Weeks 7 Highlights - 2007

Oct. 6-15

10/15/07 - Fisher Catholic overtakes Kidron Central Christian with big comeback

Relentless serving and defense helped Magnificat to an easier than expected 25-20, 25-22, 25-11 home win over Toledo St. Ursula on Saturday. The Blue Streaks served the lights out with 21 aces.

Kristen DuBroy, Meghan Curran, Mary Lambert, Kristen Kidd, and Rachel Gulasey each had eight or more digs, while Kidd, Michelle Matia, and Michelle Chakirelis led with nione kills apiece. DuBroy had 36 assists.

Bishop Watterson coasted to straight set quad wins over Centerburg, Big Walnut and host Westerville South.

Wooster won the Stow Invitational, avenging earlier losses to Lake Catholic and Mentor in the process. Kelci Marschall was named tournament MVP and Natalie Phillips made the all-tournament team.

Last Thursday, Bexley avenged its lone loss by handing Heath its first loss in its last match. The two teams tied for their Mid-State League division's title.

Archbold beat Evergreen in three to take the Northwest Ohio Athletic League crown.

10/13/07 - Northwestern finally beats Smithville, wins WCAL title outright

Toledo Notre Dame Academy won the City League for the first time since 1983 with a heart thumping 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 17-25, 15-12 win over Toledo Central Catholic. Based on scores, the teams are about as equally matched as possible. Central won their regular season match 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 22-25, 15-12.

10/11/07 - It's been a big four days for Anderson. On Saturday the Redskins handed sixth ranked in D-II Wyoming its first loss of the season. On Monday they downed a strong Lakota East in five. And the following evening they avenged a heart breaking home loss to Harrison (22-25, 30-28, 29-31, 25-20, 16-14) with an almost as close road win 25-17, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-9 over the Wildcats, leaving the two teams co-champs of the Fort Ancient Valley Conference.

The past four days were, however, rough on Mt. Notre Dame, which lost twice on the road to tough Kentucky powers, and upon returning home, was rudely upended by Ursuline. Meanwhile, Mother of Mercy beat McAuley to capture sole possession of first place in the GGCL Scarlet. Chaminade-Julienne, which had clinched the GGCL Grey awhile back, defeated Archbishop Alter last week and is a win away from a 14-0 league mark.

In the northwest, Bowling Green clinched its fourth straight Northern Lakes League crown with a win over Sylvania Northview. Toledo Notre Dame Academy ousted Toledo St. Ursula from the City League tournament, ending the Arrows' seven year run as champs. The Eagles will take on Toledo Central Catholic, which topped Bowsher Tuesday, in tonight's final.

Also tonight, Archbold and Evergreen will face off for sole possession of the Northwest Ohio Athletic League crown.

Last night Magnificat handed Huron its first loss. The Tigers had beaten Kenston in last weekend's Eagle Invitational at Oregon Clay.

Genoa surprised undefeated Kansas Lakota in five on Tuesday.

Hopewell-Loudon clinched at least a tie for first in the Midland Athletic League with a four game win over previously undefeated New Riegel. Mohawk can create a three way tie if they beat Hopewell tonight.

And last Thursday, Lima Central Catholic defeated Convoy Crestview to finish 9-0 in the Northwest Conference.

In Central, Bishop Hartley lost a chance to tie for the Central Catholic League title when they dropped a 21-25, 25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 18-16 decision to Bishop Watterson.

In key OCC matches, on Tuesday Olentangy Liberty moved into a first place tie in their division by giving Dublin Scioto its first league loss, while last Thursday Dublin Coffman took sole possession of first with a five set win over Hilliard Davidson.

Bexley, with recent five game road wins over Newark Catholic and Hebron Lakewood, can tie visiting Heath for first in the Mid-State League with a win tonight. Unbeaten Heath, however, won their first meeting decisively.

In northeast, Keystone nipped Medina Buckeye 25-17, 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 15-13 on Tuesday and thereby won the Patriot Athletic Conference outright.

10/10/07 - Tuscarawas County teams win league titles
