Destiney Yoder serves ten points as West Holmes stuns unbeaten River View November 5, 2006 By Jim Jicha Destiney Yoder served 10 straight points, including two aces, in game four to give West Holmes a 21-13 lead, and the 20th ranked Knights went on to stun third ranked and unbeaten defending regional champ River View 25-19, 16-25, 25-15, 25-17. Keysha Allison scored four kills during the run, two of them tips into a hole at the net by the left line. With the score 24-17 a spike down the right by Knights' outside hitter Brooke Akins was dug out of bounds, causing coach Jim Park to fling his playbook in the air with papers flying everywhere as he raced to join the bedlam on the court. Park called the win "big time sweetness", and said anybody who only ranked his team 20th never saw them play a strong opponent. About her serving, Yoder said "I was just trying to get it in", adding that her confidence grew as the streak went on and "it gave us momentum, I felt we were going to win." River View drew first blood in the match, as they would in every game, when 6’1” middle Brittany Bailey blocked a dump attempt. But after a hitting error, Allison spiked two kills to give the Knights a 3-1 lead. River View tied at 5 on a kill by 6’1” senior middle Kristin Daugherty and a short serve ace by setter Emily Cochran. West Holmes expanded an 8-7 lead with a five point run when 6’1” sophomore Sarah Hammond broke serve with a kill. Defensive specialist Danie Atherton served the rally, with Allison nailing a spike and two tips. The teams scored a point or two at a time from there, as the Knights increased their lead to 24-16. Outside hitter Chelcee Honabarger kept the Bears alive by winning a duel at the net, but after two Knights’ miscues, a Bears' lift ended the game. River View scored first again in game two on a tip by 6’2” sophomore Kari Daugherty. Allison evened it on a nice tip of a teammate’s pass that came too close to the net. But although she would score seven more kills, the Bears took charge going up 4-1, and after a tie at 6, they took the lead for good. Kristin Daugherty and Bailey led with four kills each, as River View went up 12-8, 15-10 and 20-14. Libero Kasey Bowman served three aces, nailing two straight to end the game. In game three, Honabarger got things going for the River View, but some miscues plus a kill by Allison gave West Holmes a 5-1 lead, and the Knights stayed on top all the way. After River View cut the lead to 10-9, Akins served six straight points, with Hammond and senior outside Markie McDowell leading the charge. River View cut the margin to 19-15, with defensive specialist Samantha Dickerson serving two aces and Bailey adding a kill. West Holmes called a time out, after which Allison spiked a kill off the block. McDowell then served out garnering two aces in the process. Game four started off like the second, with River View in control. The Bears took a 2-0 lead on a tip by Kari Daugherty and a spike from Hanabarger, and they built leads of 5-2 and 9-4. Kari Daugherty blocked Hammond to make it 11-6, but Hammond reposted with a kill. The teams traded miscues, after which Allison nailed a kill and McDowell served an ace. Another exchange of points left River View ahead 13-10, and a four hit call brought Yoder to the line. At this juncture it still looked like River View was in charge with a fifth game in the offing. But things went down hill fast for the Bears. Akins started the winning rally with a kill down the right line that ended a brief but intense volley. Allison slammed a cross court spike through traffic. A Bears’ hit sailed long. Yoder served an ace. River View called a time out, but to no avail, as Yoder served another ace, and Allison blasted a kill to the deep left corner. An error by the Bears, two tips by Allison and a West Holmes block that was dug under the net resulted put West Holmes up 21-13. River View called their second time out, and this one worked with Kristin Daugherty powering a short set from Emily Cochran off a defender’s hand. Momentum is, in my opinion, an overused word in all sports, but West Holmes did have momentum at this point, and Allison came right back with a cross court smash, after which Hammond blocked Daugherty. That made it 23-14, and it was all but over. Daugherty kept her team alive with a hit into a hole, and the Bears added two more points with Kari Daugherty spiking a kill. But a net serve spelled disaster, and Akins delivered the coup de grace. The victory sends West Holmes (24-3) back to the Nutter Center for the sixth time since 1999.
