3/15/03 - Fraser, Marysville are winners in State Title sweep by Southeastern Michigan schools Fraser and Marysville, arch rivals in the tough Macomb Area Conference (MAC) Red Division, came away big winners at yesterday's State Finals in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Fraser claimed their first Class A State Championship by handing top ranked Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern their only loss of the season. Fraser's 9-15, 15-11, 15-4 victory broke the Huskies' 93 match winning streak dating back to last year. Northern, who had beaten the Ramblers four straight times over two years, including twice this season, finished 81-1. The Huskies had played a brutal schedule in amassing their 81 victories. Outside hitter Katie Price and setter Angie McGinnis, both juniors, had outstanding matches for Fraser. Price led both teams with 21 kills. McGinnis had 36 assists, 11 kills and 10 digs. Linsey Taatjes, Michigan's Miss Volleyball, had 14 kills and 7 digs for Northern. Fraser finished the season with a record of 64-3-2. After a brief 8-6 Fraser lead, the Huskies took over game one to win 15-9. But Fraser took a 4-1 lead in game two and led all the way. The Ramblers won going away in game three, which was a reversal of last year's championship match when the Huskies won in three. Marysville, who this season failed to win their league title for the first time in fifteen years, won their seventh straight Class B State Title, beating Fruitport 11-15, 15-10, 15-7. Marysville finished with a 55-2 record. Both losses were to Fraser. Allison Mattox had 20 kills for Marysville and Megan Harrison added 16. Fruitport's Ashley Feutz led both teams with 25. The win gives Marysville coach John Knuth an 861-67 record over 19 seasons. Knuth was the National High School Coaches Association Volleyball Coach of the Year in 2001. The Vikings are 411-5 over the past seven years, and have won 41 regular season tourneys in that time. They won 192 straight matches from 1996-2000. In other State Tournament action, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central topped North Muskegon 15-11, 15-8 to win their first Class C title. St. Mary was led by junior outside hitter Vanessa Cheatham with 15 kills, and junior middle hitter Chelsey Myers who added nine kills and seven digs. Adrian Lenawee Christian won the Class D title by beating Battle Creek St. Philip 15-8, 15-13.
