Centerville Elite especially hard to figure this season April 23, 2010 by Jim Jicha The Centerville Elite is on tap for tomorrow and it promises to be a pitched battle. All eight teams are ranked in the top ten, and while that is not unusual, this year has seen more than its share of inconsistent results. Seeding this event had to be especially difficult. Saturday’s field consists of Elder, St. Xavier, Archbishop Moeller, Centerville, Lakota West, Mt. Vernon, Hilliard Davidson and Lakewood St. Edward. This season opened with two major events, the St. Charles Classic and the Mt. Vernon Quad. St. Xavier won the Classic for the second year in a row, topping LaSalle in the semifinal and Elder in the finale. But Elder promptly turned the tables on the Bombers in a GCL match, and LaSalle did the same soon after, dropping St. Xavier into the GCL cellar. The Bombers, however, rebounded last weekend to capture the Wolf Open (beating LaSalle again, along with D-II power St. Charles ). At the Mt. Vernon Quad, meanwhile, Moeller opened with a hard fought four game win over the host Yellow Jackets. But they then dropped matches to Hoban and St. Edward, whom Mt. Vernon beat. The Crusaders haven’t lost since, and they rallied from 0-2 on Tuesday to knock off top ranked and much taller Elder 20-25, 20-25, 27-25, 25-15, 15-10. That put the Crusaders atop the GCL at 2-0. The hottest teams going into the Elite are 9-0 Lakota West and Mt. Vernon. Lakota West recently nipped LaSalle 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, 16-14. Mt. Vernon has won 13 straight, including a 17-25, 25-14, 22-25, 25-20, 15-13 decision over St. Edward. The only other team to beat St. Edward is Division II top ranked Hoban. Tournament host Centerville beat LaSalle in five and lost to St. Xavier in four. Hilliard Davidson, which lost to Mt. Vernon in four, has not yet played any of the GCL schools. An extra incentive to winning the Elite will be that it has foreshadowed the last six state champions. Centerville Elite Seeds:
