No. 5 Northwestern downs No. 2 Smithville to grab share of first place in WCAL October 4, 2008 By Jim Jicha Fifth ranked West Salem Northwestern defeated second ranked and unbeaten Smithville on Thursday 25-19, 25-23, 26-24 before a packed house at Northwestern High School. The Huskies thereby avenged an earlier loss to the Smithies, and grabbed a share of the Wayne County Athletic League lead. Both teams are now 19-1. “Overall team effort was the key to our success”, said Northwestern Coach Veronica Briggs, who credited strong serving and eliminating hitting errors as the biggest differences in their two matches with the Smithies. She added “We had 31 hitting errors in our first meeting, to five last night.” Outside/middle hitter Kara Koch and outside Kristen Warner were also key factors as they provided 21 and 13 kills, respectively. Setter Marisa George had 34 assists. Libero Kim Bowman and Warner led the defense with 12 digs apiece, and Koch contributed 10 more. George served three aces, and Koch and Warner totaled three more. The first set was non-eventful with Northwestern winning 25-19, but the next two could have gone either way. The Huskies trailed game two the entire way until taking the lead 24-23 as opposite hitter Damian Greene served out. Northwestern jumped out 16-4 in game three with setter Marisa George serving three aces and five service points, only to sit back and watch Smithville chip away until they tied at 19. Both teams then exchanged sideouts until Koch put away the match winner off a Smithville free ball. Northwestern, Smithville and Orrville will converge in the Smithville Sectional/District, and the winner could advance to the final four, although Independence and undefeated Gilmour Academy will have a big say.
