by Jim Jicha

Elder knocked off St. Xavier in GCL action last Thursday night 23-25, 28-26, 25-21, 26-24, temporarily tightening the GCL South title race (Last night St. Xavier clinched a tie for first with a win over Moeller, while Elder fell out of the race with a loss to LaSalle).

Jake Neiheisel and Clancy Gay paced Elder’s attack with 15 and 11 kills, respectively, with Matt Harpenau and CJ Zureick combining for 18 more tallies. Neiheisel, Harpenau and Zureick amassed 25 blocks, while Elliott Miller paced the defense with 20 digs and Steven Kent put up 24 assists.

The previous weekend Elder knocked off Hilliard, beating Davidson on Friday and Darby on Saturday.

Roger Bacon stayed unbeaten in the GCL Central with a straight set win over Archbishop Alter on May 5. Alter turned around and toppled GCL North leader Chaminade-Julienne 22-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21, 16-14. Roger Bacon leads McNicholas by one game in the Central, and the two will tangle in a regular season finale on May 15.

Worthington Kilbourne downed Hilliard Davidson 25-22, 25-21, 27-25 this past Thursday to end in a first place tie with Hilliard Darby for the OCC Capital Division. The Wolves, which had recently beaten Darby in four to force the tie, averted an upset on Tuesday when they eased past stubborn Dublin Coffman 25-23, 25-21, 28-26. Darby, meanwhile, kept pace with a 25-15, 25-17, 24-26, 18-25, 15-7 win over Davidson.

On April 25, Davidson rallied to defeat host Brecksville 24-26, 23-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-9 in the final of the Bees Invitational. Outside hitter Brandon Bowers paced the Wildcats with 22 kills on 54 attempts.  Middle blocker Brian Lantz and Jordan Zickafoose added 17 and 11 kills, respectively, while setter Casey Null dished up 47 assists.

Lakota West finished a perfect 8-0 to win the Greater Miami Conference for the first time ever. Their 22-25, 25-21, 24-26, 25-23, 15-13 squeaker over runner-up Cincinnati Sycamore way back on April 2 turned out to be the decider.

On May 2, West won the Beavercreek Quad, sort of, by topping Lakewood St. Edward 31-29, 25-22. Both finished 2-1. St. Edward got past Archbishop McNicholas 26-24, 26-24, which in turn beat West 25-21, 15-25, 25-12, but lost to host Beavercreek.

Pacing West in the Quad were outside Dylan Kembre with 31 kills and setter Dallas Kaiser who put up 66 assists.

Also on May 2, host Sycamore beat Northmont and Archbishop Alter, while host Milford knocked off Kettering Fairmont and Oak Hills. At 12-5, Milford is on track for its best season ever.
