Magnificat Fall Showcase 2003 Results

St. Ursula prevails in all-Toledo final at Magnificat

In an all-Toledo final at Saturday’s Magnificat Fall Showcase, St. Ursula beat Sylvania Northview 15-1, 15-8 to claim their fourth straight title. The match featured few sideouts and was over in less than half an hour.

Northview’s had the opening serve, but that was short lived as Sarah Florian pounded a kill down the line on a set from sophomore sister Emily. And when sophomore Allison Florian smashed a cross court kill the Arrows were flying. St. Ursula got blocks from Sarah and Allison, and then Megan Cherry as they rolled to a 7-0 lead.

After a St. Ursula service error, Nikki Pierzchala got the Lady Kats on the scoreboard with a kill. That proved to be short lived too as Cherry spiked a kill and St. Ursula moved up 9-1. Sarah Florian ended a game high string of four sideouts with a kill and followed by serving up six points to end the game.

Points thirteen came on an ace when what looked like a long serve hit a defender trying to get out of the way. Point fourteen came on another ace. Brittany Fox scored the game point with a kill.

The scoring in game two started in a similar fashion with the Florian sisters conducting a clinic. Sarah scored the Arrows’ first point on a kill. After a net call, Sarah got a sideout on another kill. Emily then served up six points, four on aces. Two of the aces were actually four hit calls, but however you score that, the ball never came back over the net.

One returned serve was an overpass that was demolished by Kelsey Hills, and the other eventually wound up as a kill by Allison. The Arrows were up 7-0.

After a kill by Nicole Bennett gave Northview the serve an Arrows’ hit was out and the Kats were on the scoreboard. But as in game one, St. Ursula rolled on to a 12-1 lead.

At this point Northview rallied, closing to 12-7 thanks to some untimely net and out calls on St. Ursula, plus some timely hitting by Pierzchala. St. Ursula went up 13-8 and Sarah Florian scored the final points by blocking Pierzchala, then cratering an overpass.

Northview appeared to be one of St. Ursula’s major challengers for the Northwest Region, having beaten Bowling Green prior to the tournament, and stopping strong Magnificat and Seton teams to get to St. Ursula.

Northview topped Magnificat in a first round match 15-11, 15-11. The Blue Streaks led 10-8 in game two, but were undone by serving errors on their part and service aces by Northview. Setter Erin Baier had two, and Pierzchala added another. Broole Amstutz scored the winning kill for the Lady Kats.

The Kats had their hands full with Seton in game one of the semifinal as the Saints took leads of 8-4, 11-8 and 13-11. Northview had at least four hits go out, and Seton’s Beth Robbins and Adrienne Bleh scored aces. Emily Sullivan and Caitlin Carey had some nice kills for the Saints. However, Northview rallied to lead 14-13, and, after Carey tied it with a kill, they scored the final points on a net call and a block by Pierzchala and Baier .

Game two was a different, as Seton could not score despite several sideouts, and the Kats raced to a 14-1 lead. Northview got at least four points on Seton miscues, and Amstutz and Nicole Bennett added several points on kills. Seton scored their second point on an ace by Lindsey Frank. But after seven sideouts, Pierzchala ended matters with a spike that knocked down a Seton defender.

St. Ursula had an easier time getting to the final, blitzing Norwalk 15-0, 15-1 in the first round, and taking down Austintown Fitch in the semifinal 15-10, 15-8. Norwalk’s one highlight occurred when sophomore Lisa Lee dug a spike that had been cremated by Allison Florian. The surprised Arrows, who were already celebrating the “point”, reacted in time to nail another kill.

Fitch proved to be somewhat troublesome. The Arrows created problems for themselves by hitting several balls out in game one. But Fitch caused problems too as they refused to be flustered by the powerful spikes from the taller Arrows, and gamely kept spikes that were inbounds in play.

The Falcons scored one point when junior Jessica Evans and freshman Caitlin O’Patchen each dug Sarah Florian bombs, and a third blast from another Arrow sailed out of bounds. Even when the end was near, O’Patchen made a great one handed save of a partially blocked St. Ursula smash that was headed way out of bounds.

It should be noted that Fitch played without the services of star hitter Maggie Case who has missed the entire season with shin problems.

Seton took third place in the tournament by beating Fitch 15-7, 15-6. The Falcons led game one 7-6 when the sky fell on them. Seton took a 9-7 lead and, after several sideouts, Lindsey Frank served six straight points for the win. Frank started with an ace, and finished with another ace on the line. Carey had two kills in between.

Game two followed a similar script when, with Seton on top 7-6, the sky again fell on Fitch. Sophomore Emily Sullivan scored match point on a kill that was blocked out of bounds.

Magnificat beat Norwalk 15-0, 15-4 for fifth place. The Blue Streaks were led by the blocking of Mary Kate Glowe, Caraline Sroka and Katie Richardson, who formed what sometimes seemed like an impenetrable wall at the net.

St. Joseph Academy came from way back to beat Holy Name 14-16, 15-11, 15-8 for seventh place. The Jaguars were down 9-0 and 11-3 in game two when they started their rally.

The good news for both of those teams is that they only have four seniors between them. St. Joe’s hitting was led by junior Annie Sibert and sophomore Katie Lehane. Holy Name started two freshmen, setter Megan Kelly and hitter Stephanie Zelasko. And freshman substitute Alyssa Rinehart scored the final two points of game one for the Green Wave.

The Fall Showcase may have given us a preview of the Northwest Regional this year. Magnificat and St. Ursula have become regulars at the regional. And if Northview can stay out of St. Ursula’s district, all three teams might show up.

That’s if they can dodge the likes of Elyria, Amherst, Perrysburg, Findlay, Bowling Green and Anthony Wayne, just to name a few, who are sure to have other ideas.

Toledo St. Ursula is nicknamed the Arrows but opposing teams at last weekend’s Fall Showcase saw mostly rockets from hitting star Sarah Florian. This tournament had a very strong field, but the Arrows simply had too much fire power and won all three matches in two games. Florian hit with such force that some tips exploded off defenders’ fingers and then ricocheted off the back wall. Errant digs by opponents had fans ducking for cover. Florian played great defensively as well, with diving digs and sticking a hand out to prevent opponent’s blocks from dropping. And although she did not jump serve, her serves behaved like jump serves.

Magnificat setter Kailee Goold also had a big day as she repeatedly surprised defenders by dumping sets into holes on their side of the court. On one play she chased an errant pass out of bounds and popped it at an angle over the net into a hole on the far side of the court. It could have been luck, but I suspect she planned it that way. Goold was at her best in reading defenses and calling plays, and Magnificat hitters often found they had an open net. But her biggest play was probably in the semifinal with Fitch when she pancaked a dig that enabled Magnificat to score, after the Falcons had taken an 11-8 lead. That started a rally that put the Blue Streaks into the final.

The Austintown-Fitch Magnificat match lasted for almost two hours. The Blue Streaks won the first game and seemed in control as they took a 13-9 lead in Game Two. But the Falcons roared back to win and then took leads of 10-6 and 11-8 in the third game. After Goold’s pancake, Magnificat took a 14-11 lead and, after a brief rally by Fitch, finally put it away.

At this point it had taken almost five hours to get through three of the six matches to be played in the main gym. However, St. Ursula did not have much trouble with Seton in their semifinal match, and Seton pretty much controlled the tempo of their third place match with Fitch. This helped get the tournament somewhat back on schedule.

The match for fifth place in the other gym was long and tense, especially the third game. Northview led 3-0 in Game Three when the first game of the championship match started in the main gym. Northview’s match point came about five minutes before St. Ursula scored theirs for the title.

Magnificat came out charging in the title match and quickly built an 8-2 lead, as Goold nailed one of fake serves. St. Ursula got a kill on a quick set from sophomore Allison Mugler, and the Arrows closed to 8-6. The Blue Streaks scored twice to make it 10-6. The Arrows closed to 10-8, before Mary Kate Glowe’s kill broke serve. But Florian countered with a blast through the blockers and then served for three points. Glowe got another kill, but the Arrows were not to be denied as sophomore Laura Fender hit an ace serve for game point.

Game Two started with another fake serve by Goold and five sideouts. But St. Ursula, powered by blocks from Brittany Fox, Sara Hotz and Kelsey Hills and another rocket from Florian, quickly built a 10-2 lead. Four points came while Florian was serving. The Blue Streaks rallied on the blocking of Katie Richardson and Mary Kate Glowe and kills by Jackie Matia and Brianne Flynn and Richardson. St. Ursula got a sideout with the score 14-10, and Laura Fender, whose ace won the first game, served for the final point of the match.
