Marion Local wins Lehman Tourney, second win over Lehman in a week....
Sidney Lehman's tournament is held the first week of the season. Since it is one of the best small school tournaments in the state, it often provides a good preview of the State Championship. Last year Hopewell-Loudon won at Lehman and at the Nutter Center. Two years ago Lehman nipped Hopewell 16-14 in Game three for the title in their tourney. That was the only match either team would lose as they won State in Divisions III and IV, respectively. This past weekend Marion Local toppled Lehman in the title match 15-7, 15-13 as the ball for match point dropped on Lehman's side of the court after a play at the net. Both teams are strong enough to go all the way, and other teams in the tournament could go far. It looked as if the title match might go three games, when Lehman rallied from a 5-1 deficit in Game 2 to take a 13-8 lead. However, after five service breaks the Flyers from Marion staged a furious rally for the win. Marion's victory was led by setter Diane Bruns who used quick sets and back sets very effectively to mix up the offense. 6'1" Margo Moeller had some big kills off Bruns' quick sets. 6'0" Ashley Langenkamp also scored on smashing kills, and she and Moeller had some booming blocks. Team Co-Captain Marianne Wuebker scored key points on hits through Lehman's blockers. Marion was also helped by the passing and defensive plays of 5'10" Erin Puthoff, who often found herself the target of Sidney Lehman's ace spiker Ashley Newcomer. Lehman's hitting was led by Newcomer, Amy Edwards and Emily Hodges, and was fueled by the setting of Adrienne Payawal, who is also a superb digger when necessary. Lehman now has lost twice to Marion. Plus they have a killer schedule with the likes of Vandalia-Butler, St. Henry and Kettering Alter, and they are in Piqua's tournament. So don't write them off if they go into the state tournament with a few losses. They are good enough to go all the way. Other teams in Lehman's tournament could go far in the State Tournament, especially when you consider that Hopewell-Loudon finished sixth and West Jefferson seventh. West Jeff made the district final last year with no seniors. At Lehman they were led by setter Jenna Markham, and hitters Heidi Hayes and Kim Barton. They will be a strong contender in Central District. Hopewell has a very young team, starting two freshman and two sophomores. The Chieftans suffered the loss of several seniors from last year's team, plus a promising sophomore setter opted for cross country this fall. To make matters worse two players were injured Thursday night. With freshman setter McKenzie Brickner, and hitters Amanda Hohman (soph) and Andrea Engleman (frosh), they can only get better. Anna looked very impressive in taking the match for fifth place from Hopewell. Their attack was led by 5'10" junior Emily Elsass and 5'9" sophomore Stephanie Lehmkuhle. Versailles topped Fisher Catholic for third place in a match that lasted close to an hour and a half. The teams split the first two games 15-13. Versailles won the third game 15-8. However, the game was a long struggle with lots of service breaks until Versailles pulled away from an 8-8 tie. While that game was played, Lehman and Marion had their warmups and played their first game in the championship match. Versailles' volleyball program has become much stronger since the Lady Tigers joined Marion and St. Henry in the MAC. They have two very capable setter/hitters, 6'0" senior Liz McClurg and 5'11" junior Cheri Stamman. Junior hitters Staci Condon and Kara Hemmelgarn provide offensive depth. In their first semi-final game with Marion, they battled the Flyers on even terms. Fisher Catholic was led by setter/hitter junior Jackie Helm, and the hitting of senior Sara Robb and sophomore Audra Vucic. Based on yesterday's performance, Fisher should contend with Heath and Granville for their league's title. They could also be a factor in the Central District, where Centerburg is the favorite.
