Chaminade-Julienne wins tri-match of momentum shifts By Jim Jicha Yogi Berra would have loved the tri-match hosted on Saturday by Chaminade-Julienne. That's because momentum shifts were the rule of the day. The Eagles fended off charges by Kettering Fairmont to beat the Firebirds 15-11, 13-15, 15-7 in the opener. They mounted a charge of their own to down Sidney Lehman 5-15, 15-13, 15-11 in the final. And in between, Lehman survived comebacks and slipped past Fairmont 15-13, 15-12. Chaminade got off to a big 11-2 margin in the first game with Fairmont, led by junior hitting star Stephanie Ross. But the Firebirds made some defensive adjustments and closed to 11-10, with sophomore Stephani Bennett contributing nice passes to help get their offense in gear. The Eagles finally prevailed, aided by a couple of long Firebird hits. Game two saw Chaminade again go on top 6-1 and 9-4, scoring on blocks by Elaine Marrinan and C Coleman, and a kill by Ross. But the Firebirds came up with another rally, a ten point run that propelled them to game point. Nicole Schairbaum led the comeback with two kills, a block and three service aces. Errors almost undid Fairmont as the Eagles rallied, scoring on a hitting miscue, two hits that were out and a block by Coleman. That made it 14-13 Fairmont. After four sideouts, Schairbaum got a kill to return service to the Firebirds, and when a hit by Ross sailed out, the match was tied. In game three the Eagles again rolled out to a lead, this time 8-1, as Marrinan scored on a tip and an ace, and Ross added three kills. And again Fairmont roared back, closing to 9-7. From this point, Chaminade was able to shut Fairmont out, but the win did not come easily. The Eagles went up 11-7, after which there were 12 sideouts before they finally won. Ross had an outstanding match and some Firebird fans were hoping she was a senior, even to the point of wanting to send her a graduation card. But she is in the Class of 2005, so no cards are necessary. In the second match Sidney Lehman had to contend with the pesky Firebirds and their rallies. The Cavaliers took an 8-4 lead aided by a kill from Ashley Newcomer, a double block by Newcomer and Claire Gutmann and two jump serve aces from Jessica Butt. The Firebirds then scored six straight points, thanks to some nifty defensive play, and kills by Katy Broom and Schairbaum. The teams traded points until Fairmont led 13-12. Lehman tied it on a Fairmont hitting error. Butt made a nice pass on a Firebird spike to keep the ball in play, and the Cavaliers scored when the next Firebird spike was out. Newcomer’s kill ended the game. In game two Lehman jumped out to a 5-1 lead, only to see Fairmont tie it at 5. Lehman scored four more in a row only to see Fairmont, led by Ashley Gan and Schairbaum, score seven straight. Gan had a one handed save and a kill while Schairbaum served all seven points, scoring three aces in the process. This gave Fairmont a 12-10 lead. But the Cavaliers were not to be denied. A smash by Butt was blocked out of bounds for the sideout. On the next play Butt scored on a tip after a great dig by Newcomer. An errant Firebird hit tied it. There followed four sideouts, during which Gutmann spiked a cross court kill off a slide and Gan responded with a spike that rolled off the net onto Lehman’s floor. A service error gave the sideout to Lehman. Freshman Emilee Seger turned a Fairmont smash into a great pass and Newcomer put the Cavaliers on top with a kill. Two hitting errors by Fairmont ended matters in favor of the Cavaliers. The third match featured the biggest comeback of the day. Lehman won the first game and was up 13-5 in the second when the Eagles rallied for ten straight points to force a third game. The Eagles soared to a 6-1 lead in the finale, only to see Lehman rally to a 9-7 lead. The Eagles finally prevailed 15-11, giving them two victories for the day over strong opponents. And everyone who was there went home repeating Yogi's famous line, “the game ain’t over until its over”.
