Perrysburg comes back to win in 5, takes NLL lead

September 20, 2005

By Jim Jicha

Perrysburg took a giant step toward the Northern lakes League crown last Thursday with an exciting 25-23, 14-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-7 road win over arch rival Bowling Green. The teams were tied at 4-0 going into the match, with Bee Gee was coming off a big win over Maumee, a team that had given Yellow Jackets fits.

Bee Gee won the league last year, and while they graduated several starters, the current team is loaded with young talent. With many players returning, Perrysburg was favored to win the league, but the Yellow Jackets suffered a blow, losing 6’3” senior middle Nichole Diller to an injury at the season’s start.

Bee Gee was at home and, as always, had a large and very supportive student section.

And, midway through the fourth game it appeared as if the Bobcats were going to win the match and take sole possession of first place…until 6’0” junior Chelsea Campbell sparked a rally and turned it around for Perrysburg.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 3-0 first game lead with freshman Lindsey Nelson serving an ace and 6’0” sophomore Ashley Horak spiking a kill. Perrysburg tied it on an ace by 6’1” junior Ohio State recruit Melissa Szkutnik, and scoring went back and forth with Perrysburg tying at 8-all on a service error.

Amanda Sundling then served up six points to give the Yellow Jackets a 15-8 margin. Szkutnik scored on a tip and block, and the Bobcats obliged with some errors (one was a block that would have scored had it not landed barely out).

The Bobcats clawed their way back to an 18-19 score. Horak and Jenn Torengo teamed for a block, Nelson served two aces and Perrysburg returned favors with some errant hits. But the Yellow Jackets ran off four more points as 6’3” sophomore middle Nicole Parrish spiked through the BeeGee block, Sara Tonies served two aces and Parrish deftly tipped a Bobcat overpass into a hole.

Bee Gee came back on kills by sophomore Katie Stoots to make it 22-23 and 23-24, before Szkutnik sealed the win with a kill.

Perrysburg was off and running in game two, with freshman middle hitter Lauren Naveaux serving a rally for a 6-3 lead. The Yellow Jackets were still ahead 8-6 when Bee Gee libero Brittany Dunn scored on a dig.

This brought Lauren Rex to the line, and the sophomore defensive specialist served one line drive after another, including three aces, to spark a 12-0 run. Senior outside Hallie Beattie chipped in with three kills, and sophomore Kathy Bibler and junior Crystal Augsburger added one each.

Campbell stopped the onslaught with a kill and ace, but two more aces by Nelson made it 23-11, and soon after Horak pounded a cross court kill for the winner.

The Bobcats scored six straight early in game three with junior setter/hitter standout Kristen Barr notching a block and two kills. That put the home team up 7-3, and Perrysburg never got closer than three. Bee Gee’s final two points were helped by some nice digs from Dunn.

Game four went back and forth with Perrysburg up 3-0 and 9-8, and Bowling Green on top 8-5 in between. The Bobcats forged ahead 12-9 on a spike from back court by Beattie, two more ace serves from Rex and a kill down the down by Beattie.

That’s when Campbell took charge.

The 6’0” Xavier recruit smashed a cross court kill for a sideout, then rotated to back row where she wreaked even more havoc. On the ensuing volley Campbell dug two smashes by Beattie, and made a difficult pass that ended in a cross court kill by Szkutnik. After making another nice dig that was followed by a Bobcat lift, she served up an ace.

Beattie came back with three kills but Bobcat hopes of a run were dashed by two serving errors, and when Szkutnik blocked Beattie the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good at 16-15. Setter Amber Lopez served an ace as their lead grew to 18-15 and 21-17.

Bee Gee narrowed the gap to 20-21 on a cross court kill to the line by Stoots and an ace from Barr, after which Campbell and Bibler exchanged points.

At this point Campbell smoked a Bobcat overpass to put her team up 23-21. Then she caused more trouble from the back row with a short serve, leading to another overpass that Parrish devoured. And while the record will show that Szkutnik’s cross court kill won the game with an assist from Lopez, that play began with a great pass…from Campbell!

Passing pretty much sums up Perrysburg’s turnaround in game four. The Yellow Jackets had committed at least eleven hitting errors in games two and three, but once they got their passing in gear, their hitting became unrelentingly crisp. They even stopped Rex, spiking kills for sideouts on her last two trips to the line.

And so, game five turned out to be anticlimactic. Lopez served Perrysburg to a 3-0 lead, and the Yellow Jackets pulled away to 5-1, 8-3 and 11-4. Szkutnik and Campbell teamed up for seven kills, Szkutnik added a block and an ace and sophomore libero Jordan Hamons kept Bowling Green’s hitters at bay.

Perrysburg also won a very exciting JV match. Trailing 6-14 in the game three tiebreaker, the Yellow Jackets got a sideout, and freshman Cori Boyce served out to lead a spectacular rally.
