Fraser survives two close calls, wins Bedford Invitational By Jim Jicha Fraser survived two close calls to win the Bedford Invitational III tournament held Saturday at Temperance Bedford High School. First the Ramblers had to fend off a comeback from Birmingham Marian to win the semifinal. Then they had to pull off two comebacks of their own to beat host Bedford in the final. Fraser had little difficulty in disposing of four opponents in the Pool and Power Pool rounds. They beat Detroit area power Ladywood handily 15-5, 15-4 in the Power Pool final. It seemed there would be no stopping the Ramblers when they trounced Flushing in the quarterfinal and took game one from Marian 15-7. But game two saw Marian dig in their heels as the two teams battled back and forth. With Marian ahead 14-12, Fraser got three points on booming blocks from Katie Price, Angie McGinnis and a double block by McGinnis and Kathleen Gautier. Marian got a service break on an Erin Poglits to Janine Pesusich quick set kill, and tied it on a blast by outside hitter Sarah Kreher. Two service breaks later Kreher scored on another shot after Poglits dug one out of the net. After two more breaks, Kreher smashed home the game point. Game three, which was rally scoring, went much faster which, due to its tenseness, was good for fans wearing pacemakers. The teams traded leads and Marian’s 10-8 margin was the only one exceeding a point until the end. Fraser tied it at 12 on a nice dump by McGinnis, tied it again on a spike by Price, and scored the final two points on a block and a kill through a block by freshman Mary McGinnis. As soon as the semifinal was over, Fraser was in the main gym for the final. Bedford is very good at running their tournaments and moving them along. But adding special urgency for this match was the raging snowstorm that had descended on the Toledo area. Each team had about thirty seconds for a few hits and the match was under way. After a nip and tuck start, an ace by jump server Katie Price led Fraser to a 6-3 lead. Bedford scored six straight points, only to see the Ramblers tie it at 9. Then came four Fraser errors and a block by Rachel Pelhank to give Bedford a 13-9 lead. Aided by Peachy Jankowski’s jump serves, the Ramblers roared back to tie on hits by Angie McGinnis and Liz Pulcini. A block by Lauren Keiser gave Bedford the serve. And after a Rambler spike was out, Erica Kaczorowski hit a smash that went off the top of the net into a hole to give the Mules game one. In game two Fraser took a 5-2 lead on three jump service aces by Angie McGinnis and a spike by Price. (Yes, you read this correctly, Fraser has three jump servers). After Bedford closed to 5-6, the Ramblers pulled away for the win, and their first comeback. The momentum had seemed to go to Fraser, but game three turned out even more frenetic for the Ramblers than in the semifinal. Led by Price’s powerful spiking, the Ramblers got off to a 7-3 lead. But with the score 9-6, Bedford rallied to a 10-9 lead on a kill by Kaczorowski, two Fraser errors and a Kaczorowski ace. Jankowski tied it on a smash, but Bedford setter Jenifer Sulewski responded with a block and a kill to put the Mules up 12-10. The teams traded points, then Bedford went up 14-11 when a Fraser missive sailed out of bounds. Fraser scored on a kill by Pulcini, which also brought Price back to the front court. After a block from McGinnis, Price got a huge kill to tie matters at 14. A spike by Pelhank spike gave Bedford its last lead. And then it was blasts by Price, Price and Price again, with each spike more spectacular than the last one. When the final shot exploded off a blocker's hands into Never Never Land, nervous Fraser fans could relax and prepare for their sojourns home in the peacefully falling snow. (Not). The title match was the only regular season meeting of the year for these two teams. If Bedford and Fraser meet again it will be in the State Semifinal in mid-March. Given the exciting battle they put on Saturday, we can only hope there will be a rematch.
