Hubbard defeats Massillon Perry, host Northwest at tri-match October 14, 2006 By Jim Jicha Eleventh ranked Hubbard won Canal Fulton's Tri-Match, first topping Massillon Perry 25-12, 25-19, then defeating their seventh ranked hosts 30-28, 13-25, 25-9. Perry beat Northwest in the day's first match 18-25, 28-26, 25-18. Hubbard coach Chuck Montgomery said his team passed the ball well against Northwest. He cited setter Lauren Ferguson for "doing a good job distributing the ball" and his hitters for successfully running their slides and fakes. At the start it looked like Northwest might prevail as the Indians jumped out to a 8-2 lead behind the hitting and blocking of middles Melissa Siegenthaler and Natalie Ogg, and aces from outside Sam McCourt, defensive specialist Brandi Klein and libero Lizbeth Paredes. Hubbard got three back on kills from their big middles, 6'1" Sophie Paddock and 6' Maggie Bogdan, and junior outside Brittany Lange. Some point trading left Northwest up 11-7. Eagle junior left side Katoria Carter then pounded a cross court kill, Bogdan followed with a block and Carter one-upped that with a booming block. A long Northwest hit knotted the count. Scoring went back and forth to a tie at 15, at which point Eagle junior setter served five straight, helping her own streak with two diving digs of dumps by Indian setter Trisha Budrow. Paddock contributed a kill and a block, and defensive specialist Gabby Flynn turned a knock down spike into a pass. But Northwest battled back with Siegenthaler and freshman Dakota Harkins spiking two kills each to knot it at 21. Seven more ties ensued with Hubbard getting to 22, 23, 24 and 25 first. A kill by Siegenthaler and another Klein ace serve put the Indians up 26-25, as play became very intense. Lange retied it with a cross court blast from left side with the defense following the faking Paddock to the right. Budrow came up with a great dump to end a intense volley on which Ogg and Budrow blocked spike attempts and Hubbard defenders dug the blocks. Hubbard rightside Karen Cover hit a soft tip into a hole to retie. Siegenthaler put Northwest up again with a kill that was dug back over but out. Ferguson retied it again, this time with a two handed dump into a hole. An ace by Lange gave Hubbard the edge, and when Northwest mishandled Lange's next serve the game was over. The remainder of the match was anticlimactic as the teams took turns winning by lopsided margins. Siegenthaler started Northwest off with two kills and the Indians gradually pulled away to a 9-4 margin. Northwest went up 13-6 on a four point run that saw the wildest volley of the day. There were saves by Ferguson, digs by McCourt, blocks and heads up plays, but when Siegenthaler finally hit a cross court smash that was dug way out the play was, for some reason, ruled no point. But no matter, Northwest kept their momentum going to the end. The tiebreaker proved even more one-sided for Hubbard as Lange started a 6 point run to a 7-1 lead with two kills. Eventually, Budd served six straight points to make it 20-9, with Paddock scoring two of her six kills and Carter chipping in with two as well. Paddock got the last two, one a pop over the defense into the right corner, and the finale a blast that was dug out of bounds. Hubbard took quick charge of game one against Massillon Perry by scoring the first six points, with Paddock and Carter leading the charge. Perry closed to 6-4 and 8-6 as setter Katelyn McBurney scored a tip and junior outside Megan Fisher converted on a slide and teamed with Courtney Evans for a block. But Hubbard edged ahead 13-9 and blew the game open on a 6-0 run served by Cover, with Bogdan blocking a dump and spiking a kill and Carter slamming two straight cross court spikes from left side. Bogdan and Budd also made some nice defensive plays. Game two was tight with seven ties and Perry leading at times. Junior outside Rachelle Prince had three kills, and Fisher and senior outside Casey Hinzman had two apiece as the Panthers clawed to a 11-9 edge. But two kills by Paddock, an ace by Lange and a block by Paddock and Cover gave Hubbard a lead they never relinquished. Bogdan made some key blocks, and at least three kills as the Eagles quickly built a six point lead. Hubbard's match winning point came on an errant Panther hit that ended an intense volley on which Lange made two saving digs at the net. Perry won their match with Northwestern by staving off the Indians in game two, then taking advantage of Indian errors in the finale. Northwest had moved ahead 17-16 in game three on a kill and block by junior Alexis Harkins, and a block and kill by Siegenthaler and Ogg, respectively. But the roof fell in when the Indians committed three errors. Panther outside Jackie Randulic then served up two aces, and sophomore Marie Frease scored a kill as Perry rolled to a 23-17 margin. Perry's winning point came on a cross court blast to the right corner by Fisher.
