Kilbourne takes control in the OCC with win over Coffman By Jim Jicha April 29, 2004 Worthington Kilbourne took sole possession of first place in the OCC tonight with a 25-21, 28-26, 25-13 road win over Dublin Coffman. The Wolves have had a big week, starting last Thursday when they toppled Gahanna and continuing last weekend when they knocked off Scioto, Coffman and Stow to win the Pickerington Central Tournament. Game one was very close with the teams exchanging leads several times. Led by the hitting of Alex Kamenetskiy, Nick Baehr and Kevin Lookabaugh, Kilbourne would take charge, only to have Coffman's Brian Johnson and David Frost put the Rocks on top. It went this way much of the game. A spike by Lookabaugh that was blocked back over the net out of bounds put the Wolves up 18-16, but Coffman went back on top on a kill by Ross Armstrong, an errant spike and a block by setter Matt LeVan. Another Lookabaugh smash tied it, but Frost tipped a bad Kilbourne pass into a hole to make it 20-19 Rocks. Unfortunately for the home crowd two errors by Dublin put Kilbourne back on top for good, and Kamenetskiy and Lookabaugh put the game away. Game two looked like a replay with the teams again trading several leads with nobody able to establish momentum. Dublin went up 11-8, but Chris Warner scored on two aces to tie it at 11, the first landing at the back line and the second just clearing the net and dropping straight to the floor. Dublin Co-Captain Brian Petruzzi tied the game twice for Dublin, once at 13 on a block of Kamenetskiy, the second time at 16 on a crosscourt kill. It looked like Coffman was going to even the match at a game apiece as they took a 24-22 lead on Adam Young's crosscourt smash. But kills by Kamenetskiy, Baehr and Jordan and Kevin Lookabaugh ended the threat and put Kilbourne up 2-0. More kills by the same quartet, along with Chris Warner, propelled the Wolves to leads of 6-0, 10-3 and 16-4 in the final game. Wolf setter Mitchell Staloch put up some great short sets throughout the match that Baehr smashed for points. Warner and Kamenetskiy also had some great digs to keep balls in play. Staloch made a great back pedaling dig to save a volley early in what became a six point run that put game three out of reach. After the match Coach Glynda Rice praised her team's defense noting how they depend on their outsides to get the digs and come back with the kills. Warner agreed and credited Rice for his team's tenacious defense. "She just gets on us. She makes it second nature for us to go after those balls". Kilbourne hosts Hilliard Darby and Centerville in a tri-match this Saturday. They should have lots of balls to go after.
