Michigan Highlights 2006-07

03/01/07 - Bedford Invitational results (02/24/07)

In last weekend's Northwood Invitational, Lakeland topped Mercy for the Gold, and Port Huron Northern beat Midland in the Silver. Both matches were 2-0.

02/21/07 - Bedford will host their final tournament of the season this Saturday. Participating schools, with rankings in parentheses, are: Airport, Bedford, Brighton, Delton Kellogg, Divine Child (HM Class B), Fraser (HM Class A), Flushing (HM Class A), Hanover-Horton, L'Anse Creuse, Livonia Ladywood (5th Class B), Marian (7th Class A), Monroe, Mt. Pleasant, Pinckney, Farmington, and Ypsilanti Lincoln. Mt. Pleasant outside hitter is a Miss Volleyball finalist and Michigan State recruit.

02/19/07 - East Kentwood tops Grand Rapids South Christian in clash of #1's

North Branch, ranked number two in Class A, notched another tournament championship, defeating Class C number three Saginaw Nouvel Catholic Central in the Northwood University Invitational Gold final 25-18, 25-19. The Broncos bucked Freeland 25-17, 25-15 in the semifinals, while Nouvel downed Mt. Morris 25-19, 25-8. Bay City Central defeated USA in two games to take the Silver Bracket.

02/13/07 - Saginaw Valley State University Invitational (02/10/07)

North Branch improved to 55-1-1 on the season as they won the Ferris State Invitational last weekend. More importantly, the third rated Broncos defeated second ranked Jenison 25-17, 25-23 in a semi-final meeting of Class A powers.

North Branch played flawlessly in game one to secure a 16-6 lead, and kept pace thereafter. They were up 11-8 in game two when Jenison went on a 10-1 run, threatening to tie the match. But the Broncos recovered nicely, as they cut the margin to 22-18 and then scored seven straight for the win.

North Branch served aggressively and, although they recorded only two aces, this helped keep Jenison out of their system. The Broncos didn’t give much away either with a 47-49 serving tally. They also attacked well, committing only three hitting errors against 24 kills.

Olivia Kohler, named one of top sophomores in the nation by PrepVolleyball.com, had 6 kills, 6 digs and served 11-11 with 8 points. Miss Volleyball candidate and Bowling Green recruit Sam Fish was 45-46 setting with 21 assists, 4 kills, and an ace. Jessica Curtis, Lauren Strich, Rachel Hebberd, and Taylor Miner combined for 14 kills in a balanced attack. The Broncos also had 10 team blocks.

In the final North Branch defeated Class D power Harbor Light Christian 25-13, 25-16.

02/11/07 - Apple Chiropractic Valentine's Day Volleyball Tournament (hosted by Bedford High School)

02/08/07 - Top ranked Grand Rapids South Christian defeated third ranked Fruitport 25-19, 25-15, 25-20 in a Class B showdown that was played in front of over 800 people on a cold night near the shore of Lake Michigan.

Fruitport jumped out to a 9-6 game one lead, but couldn't sustain momentum. South used an eight point run to go up 14-9, and kept that margin the rest of the way. Game two was all South Christian, with a few too many serving errors by Fruitport and steady play by the Sailors sealing the verdict. South Christian jumped out early in game three and held off a late Trojan charge lead by outsides Jackie Geile and Rachel Feutz to close out match at 25-20.

The blocking and spiking of South Christian middle hitter Kendra Potgetter were key factors for the Sailors who also got solid performances from outside hitter and Miss Volleyball finalist Jennifer Skinner and sophomore outside Jordyn Skinner. Fruitport was led by Geile with 11 kills, while sophomore Naomi Bush chipped in with seven. Danielle Brink had 26 assists for the Trojans.

Fruitport Coach Dan Potts summed up the match with praise for the Sailors, saying "They are a steady all-around team that doesn’t get too high or too low emotionally. Coach (Heather) Kwantes does a fine job of leading them".

02/07/07 - Several ranked teams will take part in the Ferris St. invitational this weekend: Class A - Jenison (2), North Branch (3) and Lakeview (10); Class B - Byron Center (8) and Coldwater (9); Class C - Ubly (10); and, Class D - Harbor Light (3) and Beal City (9).

Featured finalists are: Kristen Arthurs (Purdue), middle blocker for St. Mary Catholic Central; Ann Kendzicky (Grand Valley State), middle/outside hitter from Chelsea; Lauren Krupsky (Central Michigan), an outside hitter from Livonia Churchill; and, East Kentwood outside Lauren Jones (Kent State).
