Bedford Christmas Classic - December 30, 2002

Host Temperance Bedford survived a first game scare to win their own Christmas Classic Monday with a 9-15, 15-3, 15-3 victory over Livonia Ladywood in the championship match. Both teams looked impressive in pool play winning all their matches convincingly in two games. And, except for a second game Ladywood loss to Airport, the two finalists looked unstoppable in the quarter and semi-finals.

Ladywood was led by senior outside hitters Kristen Bachor and Laura Sirgedas who combined for several kills and three service aces. Bachor started the scoring with a smash in game one as Ladywood raced to a 4-1 lead. Bedford closed to 6-7, but Ladywood gradually pulled away for the win.

Game two looked like more of the same as Ladywood jumped out to a 3-1 lead, thanks in part to three Bedford errors. However, the Mules finally got into their game, and began blocking the outsides and passing more effectively. The result was 14 unanswered points, the first on a block by senior setter Jenifer Sulewski, and the last on a double block of a Sirgedas spike by Sulewski and Corey Calcamuggio. In between there were several kills by senior outside hitters Erica Kaczorowski and Courtney Caldwell.

Game three was all Bedford as the Mules kicked out to an 8-0 lead. Ladywood's only points came off Bedford errors. Whereas the first two games featured some 70 sideouts, there were only ten in the finale.
