor defeated Lakewood in four to replace them as Lake Erie League champs, while Solon defeated Hudson to take the Western Reserve Conference crown.

10/10/06 - Wadsworth recovered from Saturday's five game loss to Villa Angela-St. Joseph by clinching their first outright Suburban Lakes League crown in 21 years tonight with a 25-21, 26-24, 25-23 win over Copley. The Grizzlies broke away from an 18-all first game tie as setter Emily McMillan served two aces. Outside hitter Marie Mueller scored the game winner with a well placed cross court hit to the opposite line.

Copley took an early lead in game two behind the hitting of Kimmie Dyer and Brittany Leslie. Two aces by Mueller put Wadsworth on top and they eventually took a 24-19 lead, only to have the Indians tie on the serving of outside hitter Jamie Fox. Sophomore middle Kristen Bennett put the Grizzlies back on top with a kill, and then teamed up on a block with senior middle Jen Uhl for the win.

Copley roared to a 9-2 game three edge, led by Dyer and junior outside Lauren Pietz. But Wadsworth slowly pecked away at the lead, tying at 18 on an ace from defender Rachel Figliomeni, and McMillan followed that with a dump. Scoring went back and forth with Aimey Reynolds converting an errant pass into a nice tip for a 23-22 Wadsworth lead. After Dyer retied it with a kill, a long volley ensued which Reynolds terminated with a shot down the left side. Mueller scored match point on a booming block.

In the GGCL, Ursuline defeated Mount Notre Dame 25-19, 25-17, 25-23. That league is wide open, and so will be the Vandalia Regional, with McAuley, Vandalia-Butler and Lakota West also thrown into the mix.

Wyoming clinched an outright Cincinnati Hills League crown over Reading with a win over Finneytown, giving the Cowboys a two match lead with only one left.

Versailles defeated Rockford Parkway to claim the Midwest Athletic Conference title outright, thereby ending St. Henry's incredible run of 13 straight conference championships. Anna took the Shelby County League with a three game win over Fort Loramie.

In the northwest, Wauseon surprised previously unbeaten Evergreen 23-25, 25-23, 25-10, 22-25, 15-12. Evergreen is now tied in the loss column with Archbold (who was surprised by Delta last week 18-25, 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 16-14). Assuming Archbold wins their next league outing, they will play Evergreen for an outright title the last match of the season.

Frankfort Adena topped Unioto to clinch an outright Scioto Valley Conference title over Westfall.

On Monday evening, Bishop Hartley gained a tie for the Central Catholic League, and revenge for a previous loss, with a grueling 25-16, 23-25, 16-25, 25-21, 16-14 comeback win over Bishop Watterson. It was standing room only for the top ranked Division I and II Central District teams, and the lights didn't go off until after 11:00 PM.

The Hawks were led by their three senior captains. Setter Michelle Mangia had 34 assists, 10 kills, 4 blocks and 2 service aces; middle hitter Megan Krebs led in kills with 13 and also had 5 blocks and 2 aces; outside hitter Sarah Harmon contributed 9 kills, 3 blocks and an ace.

10/9/06 - On Saturday night, River View downed Minerva 23-25, 25-17, 25-7, 25-17. The win puts the Bears at 20-0 on the season. River View was paced by senior middle Kristen Daugherty's 19 kills and 7 blocks. Libero Kasey Bowman dug out 22 Lion attacks and Emily Cochran dished out 40 assists. Brittany Bailey, another senior middle, added 10 kills. The Bears clinched their 3rd consecutive ECOL title with a 3-0 win at Claymont on Thursday.

Huron defeated Bellevue and Toledo Notre Dame Academy to win Oregon Clay's Eagle Classic. The Tigers will have their work cut out this week as they host Magnificat on Wednesday and travel to Toledo St. Ursula on Saturday.
