Michigan Highlights 2002-03

State Tournament highlights

2/23/03 - Bedford Invitational III write-up and results

1/23/03 - Events of Interest in Michigan (matches and tournaments)

1/20/03 - Chelsea recently handed Bedford a league loss in a marathon five game match, 15-17, 15-2, 15-13, 12-15, 15-10. Chelsea has been building their program, and last year made the Class B State Semi-Final. This year they moved up to Class A, so they may provide Bedford a challenge come state tournament time.

Chelsea will participate in an invitational at Bedford on February 8, and we may get to see a rematch before the state tournament. Chelsea is currently undefeated with a 20-0-1 record, and ranked 6th. They have also beaten Adrian. Bedford is 22-5 and ranked 8th.

Second ranked Fraser continued to roll with a big league win last week over tenth ranked and previously undefeated Chippewa Valley, 15-3, 15-10. Chippewa was fresh from beating then undefeated Port Huron Northern 6-15, 16-14, 15-12.

Fraser's overall record is 24-1 with their lone loss to top ranked Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern, 13-15, 15-10, 11-15. This occurred in the championship of the Baden/Lexum Tournament held December 21 at Portage Northern. It was a rematch of last year's State Championship match, also won by Forest Hills in three. The Huskies came up with some stellar defense to thwart Fraser's hitting and the jump serving of Rambler setting sensation Angie McGinnis. Forest Hills' Linsey Taatjes and Emilie York each had five blocks.

Chippewa Valley has their entire team back from last year when they won 34 matches and lost to Port Huron Northern in the regionals. The Big Reds have five players 5-10 or taller, and are lead by middle blocker Jackie Orlando, outside hitter Chelsea Licavoli and setter Stephanie Sills.

Fraser, Chippewa Valley and Port Huron Northern are in the MAC Red conference, one of the toughest leagues in Michigan. While you might think the battle for the league title will come down to one of these teams, Marysville, the lone Class B school in the league, has other plans. The Vikings are currently ranked first in the state and are going for their seventh straight state title. They have won fourteen league titles in a row (six in the MAC Red). Their only league loss in that span came at the hands of Fraser last year when the two teams split to tie for the title.

1/6/03 - Fraser will play in the Bedford Invitational on February 22. Fraser was the Class A State Runnerup in 2002, and Bedford was a State Semi-Finalist. Both teams return five starters from last year. In addition to McGinnis, top players on Fraser include hitters Katie Price and Peachy Jankowski. McGinnis, Price and Toledo St. Ursula's Sarah Florian were among some thirty players from the Toledo-Detroit area selected for a national team prior to their freshmen seasons. Top players on Bedford include setter Jenifer Sulewski and outside hitter Erica Kaczorowski.

One of Bedford's top league opponent is Adrian, led by left handed outside hitter Lindsey Eshelman. The Mules host Adrian on February 6 (the match should be best of five).
